AW Edge Harrier Problems
Aeroworks 33% 540T with DA 100. I can't get a very high angle of attack when doing a harrier. Is this a CG issue? I have about 40 degrees of elevator and the CG is about 3/4" in front of the tube. It stays really flat and looks pathetic! What am I doing wrong?

Setup
Dan,
When I have my AW Edge setup for sequence flying (forward CG)I tend to notice the same thing. Jason Danhakl gave me a rule that I have always used when setting up CG for 3D. Roll the plane inverted...should have to add very small amount of down elevator to stay horizontal. The AW seems to perform the harrier very well at that neutral CG location. Not as pretty, but bursts of throttle will allow you to push the tail down, and achieve a very high angle of attack at almost any CG. |

I would try moving the CG back...

Where is the sweet spot for the CG to be on this plane?

AW Edge Harrier Problems
Move the CG back and also see if you can get a little more elevator throw (45-50 degrees).
While I don't know where the "sweet spot" is yet (I'm still dialing mine in) I have heard from other guys that go as much a 1 1/2 inches BEHIND the wing tube! (Found that one surprising the first time I heard it as well) I wouldn't jump to that point but slowly try moving the CG back. I was talking to Rocco at the TOC and he suggested to just add weight to the tail about an ounce at a time until when coming in for a landing slight elevator movements make the plane balloon. Personally I think Tim's advise is the way to go and set the CG based on inverted flight. Nothing more unnerving than having to hold up elevator to sustain inverted flight. Let us know how you make out..............Mark |
