What went wrong?
I am still learning 3d with my funtana x50 and to say the least, am having a blast. I did last weekend have a strange thing happened. I think i know the problem but want to consult with the experts just to make sure :D.
Struggling to hold the plane in a hover, the plane stalled out but this time the right wing dropped and the plane king of fell into a difficult to control dive/spin. Kind of like a blender but not to that extreme. I was able to get out of it and imidiatly landed. I am thinking i could have been one of four things 1. Pilot error 2. Wind shear 3. Glitch 4. Too far foward CG The most foward recomended cg was 129mm. But that had been balanced before i added a pump and a more suitable (heavier) size motor mount for the large engine. I also added an apc 16-4 along with it over a wood 15-6. Never tried rebalancing it. The plane does seem to stall pretty easily at slow speeds. Anyway, I am switching back to the stock muffler from those stupid pitts mufflers [:'(] and in the process removing the pump. I will definatley rebalance the plane while i am at it and i think i will shoot for 130-132mm as my balance point. |
RE: What went wrong?
Sounds like a combo of pilot error and a CG that is too far forward.

RE: What went wrong?
Thanks, Just wanted to make sure there wasn't something structually wrong with it. I am going to try a slightly farther back cg next time and just get more and more used to the plane. Sometimes you got to just get used to these quorks and learn when they are going to happen. I remember hearing alot of people say that the sfg's improve the flight perfrormance alot in terms of stalling. Havn't tried them myself because they are so close to the ground
Casey, i am using an sk 90 two stroke. It is ported for big props and loves to turn props between 8000-1000. Spool up is like a 4 stroker. :D |
RE: What went wrong?
That's the same thing "sort of" that happened to a club member, after doing a slow low H. A. K. E.
down the runway then he went into a slow H. A. rolling circle as he has done so many times with his F90, but on the second roll the plane stalled out and there was no recovery till it stopped on the deck... He does fly very slow, and it dropped a wing once before but saved it... This is on the the X-100... He said he would buy another F90(3) but that's it for the other... |
RE: What went wrong?
What is strange is it has never done that before. I think it has something to do with the balance, bothe horizontal and lateral. Actually it tipped to the side the engine is mounted on. THe engine is side mounted. You think over 1-1/2 pounds of engine leaning on one side would effect it. Anway, when i had my fl 70 4c in it it never did that, i also had the balance right on at 130. I am thinking that if i balanced it at the moment it would be between 125-127mm. To nose heavy IMO.

RE: What went wrong?
On the funtana 40\50. moving the CG from 125-127 mm to 130-132 will not have any noticable difference. If you read the threads on the Funtana 40, guys are running their CG about 5.75 to 60 in. ( 140 to 150mm about). got the CG on my funatna 40 about 145mm back. they do tend to drop a wing from time to time. Just thinking you may have droped the throttle a bit too far back. just a thought.

RE: What went wrong?
you just plain ran out of altitude -airspeed and ideas - all at the same time
If you had a background of hours of flying -not 3D hover type flying -- the whole thing would make more sense - just keep at it -you will get there -- |
RE: What went wrong?
Thanks for the help
