U-CAN-DO 3D .60, What engine?
 

Hey everyone!! I recently acquired a Great planes U-Can-Do 3D .60 size plane. This will be my first plane to set up for 3D flying. It came with a super tigre g90 2-stroke but it did not have the power to pull straight out of a hover. |It will hover it but it won't pull straight out it just falls out of the hover. |I have been researching on what engine to install in this plane for good 3D performance. |I have it narrowed down to 3 possible choices to give me the power I think it should have and still keep the nose some what light.
I was thinking about the new O.S. AX 1.20 2-stroke, the Saito 1.00 4-stroke or the new Saito 1.25 4-stroke. |The saito 1.25 is a little on the pricey side and if I thought I could get a smaller 4-S such as the 1.00 and still get great power I would rather save the $$$.
|I am sure the O.S. AX 1.20 would also make plenty of power and from every thing I have read they are great 3D engines. Any body who has the U-Can-Do .60 please let me know what you are running on it and how it performs. Any input would be appreciated.

I had a Saito 1.00 in mine, Once the motor was run in and tuned properly, it was OK. Not unlimited vertical but still fun. I then put a Saito 1.25 in it to run in the 1.25 - Man what a difference that made. I am running an APC 17x4w on it at the moment.

The G90 should have enough power, was it tuned properly and what prop did you have. The U-Can-Do is a plane that is not meant to be flown fast so a finer pitch / larger diameter prop is the way to go on it.

If you go to the Saito 1.00, try a 16 x 4 Prop. I had a 15 x 6 on mine when I tried it and I think that the finer pitch would have been much better.

I have the 60 with a G90 and it has unlimited verticle and all you need for 3D, I have a 15x4 APC and the engine is broken in @ about 2 !/2 gals of 15 %. Mine is on it's side so there are no issues with fuel feed.........
Bet you have flooding issues and the engine is not running really clean? Inverted caused lots of problems.

many of the engines you have mentioned will fly the plane pretty good but the overall best engines by RCU members is the saito 1.25 and the ys 110. i have the 125 on mine and its simply great.if pulling out of a hover is what your gonna guage it by then youll love the 125.

Thanks for all the information. If anybody else out there has any thing to add please let me know. I am open to any configurations.
I might give the super tiger another try but I still feel that at least the one I have just doean't make the power that I want. Anybody have the new OS AX1.20 on their U-Can-Do?

The YS 110 and UCD 60 is a wonderfull combo! Hovers at less than 1/2 throttle, up, up and away anytime you want!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice thing about the YS is the pump. Things just keep up at the same pace until you run out of fuel. Have a YS 63 in the 40 UCD replaceing a OS 46. Put the tank in the canopy so I can fly by or hover and torque roll and see my fuel. Neat, engines don't care where you put the tanks. Try one, you will be impressed with the reliability and power, trouble free if you follow directions and leave them alone except for occasional once a year valve check that takes about 5 minutes once you get the hang of things. Most of the guys that grype about the YS 4 stroke difficulties are typically the tinkers who spend half the tank of fuel playing the the needle valve EACH FLIGHT. Same guys that burn up the 2 strokes, can't get them to idle, and blame it on the engine. We have about 3 in our club. I get the engines they can't get to run right, seldom have a problem with them myself after sortilng out and breaking in correctly. Break them in correctly, set a tad rich and leave the things alone unless you notice no smoke trail or engine starts to run a little differently. Time to check out bolt tightness etc. a little preventive manitance. ENJOY

From what I read I understand the YS 110 don't got a pump. The tank is pressurised. The 110 is supercharged. I have a YS 63 - no pump, pressurised fuel sytem.

A 2 stroke with 0.9 cubic inch displacement shoud easily develop a little more than 10 lbs thrust. Your 50x should weigh less than 5 lbs. 10 lbs thrust will pull a 5 lb plane straight up with 1 g acceleration until the plane gets going fast enough to develop a lot of drag. It sounds like your engine should do the job but isn't running very well.

As I stated earlier, I have the exact same set-up and it works well. My engine is on it's side which is no problem as the mounts work well both ways. The Muffler will extend down and work, I do not have the engine cowl on...seems cowls invite problems requiring removal right after installation. I plan on a Pitts Muffler.
Running right the ST 90 will work well with the 15x4 APC wide blade. Before going and spending a small fortune on a YS or other engine I at least would try and work out the existing problems.

If you dont get anywhere with the ST G90 then compare the weight between OS 1.20 AX & ST 90,bet the difference is not that much. If not, consider the 1.20 AX as a great 3-D engine for the Do and other planes as well. I have one in an X100 @ 8.75# and its amazing.

Thanks everyone for all the great information but I finally decided to go with a 2-stroke. I purchased the O.S. AX1.20. From everything I have read it is an awesome powerplant. If I have any fuel delivery problems I can always add a cline regulator (they work fanstastic. I have one on my ST G90 and It runs flawlessly). I haven't had a chance to bench test the 1.20 yet but I know O.S. quality and I am sure that this will be a great performer in the U-Can-Do. Thanks again everyone for the input.

Have you flown or tested the os 1.20 ax yet? I'm thinking of using it in a sig mayhem and am curious how it performed for ya'.

I JUST BOUGHT THE U-CAN-DO 60 AND ORDERRED A OS 1.20AX TO HAUL THIS BABY VERTICAL. THE SPECS FROM OS REGARDING 2 STROKES FOR THIS AIRPLANE ARE - 1) .91FX - 2.8HP @ 15,000 RPM'S / WEIGHT= 19.3 OZ. 2) .95AX - 2.9HP @ 15,000 RPM'S / WEIGHT= 20 OZ. 3) 1.20AX - 3.1HP @ 9,00 RPM'S / WEIGHT= 21 OZ. = NOW WITH THAT INFORMATION, I COULDN'T SEE ANY REASON TO NOT BUY THE 1.20AX. IT'S SIZE IS ALMOST IDENTICAL TO THE .91FX, WEIGHS 1.7 OZ.'S MORE, AND GIVES ALMOST 1/3 OF A HORSE, MORE POWER !!! THE GAVEL HITS THE SOUND BLOCK AND "SOLD" !!!! THE 1.20AX ALSO COMES WITH 2 ADAPTERS AND THE MUFFLER. I BOUGHT MINE BRAND NEW FOR $255 SHIPPED W/ TAXES. IF ANYONE HAS SOME PICS OF THIS ENGINE INSTALLED, WOULD YOU PLEASE POST OR SEND THEM ??? ALSO, HAS ANYONE HAD A FUEL LEAKING PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE MOUNTED UPSIDE DOWN ? NOT SURE IF THAT'S AN ISSUE OR NOT. THANKS !!
