Kyosho? I thought I would give this plane a try. well, I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived. very well built and very lite. it's built like most of the newer arf's that are built lite. I wanted to post some pic's because they don't give you much on their web site. I'm doing this one up electric.
wingspan 55" .50 size model sells for $190 |

RE: KYOSHO edge 540
That looks great!
I asked about this very plane a while back and got little to no response. Is it supposed to be 3D capable? Keep us posted I want to hear a flight report! How much was it out the door? Two piece wing? I've got a YS 63 for it. What's the bottom look like? |
RE: KYOSHO edge 540
Interesting how orange got so popular lately. This must be the 5th plane that has lots of orange on it.Not a much talked about ARF [8D]

RE: KYOSHO edge 540
You mentioned kyosho as if it was some generic brand. Kyosho models has always been very well built and good in quality but tended to be on the pricey side on some models. You got a good plane there! And by the pics the color scheme really looks good. They did a nice clean job on the build too.
Let us know how it flies! |
RE: KYOSHO edge 540
WOW[8D]This is the first I've seen of the Edge. I have the Cap 232 and the Pitts S-2C. They are very well built but heavy, of course they were designed before the big 3D movement. I'd say you have a big winner;) I can't wait to see and hear more on this thread.

RE: KYOSHO edge 540
flooredcobra. sorry for knock'n kyosho. I've only been flying for a few years and I'm really interested in scale 3d planes.
since I've been flying they have not had anything that has interested me. camms69. yes, it should be a good 3d plane. I will definitely keep you posted with my build and flight reports. my motor, esc, battery and other goodies should be here soon. it does have a 2 piece wing. alum wing tube painted black. wings are held on by 4 hooks and rubber bands. tail wheel is identical to my GP cap 27%. just smaller. no foam used. wings built up. wings airfoil is very thin. should fly precision well. comes in electric or glow version. btw EP version comes with a nice motor mount. alum. and adjustable. bottom of the plane is a yellow/orange. same color as the pin-stripe down the side. |
RE: KYOSHO edge 540
Any updates? I'm receiving mine in a couple of days and would like to hear the progress.

thing's that I changed.
- re-did the wheel pants. they use a bolt through the pant held on just by tightening it up to the landing gear. and I believe they wanted holes drilled on both sides of the pant. I glued on some lite ply to the inside of the pants and added a blind nut. I fly off grass and the original way would not have lasted long. - couldn't use the motor mount that comes with the plane. my motor was too wide to fit in it. -elevator servo is suppose to mount inside the fuse. next to the rudder pull-pull servo. it uses a wood rod and two links out the fuselage to move the elevators. same as the fliton extra 330. I didn't use this set up. I put the servo in the tail and connected the two elev. halfs with a piece of alum. works well. - they use ca hinges all around. I used nylon pinned hinges in the tail. got plenty of throw and free flowing hinges now. plus some of the hinges they gave the fabric was separating off the hinge. -using the mini servo's all required adding some wood to make them fit. no biggie. plane went together nice. everything lined up. a lot more room inside than the fliton extra which has a bigger wing span. I was worried about coming out tail heavy going with electric. I ended up a little nose heavy. sliding the battery back a bit on the tray is all I needed. the tail wheel height is adjustable with a set screw. I found out at my grass field that I needed to raise it up a bit cause the rudder was grabbing grass. landing gear is very lite. can't get much liter. ailerons are my only concern and wish they were a little wider. they do travel the entire length of the wing tho. I've only had it up twice now. the first flight had some trimming to do and did a few maneuvers but was too worried about flight time. second time was too windy to tell what was going on. I also want to take it easy on my new battery till it breaks in. I do need a larger prop and an assortment is on the way. also my next battery will be a 6s arrangement. pull out from a hover was a little slow for my tastes, but prop change should take care of that. -plane came out at 5lbs9ozs. not bad and flew very lite. I need more stick time to get a feel for it. but I'm happy so far. |
RE: KYOSHO edge 540
Thanks for the update. I plan on using a Neu 1905/3y with 5s Hyperion 3700 pack and PH-60. I also plan on using 225's all around. How do you think it compares to the Fliton?
Joe |
RE: KYOSHO edge 540
as far as flying goes it's tough to touch the 330. it flew like it was on rails. as far as build goes fliton was pretty bad. kyosho's built wayy better. and has a lot more room inside. I had to do so much stuff to the fliton. only ended up breaking the cf wing tube in half doing a wall. not so good. fabric on the kyosho arrived with no wrinkles. and seems a little lighter than the typical monocote. I had to turn the iron down a bit.
I need more stick time to see what she'll do. I'll try to get some video. should be a fun plane. |
RE: KYOSHO edge 540
Cool. Mine should be waiting for me when I get home. How do you like the new Jeti Spins?
Joe |
RE: KYOSHO edge 540
that's good. hopefully it will arrive in good shape. the spin has been good so far. pretty neat how it logs information about the flight you can download after.

RE: KYOSHO edge 540
BF, got the plane yesterday but really didn't get a chance to look it over completely. Was able to look at the mount. When you used the Hyperion mount did you use the same mounting points as the provided mount? If I do, it looks like I'll need to trim some of the triangle stock.

no joe, I knocked out the blind nuts and centered the mount around the hole in the firewall.

