POLL!!?? Flip VS UCD ?????
Hey 3D Nuts, Which is more FUN overall Flip or UCD? Anyone have both? Can you describe their strong and weak points, engine combos. Thanks :) JIM
|
Flippy
I own both.
Two different flying airplanes. They both do many of the 3D tricks well, however there are some differences. I like the Flip better. The UCD is more stable, flys similar to a pattern plane. Meet me at the field some day and I can tell you the difference between the two, not sure I could accurately do it in writing. That, and you can't see my hands move when describing flying them. Don't own either, but from what I heard (and read) my money would go with Flip 3d every time.

U-can
Hi Crazyjimbo I really like my U-CAN it flys a nice slow pace with a 16x4 prop it is a great IMAC practice plane it flys allot bigger than it is. I have only seen a flip fly one time. It only went about 50ft and crashed (radio problems) Mark,

Wow... personally I'd never consider my UCD as an IMAC trainer... its far too sloppy, and the coupling is horrendous. I've never flown a Flip, but I'd call Ynots assesment of the UCD pretty close to spot on - it may be "more like" a pattern aircraft than a Flip, but certainly <not> a good pattern ship.

I was going to buy another hype 3D, but im gonna go for the flip now if i can get one soon in the UK.

U-CAN
Hi desertrat I would have to agree and disagree the U-CAN is sloppy tracking but if there is one thing that 99% of IMAC flyer's need is practice using the rudder. and far as coupling goes if you cut the wingtips off and reduce your rudder throw it knife edges pretty good even at a slow speed.I like practicing with it better than with a pattern plane because of the slow pace and it makes you work the entire flight. POLL!!?? Flip VS UCD ?????
I have been following a couple of posts around this subject, and noting the possible differences of opinion implied by the term 3D. I tend to consider 3D falling into two categories for fixed wing - 3D aerbobatic, which I consider to be a pattern or scale aerobatic aerocraft designed or altered for 3D manouvres, and then 3D Fun Fly, which is likely to be a mid/low winger fun fly model which does outrageous 3D manouvres but is not practicaly for smooth flowing aerobatic manouvres.
Anyway, the Flip 3D arrived on my door step in January last year, direct from the factory ni China - I was to do a review on it for the british magazines. My conclusions in short that this was the most accurate 3D Fun fly I had ever flown (and Ive flown a few), most notable for its good knife edge and reasonably pure yaw control. For me this model has come the closed to bridging the Fun Fly / 3D Aerobatic gap to date, but it is still a 3D fun Fly at the end of the day.... The reason the article, which was very complementary, has not be published yet, is because the Kyosho importer for UK has failed ot pull it's finger out of it's arse and get them in !! When and if they do it will be a massive seller, but I fear they are too busy trying to push their own brand stuff... The only criticism I had as far as I recall for the model was the colour scheme - a love it or hate it scheme I think, and definitely not for me. The underneath is nice though ! By the way - whats a UCD ? Also, have you seen the thread on the New Products category about 56" 3D Aerobatic Wonder? I flew a prototype this weekend and its bloody great.... Now that has been designed to bridge the 3D Fun Fly / Aerobatic gap, but this time with a bias toward aerobatic that huge fat section fun fly. Prop hangs pretty good too and with a rearward cg does some mental TOC style manouvres - just a bit quicker thats all. Another prototype fittd with YS 63 and metal gear servos (just to make it as heavy as we could) came in just under 5lbs. The lightest model with an Irv 39 was just indeed 4lbs ! Take a look at the thread and more info will follow some time in the next couple of weeks. |

Archie
What did you use for power on the flip and what did the whole thing weigh? |
POLL!!?? Flip VS UCD ?????
I used a YS 63 which was the only option in my view, with an APC 13x4W. I substitued the M2 rods for M3 threaded rod, used 9450 digi servos, and ended up with an AUW of about 2.3 kg max.

Are you familiar with the Laser 3d, made,in Belgium I believe, and how it compares to the flip; size, performance, weight, and power required? 5.5 lbs for my Pizazz with a YS63 is just to much weight for a small plane and the distributor told me 7+ lbs for a UCD with a 2 stroke 60. Again to much. 5 lbs for a flip sounds real good. I've seen a Lazer 3d fly with an OS50 with an ultra thrust muffler and it looked good and light. I've heard claims of 4 to 4.5 lbs. |
POLL!!?? Flip VS UCD ?????
Laser 3D - yes I used to own one..... again fitted with YS 63.
Not all that keen on it so I sold it, and the ply was too heavy. 4-4.5lbs - I doubt it as standard kit, but it depends if builder too steps to lighten it, what servos were used, and of course the 2 stoke would have been a bit lighter. The thing with the Lazer is it has a lot of wing area. I flew one also with a OS 50 and it was fine from a power to weight ratio. Pizzazz is aweful and again heavy - too much hi grade ply, and a bit of cheek to claim to be a 3D model or Fun Fly in the true sense if you ask me!. I would say that the two better fun flys of this type at the moment are the Flip 3D and a fairly close second is the Weston UK Hype 3D...... but I suspect that the Hype is not quite so robust as the Flip. The Flip could so with a carbon or GRP u/c instead of the soft alloy one though. Gotta go, Baby Daughter is yelling....... again !! new hobby ! |

A couple of things:
Archie, I'm with you. The airplanes are evolving with 3D capable Scale Aerobatic planes, specific 3D planes and then there are the splits between 3D and pattern planes. (I have a new Diablo 2000 that splits them all. Scale Aerobatic design, looks like a pattern plane with 3D surfaces.) I am excited in the current direction the aerobatic designs are going. Can't wait to see what we have in a year from now, 5 years from now. WOO HOO!!!!! UCD: U-Can-Do 3D, by Great Planes. dilyon: The Laser 3D is almost a carbon copy of a Madness. They both fly much like the Flip. The big difference is the rudder. The Flip is 100% rudder. Both the Laser and the Madness both can come in at 4.5 The flip is a bit heavy for its size, (it could loose a pound) however flys great. |
POLL!!?? Flip VS UCD ?????
Carbon Copy ? I would not agree, although it is aloing the same lines. I believe Madness is lighter and as an all rounder a better model, save for the error in the centre section of the tail.
The Elevs on the Lazer are too big and prone to vibration if not set up properly. I also dont think it looks as nicely proportioned as the Madness. Im not sure I would agree the flip is too heavy. For a mass production kit, you can not go too light with these models cos you will always get someone who doesnt fly it properly and then something fails, so they blame the kit, as opposed to their style of flying. For competition, there is no substiture to self build, co then you know exactly how far you can go. YNOT, looking forward to your reply to my email following your original one....... |

ynot, how does the diablo 2000 fly 3D and all? I've been so curious. Also, what did you power yours with?
Thanks, JW |

Ynot
I'm about to build a Laser 3D. I modified a Dazzler with tail feathers like a UCD but find the wing loading too high of something. (The leading edge is a big fat rounded square) If you were to modify a Laser 3D What would you change. I just got back from flying My 1/3 scale Pitts and did my first sloppy waterfall and a couple of pretty cool prop hangs. I want to practice 3D But the stakes are too high with the Pitts. |
POLL!!?? Flip VS UCD ?????
I guess the real questions I have about the laser 3D are;
Would expanding the fusalage side area improve its overall performance especially flat spins and knife edge flight? And other than structural modifications would the model benefit from a foiled or enlarged empenage. How does the Laser 3D compare to the Flip or the UCD? Mahalo, Mark |
