Bolly Prop for .46 - .50 Hovering?
Has anyone tried the Bolly 13-4.25 carbon props for .46-.50 size hovering/3D airplanes. Bolly advises that they will change the pitch/diameter on any prop for 15%/10% extra, also.
I fly two 3D planes of this size, a Morris the Knife with an MVVS .49 with a tuned pipe & Perry pump & carb and a Laser 3D with an OS 50SX with an Ultrathrust pipe. The best prop for both of these seems to be an APC 12.25-3.75. At hovering power settings, the APC prop is right at the RPM where the engines are on & off the pipes, probably around 12,000 RPM. This requires constant throttle management to maintain a constant altitude hover. It seems like a slightly larger diameter, lower pitched prop would be perfect. Bolly seems to be the only one who manufactures what I am looking for. Robert @ Morris Hobbies suggested trimming the trailing edge on the blades of a wood 14-4. I am going to try this on a Zinger 14-4. Any comments? |
Bolly Prop for .46 - .50 Hovering?
Bolly make small carbon props??? Sweeet!!! I have a 46fx with macs muffler and i run a 11.5 x4 or 11x5 prop on it. I have a 50 but it's new and havent run it yet. A lot of the guys like the 12.25 prop but i think it's too much for the 46's. I dont know how much stronger the 50 is than the 46 but there's a guy at the club that has the 50 in a sig se and i think he run's a 13x6. He doesnt hover so i dont know if its too much or not.
What im trying to get at is, I think a lot of people put too much prop on there motor. I would say a 12x5 or 12.5 x4 would be great on that combo. See if bolly can do that prop. If you get the motor up to or above 13k it will be awsome! My 46 is at 13.5 and pulls like a bulldozer. Do you have a web site for bolly?? i would love to get one. Thanks |
Bolly Prop for .46 - .50 Hovering?
My thinking with a Bolly CF prop would be, the lighter prop would spin up faster. I am running a OS 50 heli version and it spins up great with a APC 12-4. Didn't care for the performance of the 12.25-3.75. If the 13 Bolly would spin it up fast, that would be really worth trying.
I have talked to Falcon, I think, about the CF Bolly Props, however they never had any. |

Bolly Props for 3D/Hovering
Bolly's website is located @ http://www.bollyprops.com.
Both the MVVS .49 & the OS 50 have plenty of power to pull the APC 12.25-3.75 with unlimited vertical acceleration...The issue is trying to get a higher RPM at the hover power settings so that the engines are "on the pipe." I trimmed .200" from the rear of the Zinger 14-4 & blended the rear face to the new front edge. I will probably try it tomorrow. |
Bolly Prop for .46 - .50 Hovering?
They have a 11.8 x 3.8. Now that would be the perfect prop! Man i gotta get one of those! Thanks for the site.
