Wait a sec.... He has no flying experience at all... but is planning on flying a u-can-do (With sato 100 mind you)? He will have a plane that will be the winner of the contest between you two... until that plane leaves the ground. Then you will be the winner as he will no longer have a plane... That is assuming he is able to keep the plane straight enough during the takeoff roll so it doesnt ground loop and get minor damage preventing further stupid attempts. In my eyes... You win :)

If you can take off and land, I would say you are already the winner. Babies must crawl before they walk, much less run, and they definately won't win any races.

he has never flown at all well maybe on a similator a little bit but he said that the its gonna be set up like a trainer and i have been flying for about a year and can do just about all basic areobatics with ease.

Video his first flight, I havent had a good laugh in a while.:D
|
Hey, it could happen
If he has sim experience and the plane is as "set up like a trainer" as possible, I see no reason why he couldn't be successful, although I wouldn't recommend it. I started out on a fun-fly with no sim experience. Just made sure I was high and slow with low rates, and fore CG.

Just don't buzz too close to his head with your Javelin while your friend is picking up what's left of his U-Can't-Do-3D-Till-You-Learn-To-Fly-In-The-First-Place.

Best Plane?
Is this for real.........?????? Sounds a little strange.

Too scary for words
I hope this is not a real senario. If it is this is more than a little scary. In my own club we had a new member who had a little time on a glider. He decided on his own to try a P-47 as a second plane. A letter from the Field Marshall explaining the rules (which he agreed to adhere to when joining) did get his attention. This letter was sent only after several members asked that he not try to fly it alone. His excuse was he didn't have a lot of money invested. Wonder how far that explination would go if it happened to hit someone before destroying itself.
Get your friend some help. It might take more than a flight instructor. EXCAP232 |

ok, nobody explained why ucd3d set up as a trainer still isn't a trainer...
a trainer has some degree of self righting ability, and usually isn't too happy inverted anyway. a 3d plane does not do this, and will happily bury itself into the ground at any angle it pleases. (All this is assuming it has very small control movements, like a trainer, otherwise that plane is going to go in REALLY quick!!) |

this is for real i tried to tell him its not gonna be like a trainer but he just wants to out do me so all i can say is i warned him.

Show him this thread, so he can see for himself the comments on the plan.
REALLY, I bet it would be possible (Since he has simulator experience) to fly the plane succesfully with tame throws on it ONLY if he were to hook up with an experienced modeler via buddy box and learn to fly. If he try's it on his own... he will crash. He has 4 strikes against him once he punches the throttle on the runway... 1... its a tail dragger and an inexperienced flyier will groundloop the plane before it even gets off the ground. 2... The plane is NOT a trainer, and will go exactly where you put it... with no tendency to right itself. 3... He has got to land the plane, and again... since its a tail dragger... prevent a groundloop. 4... Its not a simulator... so crashes are real :) I see success if he seeks out assistance... but otherwise... no freakin way. |

This guy is a joke! I dont care if he crashes... No amount of sim practice IMO will prepare him for this plane he's got, no matter how its set up!
I would be ribbin' the heck out of this guy while you have the chance before he flies, because I guarantee his plane will be splinters in under 1 minute of his first flight! He wont even know how to operate the Saito! Be sure he doesnt use straight gasoline! This guy is a nut! :o |

Man, this thread brings back memories. I remember my first flight. I had never flown before and had no sim experience. But I knew I was a natural stick and rudder man. I purchased a 200mph ducted fan as my first model. You should have seen my takeoff. Right as the wheels left the ground, I retracted my landing gear and went to inverted immediately. I was two inches off the deck and held it there for 100 yards. Chip Hyde would have envied me. Then I went vertical. My friend's pickup truck was parked near the pits with the windows down. I screamed out of a split ess at over 200mph and flew right thru the cab of his pickup. You should have seen it. The CD that was hanging from his mirror was twirling in my turbulence. Quique would have envied me. I guess I'll go to the TOC this year and win that. It'll be boring since I won't have any competition. Gee, I'm getting bored with this hobby. I guess I'll call NASA and tell them I'll go ahead and fly the space shuttle during the next mission. They have been begging me to fly it.
Whooaaa! Hey, what's going on! <Yawn> Man, I must have been dreaming. :D :D :D Hope you enjoyed the humor!!! |

I'll say it can be done, but he will need a good instructor and may have to spend more time on the buddy box than he is expecting. With the right attitude and right instructor, the UCD3D can probably be used as a first plane (definitely a second plane). I have flown one that was a real kick on high rates, but coming in on low rates was a real no brainer. It settles in nice and slow (slower than some trainers out there), and the lack of self-righting tendancies should be made up for with its size and visibility. I learned to fly with a Sig Mid Star (after the trainer didn't turn out too well) and probably spent a little more time with an instructor than trying it with a Kadet. In this case who knows what the attitude of this guy is, but if you go into it objectively (and tame control throws), I'd say it can be done successfully. Of course, if he just goes for it, the results should be entertaining.

snaught, what is wrong with tail draggers?
I learned to fly with one, infact I've never flown a trike, Ive never had any crashes on landing or takeoff. Well There was one that involved a tree...... but that had nothing to do with the landing gear, just a small field, brain fade and dumb thumbs. Hehe. Yes this guy is not going to succed without alot of help and possibly luck too. I gave my dad (who is currently leaning on a trainer) a few circuits on my sirex wasp. The plane was set with a forward C.G and low throws, but he still had alot of trouble. The power of the plane, and lack of self righting properties had him in trouble and heading for the ground more than once.... (And he can control the trainer quite well) What Idiot sold this guy the gear? Got rocks in the head, or doesn't give a f@#k about the customer. |

Hi,
Just to be a little contraversial (sp?), he won't (or shouldnt) be taking off or landing the model...at least for a couple of weeks. The first model i ever had a go with was a 88" sports plane with a ZG38 in, it was buddy boxed and was never a problem! When i learnt to fly it was on a Wot 4 (Uk produced sports model) which is capable of every trick in the book....on high rates!...we just turned the rates down till i could control it....once i was happy and had gone solo (3 months from starting out) i had a very capable sports machine to have fun with!...oh and i sold it on in flyable condition too! The biggest factor is that I had an exceptional instructor to teach me to fly. Happy Flying |

Hey all ,, this is gotta be a joke!, first of all why are they here in the 3D forum,, when theres one for beginners?? i think someones pullin our chains!
i been flying for 30 yrs both full scale and RC,, and been instructing RC for 20 yrs,, some beginners do well,, but theres always the times in the first few dozen flights wen we must take over frequently,,, a biginner always gets disoriented sometime, i dont care if simulater time is a million flights,, it is not the same, thats like me telling you i have no full scale training but have a thousand hours on a simulater,, now i want to go fly cuz i know i can do it,,, would you and your family want to ride along??? doubt it. we all know he wont pull it off, its just a matter of how many seconds it will last!! he may be fine till he has to make that first turn towards him,, screws up and overcontrols,,, splat!!! VT the flight,, we will see it on the new crashes 6 CD!! stop trying to be macho man,, get some help !! theres enough UCD's on back order,, please dont add more to the list!!! |
