Servos for 3D
 

Hello!

I'm want to change all the servos in my Weston Cougar 2000 (pictured under the name). I had futaba 3001s all round but want to save weight and get a bit more speed. I want to use 6v too. Over here futaba market a mini servo called the SD250 which sounds great but I went to the futaba web site and its not listed. Comparing all the specs (imp vs metric!) doesn't make it obvious either.

So what would you guys suggest? I want my cake and eat it too. ;)

The Hitec 225BBs and 225MGs sound right for you. They're only like $23 (at ServoCity.com, will they ship to the UK?) and they've got plenty of power and speed. They'll also run at 6v and give you more of everything!

Thanks for the quick responses. I reckon that for the money the Hitec 225's can't be beaten. They're fast, and torquey and cheap too. I've traditionally always had Futaba but I guess I'll look around more now.

Just one question: Metal or Nylon? I've heard metal wear faster but nylon can get stripped easier?

I'm using Hitec 5245's on my Freestyle Freestyle (see sigmasignwriting.com if your unfamiliar with the plane - there is a video at bumpygreen.co.uk). They are about £37 each. Not the cheapest but they offer 50 more torque than a 3001, they're fater and are 20 grams lighter.

How do you like the freestyle? I was thinking of one, but it was too expensive, so I am going with a Widebody 40 instead.

The Freestyle is amazing. I have a YS63 in mine. I haven't weighed it. The performance is just awesome.
The kit is a little expensive for what you get but that becomes insignificant when you fly it.

That is a gorgeous looking model! It looks like it would be fantastic with a Y63! But I agree with robert, 250 quid is alotta cash. I reckon you get the best of both worlds, F3A looks and 3d capable. Have to admit its out of my budget at the moment. I take what you're saying about the 5245's, they look great and for your freestyle a good choice. But the Cougar is only a cheapy model, so I don't want to go overboard on servos. I think I'll go with non-digital (like the 225's) and save the money for something grand in the summer!

Hercmate... If you go ahead let me know the differences please.

Personally, I would only use 3004s on 6v .... and i wouldnt try to do anything to save weight. I ended up putting wegiht into my limbo dancer to improve the way it flew.... when it weiged 4lbs it s a far better all round model, far steadier in the hover which surprised me, and the leo 37 had waaayyy loads of power fot it.

I agree with faster servos, but again, standards on 6v are cool.... i have never needed anything more than 4.8v in a funfly model, not to hover, or to throw around.

I'm not trying to put you off, i'm merely using your experience to back up my knowledge, as i have no proof that adding weight is necessary otherwise, it certainly worked in my case though!

I must admit I've never heard of adding weight to a model to make it better! But the wind in the UK is mostly quite strong so I see where you're coming from. I've still not made my mind up on exactly which servos I'll use yet, but I think I will go for mini's just to see. At the end of the day, the cougar's my experimenting model - its cheap and if it breaks I'll get another. I've just reinforced the fuz from the firewall to behind the wing with carbon fibre cloth and put a carbon UC on too. I'm glad you say the Leo 37 is powerful - I've just bought one from JE. I was gonna go with the West 36 but couldn't be doing with the wait and the price.

Whatever happens with the servos and all the mods, I'll let you know. Obviously I'll need a good day for flying it, and I'm out the country for most of Jan so it won't happen for a bit, but I'm slowly getting it ready in the little snippetts of time I get. I'll keep you posted.

MG's for sure. I had both, and stripped everyone of the Nylon Gears !
