3d setup servo question
what would be the minimal amount of torque per servo needed for each control surface.... 1 for rudder, 1 per aileron, and 2 for each elevator halve for 3D flying
*Edit.... LOL i forgot to mention the size of the plane...sorry its more than like going to be a 40-60 sized Edge 540 |
RE: 3d setup servo question
You want the most you can afford.
Do not skimp on gear when it comes to 3D. |
RE: 3d setup servo question
ORIGINAL: YNOT You want the most you can afford. Do not skimp on gear when it comes to 3D. It would be helpful if you revealed what type of application you are interested in. Whatever the manufacturer recommends, try to double it, (this applies to glow planes only). YNOT is right again. The 'most you can afford' is just about the best answer, given the information provided. When you get into larger planes, this is still true, but the choices are simple...JR8711 or Futaba 9156. There is also the HiTec 9155, I think. Speed and power are at a premium in 3D flying. That leads, inevitably, to higher cost (dammit). Do yourself a big favor and buy the best stuff you can afford. I wasted hundreds of dollars in an effort to save about a hundred dollars on servos, (and that was just one plane). It's just not worth it. Listen to those who fly so much better than you it makes you want to pee. Don't listen to the 'experienced' guys who still can't fly after 30 years. 3D requires LOTS of servo power, get more than you 'need'. Period. |
RE: 3d setup servo question
Metal - what plane are you talking about? A simple 40 sized 4 lbs profile or a 107" 100 cc plane? One thing you want to make sure if you are on the lower end is to ensure your gears do not strip ... not just sufficient torque but also the safety factor.
Was Kyle using only HS 645s on his Funtana 90? :) |
RE: 3d setup servo question
sorry guys, i forgot to mention what size the airplane will be... well i dont have it yet, but it will probably be a 40 -60 size airplane
i was thinking hitec 5245 for each elevator halve, and HS 625s for the rudder and each aileron thanks for your replies guys |
RE: 3d setup servo question
the servos u mention will work

RE: 3d setup servo question
You probably won't need 625s on the ailerons for the two planes you are interested in. 225s should be quite good and run you a bit less money and a bit less weight.
The 625 on the rudder is good, but the 5245 may be a bit better just because it has better holding power due to it being digital. I'm thinking 4x 5245s for simplicity - one on each aileron, one on each elevator and one on the rudder. HS 65HB or HS81 should be perfect for the throttle. 225s on the ailerons would be good if you want to save a few bucks. Just my 2 cents. Good luck and let us know which plane you decide on as well as how you plan on equipping it! RE: 3d setup servo question
thanks for your input RVM, it turn out my brother says i can use his saito 150, so i will be upgrading to a 60-90 sized not sure which arf yet, but soon hopefully at the end of the week when i get paid...
do you think 625's will be suffiecient on a 60-90 plane with a saito 150 ?...... I dont mind if they arent digital, as long as they center alright would 5245's be too small? thanks in afdvance |
RE: 3d setup servo question
I would imagine that with the 5245s it would depend on the plane. I'd go with something a bit stronger, so the 625s should be just the ticket. On a 90 sized plane go with the MG version.

RE: 3d setup servo question
Just to let you know Troy Built Models has a chart that lists the different servos and their recommended application. It is helpful in picking the right servo for your plane. There is a lot of helpful information on that site about setups of different size aircraft for 3D, IMAC ect.
