Digital Servos and Standard RX

I am looking to buy me some digital servos. Can I use digital servos w/ a regular non PCM JR receiver? I have heard somewhere that you should only use digital servos w/ a PCM reciever. Is this true.

Most of the time I fly by myself, or with a few friends at the field. I hardly ever fly on weeksends when there is a crowd. So i don't think I need to go up to a $200, receiver. And I fly smaller stuff. The biggest plane I have is a 65" wingspan. and I am thinking of putting digitals on the tail for better centering on the elevator servos, and rudder servo.

I am asking this question in this forum, because I know alot of you giant scale 3d pilots are using digitals.

Suggestions and comments welcome.

I have been flying JR 8411's with a standard Futaba FM reciever for some time now with no problems.I did get a PCM reciever for my 35% Edge only because Futaba has the 8ch PCM for $100.00.Otherwise it would have been FM also.

I am using 8411 Digitals on a NER-549 PPM RX. No problems.

I fly with both types of futaba recievers, seems to work fine with either type of servo.

The servo has no idea what kind of reciever is sending it a signal. Its more important to be sure you have enough battery to drive them.:)

Outcast,
that is what I was thinking. but there is a guy at my field that crashed plane. He send in the standard JR 7channel RX. and all the servos, switches etc.

He was running 1 JR DS8411 on rudder. and maybe some on the elevators.

And he said JR told him to only use a PCM reciever with digital servos.

If you want improved centering on your servos for your sport model....then there are plenty of high performance servos around that aren't digital. You should use servos with a higher torque rating ( both 'holding' and 'action' ), and use ones that are ball-raced. Speed of rotation is up to you...

So do you need to go DIGITAL ??

He must have talked to someone over there that was having a bad day.

Do a post in the JR support forum and ask Danny.
He'll set you straight.

He must have misunderstood, I have been using JR and Hitec digital servos for years and do not use pcm. There is no way the servo signal wire could know what radio wavform or frequency was recieved, its at the wrong end of the path, or at least I was sure of that before this thread started :D

Here is what Danny said in the JR radio forum.

You can run digital servos without any problems on FM. The 549 FM receiver has had some problems with several digital servos plugged into it, the servos would jitter due to feedback from the servos. But we have a patch for this that the service center can do. With the R600, you should be fine with digital servos.
