How to do a rolling harrier?
Well, I feel a little silly asking this question, but I've tried what I think a rolling harrier is and it looks like a aileron roll gone bad. To make matters worse, the plane comes to the ground REALLY quick.
So, someone or several, give me some pointers on what to do to learn this maneuver. Thanks, Andy |

the first step is to learn the inverted harrier, i see a lot of pilots fooling around with rolling fly by's but the harrier is more attitude than flying. when your confident with the inverted rudder inputs practice rolling from up right to inverted high a attitude and back again. while in the knife edge portion of the roll watch the pitch of the plane while the rudder is deflected. too much rudder will cause you to over control, you will always be fighting the elevator to correct what the rudder input has caused. dont practice only left or right rolls, do it both directions as this will make you a better pilot. rudder rudder rudder gotta have rudder. i also use to do a fast 16 point kind of rolls to learn the rudder inputs from all those different angles as. The same rudder that holds the planes in that particular knife edge looks keeps the plane flying in the rolling harrier. Again you are getting to practice the rudder and elevator imputs. That is one pretty move.......Big Alierons do help

imho a harrier rolling circle is easier to do than just a rolling harrier well atleast with my planes i also found it easier to get a cheap funfly and just bite the bullet and do it low and try to slow the plane down and also try practicing on realflight

How to do a rolling harrier?
If you want to learn how to do rolling harriers that is easy, I call it the 3P method, practice practice practice. Ok, lets get serious, it is a function of keeping your fingers to the speed of the plane, which is controlled by surface deflections and throttle. I would start by doing rolls and never stopping, you should be able to do rolling circles, roling figure 8's etc. If not get that down, then do them slower, slower and then slower maintaining altitiude and then you will start to see how fast your fingers need to move, and that it requires alot of deflection. Start with a straight line and then go to circles and then do figure 8's with them, it will come just use the 3P method. Jeff Williams

I'm still learning this one, however it seems to me (at least with my plane) that its too easy to over control with elevator than rudder (i can do it on G2 for hours). Try to smooth out the roll...as when i started they looked like a series of flick rolls!! The best method i've found is use a slow-moderate roll rate and 'fly' the controls rather than 'stick banging'! which i know alot of 3D flyers do. Looks good when you can do it though! ;) |
rolling harrier
I have got to the point that I can use the rudder and elevator in a rolling harrier, and do ok with it. Still can't make the plane go right where I want it to go though. In other words, I can't make a pass down the center of the strip, or do nice figure 8's etc...
The main problem that I have had is getting the ailerons to roll the plane when in a really high alpha rolling harrier. They just aren't effective enough even at 50 degree travels. Are any of you having this same problem? Bill |

Yup, Having the same problem...i put it down too not having any ailerons directly behind the prop therefore the prop wash is missing it completly and your below the stall so theirs very little air passing over it... i would like to do another wing with bigger ailerons to see if it can solved or if it creates problems putting the ailerons in the prop wash.
