Fellow Flyers,
Does anyone have suggestions for removing the weak LG off the Spectrum 40 and relocating it to the fuse just ahead of the wing LE? I'm curious about how the area is to be reinforced, and if there are any suggestions concerning patching the tunnel cowl after I cut it to gain access.
I appreciate any help.

Had a spectrum about a year ago. As I recall the weakness in the LG are not the blocks in the wing, but the lite ply plate that is used to simulate a retract mount with the included fixed gear. My fix was to just put real retracts in. Many hard landings and I never ripped them out. If you don't want retracts, just lock them down and run as fixed gear. At $20 for the hobbico's, it is probably as cheap as converting the fuse to fixed. Not exactly what you were asking, but it might work. HTH, Chuck

I found a different solution, but I did experience the exact same thing with the lite ply plates delaminating. What I ended up doing was putting 4 screws in each plate from the bottom into the hardwood gear block. I used some old sheet metal screws I had lying around, they were about the size of a 2-56 screw, a half inch long. I pre-drilled with a 1/16th inch drill bit, and put in the 4 screws on each side. We have a grass field here, and it's under development, so it's still pretty rough. I didn't have any more landing gear problems, and I didn't have to worry about messing with retracts.

Okay, why not just make new plates out of aircraft ply? Sounds like a simple enough solution to me.

Simple, aircraft ply will still delaminate! The screws hold it together, and work great.
