RE: Hangar-9 Extra 260 and DA-50
centrino--3 inch standoffs from DA if using DA 50-reinforce motor box-put ignition on side of motor box-put ignition battery inside motor box-fuel tank under wing tube- make ply plate for fuel tank to sit on-I put throttle servo back where rudder servo would go if you used pull-pull for rudder--remove cover from rudder and strengthen it to keep from breaking at counterbalance area---make darn sure to replace the stock carbon gear-one good bounce and they are toast and will probably crack some of the underlying wood structure that you wont see until later---I used Hitec 5645 I think on everything except rudder where I used JR 8611--22 oz fuel tank-more than you need but then you dont have to fill it completely up--1.25 SWB servo arms--1700 mah 4.8 volt NMH for ignition---2700 mah MNH 6 volt for reciever--3.25 TRU TURN spinner---balances just aft or recommended point---flies very well at this cg--I am running 22-8 PRO-Zinger for a couple more gallons and the will try 23-8 Mejlik----REMEMBER ONE THING--if you want problems use the stock landing gear--mine delamed after 3 flights-replaced them with GRAPHTEC carbons and they delamed after abt 5 landings ( one semi bounced landing )--am going to try some aluminum gear and see if they will have enough give to stay in one piece--the carbons are just too stiff--somethings got to give-----hope this helps

RE: Hangar-9 Extra 260 and DA-50
Phoneman, are you telling me that the Graphtec landing delamied also? I just bought Graphtec landing gear for my unassembled 260 27%. What's up with this product? Thanks, John

RE: Hangar-9 Extra 260 and DA-50
quietstorm366--yes the graphtec gear delamed on the right side--they only lasted 8 or 9 flights--our landing field is not the smoothest having fire ant beds scattered around and I tend to bounce in on occasion--I think the carbon gear are just too stiff--they dont have any give so something has to absorb the stree if you make something other than a perfect 3 pt landing---I also had a set on a Funtana 90 that delamed also--Mike at graphtec said he was using a different weave when I called him abt the set on the Funtana--have not had any more problems with those--maybe the ones for the 260 were a different weave or something--no more carbons on this plane for me--went ahead and ordered a set of alum gear--hopefully no more gear problems

RE: Hangar-9 Extra 260 and DA-50
I have hundreds of landings on my Graph Tech gear with no problems. I do not slam it on the ground because it lands like a trainer. 13.5 lbs.

RE: Hangar-9 Extra 260 and DA-50
Maybe I got a bad set-- twice--I dont slam my planes on the ground either but I still have had 2 sets to delam--not including the stock set from H9--I can see where a really rough landing might cause some problems but the occasional bounce should not cause the gear to come apart

RE: Hangar-9 Extra 260 and DA-50
Well it is time to eat crow. After I shot my mouth off in here about the GT gear and how durable it is I found mine slightly delaminated on right side last night. Guess I will have to order another one because it looks cool and did last quite a while.

FBaity--hopefully it will taste better than the last time I had to eat it-lol--I'm not knocking the Graphtec gear--I have a set on my Fun 90 and the second set is holding up fine--I'm just a little aggravated with this plane--it flies great but I've had nothing but trouble with the landing gear--btw--it was one of your posts abt the rudder being weak in the counterbalance area that made me decide to strenghthen it up before attaching it to the fuse--that and one of my buddies who came over-looked at it-said " Hey-this rudder looks real weak right here "--next thing I know he had cut all the covering off---thanks for post

Phoneman,
I am interested...are you talking GT or metal? Frank |
RE: Hangar-9 Extra 260 and DA-50
I just wonder what the heck is going on with all this carbon fiber stuff. Helicopter main frames have been made from it for many years, and you never heard of this delaminating/cracking problem- until a crash, of course.
I went straight to the TNT aluminum gear after my kit-supplied c/f gear CRACKED on the fifth (gentle) landing. Yes, it is heavy, compared to the c/f stuff. But that is the only air frame-related problem I've had with this plane, and I don't worry about that anymore. I finally gave up on that OS 1.60; after over two months and $100 in pumps/regulators, trying to get the SOB to do right, I'm putting a BME 50 in my Extra. But you know what? I'll wager large that when I put that 1.60 back on the test stand, with "normal" plumbing, it will run just fine- like it did when I broke it in. I'm really looking forward to being able to FLY this model without worry. I actually have over 30 flights on it; but each one of those was an adventure, wondering what the powerplant was going to do next...[&o] |

FBaity--carbons from graphtec

RE: Hangar-9 Extra 260 and DA-50
Steve,
I agree with you on the CF stuff. I have a XL-Pro2K that I bought in late 99 and the frames are like nib. The delamination problems we see are in the bends of the gear....of course XL frames are all flat pieces. However for the money I spent on the GT gear it shouldn't have delaminated as I have never hard landed this aircraft. I must say I really like the 260 and with a YS 160DZ it is a joy to fly. Frank |
