Mixing in Ailerons with elevator
 

Hey gang,
I want to try to stabilize my Giles in elevators and harriers. I have tried multiple trimming options with little success in eliminating the rocking. I hear that some aileron mixed into the elevator may help. My question is which way and how much?

Hi Rick, Depending on the radio, this is usually called flaperon HOWEVER, you need to reverse the direction the ailerons are going (this is done in the set-up in the radio). In other words, when you pull UP elevator BOTH ailerons go UP due to the fact that they are mixed to the elevator. (This is know as "spoileron" or "reflex" by the way). What I do is assign this mix to a switch because you definately do not want this active all the time. Also, when you push down elevator, the ailerons also should come down so you could do inverted harriers and elevators. As for how much, that depends on the plane and how much throw you can get. Keep in mind that when the ailerons are up in the spoileron position, they still have to move enough to function as ailerons as well. Practice with 20 degrees at a high altitude and see how it works.

One thing to keep in mind is that during an IMAC competition, you cannot use this mix unless the full scale aircraft is/was capable of the mix which to the best of my knowledge, no aerobatic plane has ever had this ability.