RE: KYOSHO edge 540
It looks really nice. I'm thinking about getting one but put in an Axi 4130 and a 6s lipo.

RE: KYOSHO edge 540
Those are some great tips and it looks great.
I'm a newbie to Electric. I have been flying gas and glow for many years, but because I live in a condo, the ongoing mantenance required by gas and glow fuel planes is too much in my house without a work bench. I thought I would dive into electric since I can build it on my kitchen table. I am waiting for the Edge 540 and plan on applying many of your tips to the plane. The question I have is that they recommend these expensive electronic components like a Hacker motor and speed control, Duralite battery, etc. Do I need to spend that kind of money to get a good running plane? I can fly this on grass expecting the same power as glow fuel? Do they fly and behave the same as glow fuel? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Michael |

Hi mike.
unfortunately, I'm a newbie to electrics (at least this size) too. I picked up most of my information here. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/index.php and http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/ for this plane I used planes in it's category like the fliton extra and the funtana 40. tons of pages on the fliton. things to think about: -size and weight of the plane will make a big difference in cost. -batteries, you seem to get what you pay for. I purchased a lot of stuff from here -http://allerc.com/ good service and any order before 3pm leaves that day. I just ordered another pack from here http://maxamps.com/index.html?lmd=38931.363981 they seem to have good prices and I've heard good things about there batteries. 40 bucks cheaper than my hyperion battery and an extra cell. -battery chargers. don't know if you have one but if you go with more than 4 cells you will probably need a new charger. I had a triton but it won't charge my new batteries. then you got balancers. at 200 bucks a battery it makes since to take care of it. balancer recommended. hyperion and extreme flight have some good deals when you buy a combo package with there planes. hyperion seem to be a little cheaper than axi and hacker. they have esc's, motor's, batteries and accessories. - performance. I have a aeroworks 50 size edge 540 with a saito 100. about the same size. the aeroworks weighs 7 lbs. the kyosho weighs 5lbs 9ozs. the kyosho takes off in half the distance with the set up I have. for performance your set up is everything. I tried for a combo of lite weight with decent power. hobby lobby, all e rc and some others can help you out fit your plane properly if your unsure what to get. - flight performance should be better than glow. no changing cg. better throttle response. you do have to use throttle management limiting full throttle to bursts. so everything is kept cool. but most people don't fly wot all of the time. oh, and of course no clean up. don't get me wrong. I like my four strokes. but I seem to always be tinkering with something. hopefully I won't need to do that with my electric. I hope I've been some help to you. steve. |
RE: KYOSHO edge 540
Ok. I'm sorry to bother you with this dumb question, but I need help. As I said before, I am just getting back into RC and now would like to bring both my future new Electric Edge and my Glow Fuel Cap 232. While building the Edge, I plan on fixing up the Cap.
The problem is, I'm not sure what I need in terms of field equipment. I need a field box to accomodate electric and glow fuel, I have a starter and glow plug with the 12v battery. I have a radio with plenty of servos. I recall people having chargers that could charge both their transmitters and receiver batteries. I need to know which one of those to get. I also need a charger to accomodate the Lith Poly batteries for the new plan. Is there such a thing? Are there adapters to plug into the receiver and transmitter? I have the charger that came with it but that was for a outlet at home. Trying to think what else I need...... Do I need some sort of Balancer for the Lithium Poly? How does that work? I have plenty of tools... I have a power panel for the glow plug, starter and pump, but I don't think that works with electric planes.... Any more help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks |
RE: KYOSHO edge 540
what elec. edge are you getting?
what size battery will it have? if your still flying glow, you will obviously still need your field box. don't need much for the electric. let me know what size battery and I can help with suggestions on a charger. and yes they make field adapters to charge your radio and receiver batteries. only problem is some chargers can only charge 1 thing at a time. I have a few chargers. I don't use a power panel on my glow planes. I have an igniter that is battery powered. and a starter that has a battery pack mounted on it. I don't like the wires hanging in front of a spinning prop. thats up to you. also with elec. think about getting multiple batteries. after use they have to cool. then be charged which can take an hour or so. if you have a few you can fly more often. |
RE: KYOSHO edge 540
I purchased the Kyosho 540 Edge 50.
Where can I get a field adapter to fit the transmitter? Do they plug into the power panel? Is there a specific charger that will do it all and plug into the 12v battery I have plugged into the power panel? |
RE: KYOSHO edge 540
this is the charger I have. http://www.allerc.com/product_info.p...oducts_id=2024
you can charge everything with that. only 1 output though so 1 thing at a time. It will handle all of the newer lipo packs out as well. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXL335&P=M these are rx/tx leads. this is what you should be using to charge your transmitter and receiver packs. they plug into the charger not the power panel. the end of the chargers have little alligator clips to hook up directly to 12v batteries. I use a cheap auto battery and a battery tender at home. when I go to the field I just bring the battery. |
RE: KYOSHO edge 540
Sorry I have another question.
On my Cap 232 glow fuel plane,as I said before I plan on flying that as well..... I had too much of a gap on the elevator so I had previously ironed on some monokote . That has since come off and now I see people using hinge tape. Would that be better and is it easy to apply? Which type should I get? Sorry for all these stupid questions, but I want to make sure when I get back on the field, I know all the up-to-date technology for flying RC. Thanks |
