Hi everyone,
Yesterday I picked up an already built Seagull Models Edge 540. We spent last night putting all my radio gear/engine etc in it.

At the end of it, the model weighed 8.5 pounds.

I was really excited about this model, I really liked the way it looked and all that kind of thing. The guy who owned it before me had never flown it.

My mate took it up for its first flight to check and trim it out.
3/4 around the first circuit one of the elevators came off and then 5 seconds later, the wings folded and clapped hands. ALL THIS IN LEVEL FLIGHT.

The old hands at the field were disgusted in the construction of the model saying something about the balsa had been put in with the grain the wrong way etc. I don't know much about planks as I usually fly RC Helis but brought this for something different.

I'm highly annoyed and will be calling the people who I brought it from and telling them what I think.

However, now I'm left with the problem of what to replace it with? I really like the Edge 540 shape and I have everything I need for another one (OS 91, 9202 servos etc). I'm thinking I wouldn't want to go over 70 inches with an OS 91.

Can anyone offer some suggestions? I'm not really into building. I'm more into bolting things together like with helis, so some type of ARF would be a good start. I'd like to get into 3D flying.

get a 60/90 edge from yellow aircraft. Just finished mine and it is awesome. 7lbs. 3oz. complete. it should have unlimited vertical with the o.s. 91 FX. The quality of Y/A is great. this is my second plane from them and all I can say is wow! Good luck and sorry about your edge.

better idea, save up some money and get an AW 36% Edge and a DA 100. much better. the thing is a real blast to watch. great for 3d and IMAC. a little more expensive though. P. S. dont take my advice seriously this was just a joke. Ha Ha. My friend owns a beautiful AW edge. like i said it is a BLAST!!!!!!! here is a pic. Happy Flying. Stikman.

I have a Yellow Aircraft Edge540T .60 size myself and it is a very well built and awesome plane to fly. It will do everything in the book and it loves to hover.

Unfortunately I crashed it about a month ago due to me misjudging a tree on landing. It was a terrible loss but I have just now finished rebuilding it. Cant wait to get it back in air.

I realize you are upset about what has happened to your aeroplane, but before you discard the seagull models as rubbish, I would like to know if you know the full story behind the plane that you got.

This plane had been rebuilt twice already & had never been off the ground.

Did the plane show any signs of being rebuilt?

Lanier's smallest Edge arf is a 1/4 scale 1.20 size.

Well... what am I missing? If the plane was smashed and rebuilt improperly, why the disgust with Seagull?

If you buy something second hand that you do not know the history of, it is not necessarily the brand or manufacturer that is at fault.

Its a small world. That plane was hit while it was in the Pits, and never flew..

Im curious Kiwicuz what the rest of the history is. All I know is it got rebuilt (by the new owner) and then sold.

Yeah this is the same plank. The wreckage isn't with me anymore.

I don't know much about the construction of planes, but the experienced ones at our field said the wood was too thin through the center of the wing and something about the grain of the wood going the wrong way?

I could get someone to put in writing what they thought of it though to get it to make more sense for you guys.

It's a shame, from the outside, it was a beautiful little plane. certainly couldn't see any repair marks on it. As I understand the damage was only to the tail? Not the wing?

The plane was fully built up when I got it. Like I said, an elevator fell off first, then the wing snapped on the right hand side just past where the cock pit is mounted.

I can assure you Secret Squirrel that the wing wasnt damaged on the inital accident only the back half of the plane as shown in the Photo. I was the owner of it, when the incident happend the wing was not on the plane. Kiwicuz stated that it had had two accidents, Im unsure of the second incident and Im keen to know of it. The person that took this plane off my hands is still under training and never flew the plane either and I know that for a fact.

Im sorry to hear about your loss as it was/ is a good looking plane.

I am recommending the Aerworks Edge 540T .60/.90 ARF for you. Is an amazing aircraft that will fly well with that O.S. .91 that you have. It goes for $275.00 at www.chiefaircraft.com. The wingspan is 64". Its a pretty nice aircraft. I will let you do the honors.

I spoke with the people I brought it off (brought it through a model shop) and they've rebuilt it for me and will test fly it to ensure it's all good. They've braced up the wing and fuselage areas where they believe it needed it.

Look forward to getting it back and seeing how it goes.

I think really all you need to do is go and see mike briggs and buy one of his 2m extra 260's and shove a os 160fx in it, 10 times the model and probably a similar price of one of those 120 sized arf's.

3D Mike,

What is the name of that plane that you have for you pic. Its red and yellow. Do you own it or did you get it from a site. Well anyway, it looks good. I could do some things with it.
