Looking for a 3D plane
 

Just wondering on which one to get.. I want a .40 size, i have an OS .46 FX and I want to move up this summer.. I have good flying skills and I improve really fast so I want to get something intermediate to advanced. Something I can grow into.. I also want to keep it under $120 and I like the scale look of the extra 300 and the edge's... I was looking at the hangar 9 twist too, kinda like that one... Anyone have any ideas?? I can't wait til this summer when I buy it and I cna finally start doing some actual aerobatics...practicing on my brother in law's flight sim is getting me pumped up big time :-D

I also really like how the Yak 54 flies on the sim..very fun..just need some help deciding which one is better quality/price and price/flight capabilities ratio.

Gee I can't believe I will get in first on this suggestion for this one.
If you want a great 3d plane that is easy to fly, is tough a nails (and you'll need that for when you're learning as well as when you become more confident and push the boundaries even further), suits a 46FX very well, is cheap to buy and easy to build.

You'll have a hard time finding a 40 size "scale" 3d plane that has enough power with a 46fx. Ya - profiles don't look all that great but they have it where it counts....

For under $120 you can get an OMP Katana 46 V2 ARF that will 3D pretty good with a 46FX. I've got one and it's a nice flying plane that's well designed and built. Here's a video of my old Accel Kat 40 GS that's nearly identical in weight and flight performance to the Kat 46 V2.

If you want to build a kit, the Mojo would be hard to beat, and the 46FX would be a great match for it.

IMHO the Twist isn't really a 3D plane at all. It's more like a sport plane with oversized control surfaces.......like the Dazzler/Uproar.

Hmmm.....So what does a normal 3D plane do that a twist or dazzler can't? Just throws and stuff?

In order of preference, my selection would be as follows:
1. Edge 540
2. Katana
3. Sukhoi
4. Yak 54
5. Extra 300L

They are all scale aerobatic planes :)
You choose the size and brand that you like...

Problem with most scale aerobats is that they are heavy. The Kyosho Edge 540 comes in at 5 pounds according to MAN review this month. Stay away from the Twist and other full fuse fun flies. They are loaded with coupling and get boring very fast. I went through the fun fly phase and quickly got out. They all fly the same (no knife edge and horribly wobbly in high alpha). The only fun fly's that fly good are the profiles. That Katana profile is a very nice flying profile for $100. Ugly but fun to fly (doesn't do everything well though). Also you might want to jump to 60 size, the smaller stuff is always squirrely.

You want a scale plane. And a 3D flyer. Someone mentioned Mojo, but its not scale.

Well think again. A mojo fuse can be REALLY EASLY modified to a scale looking plane. Then put on a scale covering job. Makes the warbird guys crazy!

the Twist is NOT a 3D plane. it won't Harrier, wall or blender, or knife edge well.

Although it's a little more expensive and not scale, You may also want to consider the funtana 50x. The .46 won't have enough power unless you build it extremely light. but I think power will still be marginal. This plane will do anything you ask but the c.g. has to be pretty far back. My funtana is powered by evolution .61 and at a little over 5lb it's a perfect match. These planes help me excell realy well in 3d.
Nitro models has a .40 sized yak that may work out well also. I havn't flown one but I have their 90 sized extra 330l (isn't realy 90 sized more like 60 2 stroke) This plane is a 3d monster and suprisingly flies with good precision. At $130 it may be an option if you can afford an engine. I powered mine with a low cost gms .76 This plane flies similar to the yak on the sim.

Someone mentioned the key earlier, a good 3-d plane needs to be light. Wing loading is the key, when you get a full fuselage airplane you wind up adding 1/2 lb or more of weight. That can be huge for a .40 sized plane.

If you are trying to learn 3-d you should buy a plane that is tough and will stand a few crashes into the ground. Hovers and such are easier down low because you can see what the plane is doing better. But you will most likely crash it a time or two. Mojo's will tolerate this well, swanyhouse.com also has a few others that would do well, I have a Burrito and it is a fantastic 3-d learning plane. EASY to fly. Easier than the mojo to learn on I think. The Katana that some have mentioned is ok too, I much prefer my burrito to it though. My burrito came in a 4 lbs 2 oz ready to fly with a .46AX on it. The Katana is 4lb 15oz with a Saito .80. The twist is closer to 5.5 lbs. I hate my twist, have only flown it 3-4 times now. Does NOT do 3-d well. The katana is easy to fly, but the burrito beats it hands down.
I have since built a Mojo 60 size and love that plane.... 1000 sq. in. of wing area and only 5.5 lbs. FUN.

If you want an arf and aren't up to the building check out billyhellrc.com they have a couple of .40 sized profile arf's that are cheap and light. Would work great. If you are dead set against profiles then I would agree with what JoeAirPort said... go to a .60 size.

General guidelines I have found... if you don't wanna mess with calculating wing loading:
~750 sq. in. of wing surface with a weight of 4-4.5 lbs is good (.40 sized) Go much heavier than that and 3-d performance suffers.

That being said, there are pilots who can 3-d a brick. You would think they are flying the best plane made when you watch them fly, but if you are trying to learn, (as I am) get something that makes it as easy as possible... and once you know some maneuvers then move up to some bigger scale plane.

OK yae, I'lll check into these liek the katana and getting a .60 size....So would a .60 engine run one of them .40 size edge's pretty good?? or what should I do for that??

Yep!! But a 60 size Edge would fly much better. I think Aeroworks has a 50/60 sized one.

OK...I think I have it narrowed down that I'm going to buy a new engine....should I go with the .61 super tigre or the .75?? They're fairly close in price and the .75 only weighs a few ounces more.. Thanks again guys... again..I believe i'm going to purchase a .40-.50 size sport/aerobatic/3D plane

Ok..I was just looking at planes again...are there any 50-60 size edges yaks or planes that look like that that are still very aerobatic?? Would the Super Tigre .75 be way too much power for the .40 size edge from tower?? Need help!!

k..Yea so I figured it out taht I'm getting a .75 Super Tigre.... I need a 50-60 size to go with that.. i want a plane that will be somewhat durable, scale looking, and aerobatic and PREFERABLY under $150 (considering I'm buying a new engine and radio AND plane... originally had planned to just buy radio and airplane and put my 46 fx on it but I gues that's not enough power)

What's a decent weight for a plane for a .75 engine?? I'm seeing 60 size planes that are like 7 lbs, idk if that's too much or not

what about for a .75 Thunder Tigre engine?? I think I might jump up to a 61 engine, but then I was thinking if I'm getting that, the .75 isn't much more expensive or heavy but it does have a little more power..
that funstar doesn't look too bad, I'll check into that one
