Creek katana 120

I have a creek katana 120 on order. I was called by creek to thank me for my order. They told me that the second run has some changes, one of which is color. Does anyone know what the color scheme looks like and what other changes they may have made.

I have one of the first Katanas with the doubled beveled edges. It's covered with Econokote yellow. The cowl color wasn't even close to matching. The new runs are supposed to Ultrakote I think.Plane and cowl color are supposed to matchThe Econokote isn't bad,a little transparent and I painted the cowl and wheel pants anyway.

Thanks for the reply, I sure do hope is't ultracote and not econo. Your changes look great. Double beveled edges will be a nice change. Hopefully it will ship soon.

I heard somewhere that the second run planes had better color matching on the cowls.

My Katana setup

Here we go.

3w24 motor w/ Johnson Pitts style exhaust spinning an 18x8 3w wood prop w/ Vortec 3 1/2" spinner
Hitec servos: 625mg's on elevator halves and ailerons
645mg on rudder w/ kevlar pull-pull
85mg micro on throttle
Robart hingepoints
Dubro large scale T-style control horns
Dubro 16 oz. tank mounted on cg
Sullivan tailwheel assembly
CG at 4 1/2"
Dry weight at 11 lbs. 10 ozs.
1400 ma NiCad on receiver
1400 ma NiMH on ignition

I didn't trust the spring system for the wings,so I now mount the wings to the fuse with 1/4" nylon bolts from inside the fuse.
I can't say about any flight characteristics because by the time I finished the plane, there was a foot of snow and it was 10 degrees outside here. :(
I had to shorten the motor box 1 inch to mount the motor and fabricate a mount with standoffs.A bit of a pain, but it turned out really well.

Here's a pic. Hank

What is the price of one of these Creek 120 sizers? It is confusing, with some places on the site mentioning 199.99 and others 289.99.
Thanks

Hank, that's a great weight for a gasser this size. My Creek Extra can't be much lighter with the OS 1.60. I have plenty of power for anything. I was hoping mine would be so light I could land at a crawl but it stalls pretty quick. Landings don't need to be "hot", but faster than I expected. Good luck. Hope to read a flight report soon.

I live about an hour away from creek hobbies and I heard that these planes are real crap. Is that true?

I heard stuff like all the models have the same wing, the balance is never on the spar and the construction is really awful.

I am not putting down creek hobbies, but this is what I hear.

I think the reason the plane came out at this weight is I didn't have to add alot of lead to the nose to balance it.I read on here that guys were adding about 8 to 10 ozs. to the nose to balance with the 1.60.
I figure that my power to weight ratio will about 1.6 to 1.Enough to hover and pull out,but nowhere near unlimited. It should be a fun plane to play with though. If I like the characteristics of it.I'm thinking of getting the Aeroworks 35% Katana when they are available.(Maybe says my wife, she just doesn't understand).
When I fly the plane.I'll be sure to put a report on here.

da_man ... from what i have seen they are some of the finest constructed ARFS around today.

No,they don't have the same wings. My Katana is balanced just in front of the wing tube and I'll probably have to move it back over the tube for 3D flying.I've gone as far as removing the covering from the bottom of my plane so I could set up my pull-pull.The construction is of really good quality.I'm not really a builder, but I was impressed with it.I don't know where you got your info, but have'nt heard anything bad about them yet.The people on here seem to like them,as do I.

Hey Hank,

Did you just paint over the Ultra, Econo, Mono, Tower or whatever "Cote" it is?

I guess I just got some bad info. Maybe I will get one when I get some room.

I just finished the Staudacher and I thought the construction was great. The covering job was excellent, but the yellow econokote is slightly transparent. I know I couldn't have finished one this good. Certainly no complaints with the flying characteristics. Flies great with the OS 1.60.

The cowl is painted with Lustercote Paint from TopFlight. The design behind the cowl is CircusPink Monokote. The wheel pants are painted with the same paint.Other than that,it's just the way it was when I took it out of the box.

Actually, I didn't have to add any weight and the cg is over the wing tube. Flies good. As far as quality, the fit and finish is not the best I've seen, but for the price its a good model.

Anyone else find with the Creek Katana that if you put the engine on the reccomended 50mm from the top of the firewall thrustline that the @!!&&&! cowl doesnt line up with the spinner!

I went with their measurements and my cowl lined up.

MHawker 02-10-2003 05:44 PM

We discussed the alignment of the cowl over at the Creek Extra thread. The pics in the directions called for a 43mm measurement, but the specs said 50mm.

I installed mine at the 50mm mark, and my cowl does not line up. Another guy used the 43mm and it lines up much better. Not a big deal to me, but I can see how it would be a problem for some.

I finally got an e-mail from Matt at creek, he told me that there was 2 changes in the second run of Katanas. One is all flight controls are doubled beveled, and there are two colors to choose from, a yellow and pink and a blue and white.

Katana and econokote

How do I deal with the bubbles in the econokote covering? I've used low heat, hi heat, iron, gun. All with more bubbles appearing. I'm working with one aileron only. No use screwing all the surfaces. Any help would be most appreciated. Mike

Just ironing out thr bubbles doesn't work b/c the trapped air has no where to go. ***** the pockets with a pin then gently heat the area et voila! no more bubbles.

What is the Creek Katana covered with. People have said it is covered with yellow Econokote, I have a roll of yellow Econokote but the color doesn't match.
