Rolling Harriers
Hey fellas, having a little trouble with rolling harriers on the G2 w/ Cap 2X, do ya use full elevator for the harrier roll? I know it will take some time to finally get it, but am I cant get the cap to hold high alfa. Should I move the CG back on the set ups or just keep logging hours?..thanks,

It should do it, I think i dropped the high rate aileron response down a little. One thing I've noticed is in reality ( I can do them, just not reliably) to do it you'll need alot of rudder movement, but little elevator movement. The rudder seems to be the best way to keep the nose up high, with only using the elevators to help smooth it out and to help with harrier rolling circles. After watching the 2000 TOC video it became apparent thats this is how its sposed to be done. Happy Flying Richard |

My set up on G2 has full rudder throw, and it's about 75% of the chord. My cg is about -4. It will hold high alpha at about a 1/2 throttle setting.

Rolling Harriers
I haven't tried to harrier roll on the sim. I'm pretty new to it in real life. On my 35% extra 260 I've found that I can harrier roll using just the elevator. I use only about half the throw that I use for waterfalls and stuff.
Here's how I do it : 1) get in a harrier 2) add full aileron deflection and about 2 clicks of throttle (I don't use a rachet and couldn't get the throttle precision I needed with one) 3) full down, center, full up, center, full down, center.... At first the plane had a tendency to work the nose up into a hover. I fixed this by decreasing my elevator throw for harrier mode until it stopped. I've done harrier point rolls and harrier slow rolls using both the rudder and elevator. I've never tried normal harrier rolls with just the rudder. Now I have something to do this weekend! |

I'd guess I'm at 25-30 for harrier rolls. I'm still tuning the harrier roll rate and haven't put a throw meter on it.
I run about 13 degrees for normal flight and 65 for waterfalls. |

I have about 45 degrees plus on the elevator and a lot on rudder.Wham the elevator and rudder all the way to during the manuver and just use the throttle to adjust the angle of attack- add throttle and it will rise to vertical, decrease throttle to just above idle and it turns into a rolling vertically descending elevator which looks awesome!

okay this may sound off but on my Edge if i use full elevator it will snap. What are you guys doing to prevent this?
is it different while doing slow maneuvers with full throw on elevator? |

Way different while slow - you need a lot for 3D when the wing is already stalled.

Okay I see now. I was using low rates on my elevator full time because i did not want it to snap. I could hold it in hover but seen that I could have used more throw on elevator. I just was not sure if it would do same thing on a lot of throw at lower speeds. I did not want it to snap while I was entering a hover low to ground.

The entire trick to 3D flight is to remain below stall speed. A snap is a situation in which one wing or elevator half is stalled and the other isn't. Regular flight = both flying. 3D = neither flying. Snap is 1 flying.
Back to the post topic. Sunday I was doing flying backward rolling harriers into a 15 MPH headwind. Rolling a plane that's flying forward but going by you backward will mess with your head! |

I have been practicing them quite a bit over the last 3 months and am getting low and slow with them.
The trick I have found is you dont want too much elevator throw or you will be too high of alpha or in some models you will snap the wing. You also need to start with rudder then add the elevator. Dont bang the sticks at the same time, this will make them very jerky and not fluid. Also throttle control is critical and is what will give you a higher alpha. I hit the gas a bit on the inverted sides too keep the nose up. As BarryB stated ,try it in a wind it is actually easier. I was just doing them tonight before sundown in a 20mph and it is fun holding the plane in one spot while rolling. P.S. Be caerful on the downwind side,you loose half your authority as you slide with the wind. It almost got my buddy tonight. |
