Wild hare 202??

Do any of you have this plane? I am looking to buy my first big gas plane and this one looks very nice. I am flying a ace stardacher 300 .60 right now. I have never flown anything bigger than a .60 plane. Am I ready for a large plane like this? I want something of high quality that will last a long time...Im sick of this cheep crape that falls apart! What servos are recomended for a 35% plane. They say it can hold 1 or 2 servos for each aileron. What setup would be better? What would be a good engine choice...I'm 16 on a budget so I can't go to big. What plane in the 30-40% range would you recomend? Nothing more than 2,000 RTF ....This will be most of my christmas and birthday so i won't be paying for it :) :D

Thanks

Chad

huh?

$2000 for combo of b-day and xmas?

I'm available to be adopted... :)

(As an answer to your question, I recommend that you try a quarter scale first....Goldberg Extra 300....DP Extra 330, H9 Edge....Something like that...)

I agree with a 1/4 scale something first. You might end up spending $2000 just for the radio and engine if you are not careful.

OK I will go with a 1/4 scale ... I have heard good and bad about the hanger 9 edge??? Any advice on a 1/4 scale...I really want to go with a gas engine because between my helis and planes im spending $40 bucks a week on fuel.

Thanks

Chad

DP Extra

I have the H9 edge, and the DP Extra 330L....My Extra has the BME 50 on it....

3dbatixkid here on RCU uses a Moki 2.1 on his....If you do the Moki, the fuel expense will *not* go down....

Your mileage may vary... :)

Yes and No, If he's flying helis, then he's used to buying 20% plus nitro fuel and paying the price. Moki's run fine on $8 a gallon FAI. And the Moki 1.8 is a potent combo with several of the current 1/4 scale birds.

Another note of interest. One of my heli flying buddies flies a very hot Freya with the YS80 on it. It actually burns just as much fuel (in ounces) for a 10-12 minute flight as my Moki 1.8 does! Except, it's burning 20/20.

edge_fanatic 12-04-2002 04:05 PM

WOW

I'd LOVE to get FAI fuel for $8/gal.....but, everything....(EVERYTHING!) seems to cost more here on the "other" coast.....

I had heard that the Moki 2.1 drink lots of fuel, but I may have heard wrong... My son will know for sure in a week or so about the 1.8...He's due to receive a 1.8 in the mail that he wants to put on his SIG CAP231EX.

Oh well....

Edge_Fanatic, where are you located in the Bay Area. I know a guy and I can give you his phone number who sells Powermasters cheap. He lives in Redwood City.

5% = $10.00
10% = $11.50
15% = $12.50
20/20 = $15.00

Not sure about FAI. It should be cheaper than the 5%. I buy a case of 5% a month for my Moki for $60 (no tax).

Don't get an H9 Edge .... i'm a simialr age to you, a few years younger as it happens, and I don't like wasting money... in my opinion the H9 Edge is just about good to get to grips with how to perform the 3D, but it won't do anything better than that.. it is unstable... i don't have a problem with my airframe like many people did, the quality is poorer than i'd have expected, but fair enough it does the job.

Take a DP Extra... it's worth every penny.

I own a GP Giles 202 with Saito 180, digital servos, JR 10X etc.
The Real Flight Giles files EXACTLY like the real one and visaversa.
This is one of the most frustrating airplanes I have ever owned!
It will snap at the drop of a hat while on final if you dont land with some power on and slightly hot. Dont even think of aborting and going around when close to flair.
Also, this plane on high rates wants to corkscrew out of any manuver you try to do with it. On low rates and doing anything with the elevator the plane will want to roll out. It is balanced, it is straight, and looks good, but I would never have another one.
If you want a taste, then find a friend with Realflight and addons 3 and give it a fly.

EVIL, WICKED, MEAN, BAD, and NASTY tip stalling hateful plane to land.

This is my opinion, and you know what Clint Eastwood aka Dirty Harry says about opinions....

Trying moving the CG forward a bunch from were you are as an experiment. Have flown LuvBipes Giles several times and moving the CG has made it a much better airplane. Hoping to have mine ready to go soon.

Fuel for 8 bucks  I fly cp 30% through my freya at $24 buck a gallon and byron 15% in my planes at $17 a gallon. That all they carry at my LHS. :(

Thats what I have heard about those planes.... I want something that is goooood quality and will last a long time. I took a look at the DP extra 330...It looks nice...They don't recomend gas engines though. I am still considering it! I also checked out the Aero works 25% edge....It price is higher but does that reflect the quality? I like both of these models... Any impute is apriciated.

Thanks

Chad

You may want to consider the new GP Patty Wagstaff extra with a gas engine. There is a great thread on this plane. I just bought one, and the quality looks great.

Chad,

Take a look a www.rcaerosport.com . There is a review of the DPM Extra 330L there by Bill Pryor and he put a gas engine in it.

The GP G-202 is a fine flying a/c. Once i got the CG where it was supposed to be, it was smooth, predictable, easy flyer. I ran 8231's all around, and used both a Saito 1.80 and a YS 140FZ in it. 18x6W APC and 17x8 APC. I had over 70 flights on it and ended up really liking the plane.

Any of the larger planes like to have some power for landing, different than a .40 or .60 fun fly. If you reject the landing low and slow (close to stall) and have the big torque of a saito or ys, and you shove in ALL of the power, you will get a powerful wingrock. so if you approach is that bad, go around and try it again. i know, i almost flew into 5 of my buddies behind the flight line when i tried to go around after a lousy approach, with a slight cross wind landing and jammed in the power and watched the wings rock 60 degrees left and right. recovered, and all went well.

i spent the next two flights just doing low approaches to landings, till i felt comfortable.

now i do that with all my airplanes when i start to fly them for the first time, and start up high. better to figure out what the low speed characteristics are when you have altitude margin and plenty of fuel than when you need to land it.

Big planes, just like a full size plane, like to have some power on for a landing. Nothing wrong with the G-202. When the price dropped last year to 199, it was an awesome deal. i too like the patty wagstaff extra. i have a dp 330L with a ZDZ 50 in it, flew it with a ZDZ 40 and it was nice.

but go to a 1/4 scale plane first, that way you can get used to how a larger plane lands and in general flys differently (better IMHO) from smaller planes and if you dork it, you won't cry as much as you would with 2000 bucks tied up in one plane.

cheers

How about this? 26% Extra 260, which is one of the best Extras to model. http://www.geocities.com/pbgcomposites/2m_Extra_260.htm
Its fiberglass, and looks to be alot lighter than the H9 Edge.
Robert.

Thanks for all the info! I checked out the review on on the DP extra and looked at the thread on the GP extra. They both look great! I think I will be choosing betwenn these 2 planes real soon.

Thanks

Frazer Briggs' airplanes are very neat but the front end of them (cowl intakes) are just ugly as sin in my opinion. The same thing with Chip Hyde's old Ultimate. But that shouldn't be a judge of the airplanes themselves however.
