Anyone using 2.5" spinner on UCD?

Was wondering how it looked? I'd like to get a truturn for my UCD with Saito 100, but the only 2.25" spinner that will fit a 15x6apc pro is the Jett spinner with a special cut. I'm not too crazy about that idea. The 2.5" standard 120 will house the 15x6 apc prop without modification. I'm just wondering if it would look ok on the UCD?

The "Jet" 2.25" Tru Turn spinner with the 120 slot will hold the APC 15x6 fine. No diff than the 120 slot on the 2.5" standard. I just ordered the 2.25" Jet Tru Turn for my Saito 100 swingin' an 15x6 APC.

EdMan,

The 2.25" TruTurn Jet Style with the "1.20 cut" will not fit the APC 15 x 6. I tried it and wound up sending the 2.25 Jet spinner to TruTurn for the special cut. It took about 10 days and $16 round trip. I had the spinner cut for the 15 x 6 and 16 x 4.

Well I talked to Stephanie at Truturn and she informed me that the jet was the only spinner that would fit a 15x6 apc and for that to happen I'd still need to have it cut. She said the standard or "normal" 2.25 spinner could not even be cut to fit the 15x6. I don't know what to think to be honest :)

TruTurns web page states the 2.25" Jet 120 slot spinner will hold up to an APC 16x10 prop.......... We shall see.

Anybody know the name of the owner?

Sounds like it is time to quit dicking around with the hired help and get the straight word. I'm not about to drop $60+ for a spinner set-up on a "he said/she said" deal.

Give me a name; I'll call him.

Well
I got the Jet 2.25 120 slot spinner in today. Not a happy camper! The APC 15x6 will not fit, close, but I don't want to try and force it. A 14x4W will fit. What really ticks me off is Tru Turns web site states this spinner with the 120 slot will fit up to an APC 16x10.........not!!!!!! Has anyone ever had much dealing with these folks at Tru Turn. Think they will make good of this spinner and re-cut it to fit the 15x6 without the recharging me. I'm not very happy to have to drop another $10-15 dollars for this darn thing that should of worked the first time. Thanks for any input on this matter.

Regards,
EdMan

I've got a 2 1/4" Jet spinner and a Pro Zinger 15x6 is just too tight. Don't even think about using an APC 16x4W, it won't even start to go into the cone slots. I'm sending mine in to get it custom cut, $10 for that.

Your Jet 120 will fit an APC 16x10. The reason why is that the lower pitched props have wider bases coming from the center point. The higher pitched props have that sharp initial twist and they are actually narrower than the 16x4. Make sense? Truturn told me that if a prop has a pitch of 4-8 then it is considered a wide prop.

I feel their web page is very misleading stating the spinner will hold up to an 16x10 in the 120 slot. This statement would lead one to believe anything under/smaller than a 16x10 would fit, am I right........... Well, I will have to give Tru Turn a call.
I have a 2.5" standard Tru Turn with an 120 slot, and it fits a APC 15x6 just fine.

Thanks,

I agree 100% that their info is misleading. What kind of plane did you plan to put the 2 1/4 inch spinner on? If it is a UCD like mine, did you try your 2 1/2" standard 120 on it? I'm wondering what it looks like.

The spinner is going on a Razzle, which comes with a 2.25" plastic spinner. Right now I have a 2.5" 120 slotted Tru Turn on there that I temporally robbed off my Extra. It does look alittle big, thats why when I decided to order another Tru Turn, and went with the 2.25 120 Jet. Heck, the 120 slot on the 2.5" fit the 15x6, didn't think it would be a problem on the 2.25"w/ 120 slot!!!! I guess it's time to give Tru Turn a call.

When I called them the other day the quote I got for a modified 2.25" Jett was $41.45. $63.90 with adaptor. I can't believe these things can get so expensive.

Have you looked into just getting a truturn prop hub http://www.truturn.com/cgi-bin/store...exact_match=on ?

Sort of a compromise, but at least there wouldn't be any issues with prop size.

The 2.25" Jet is on its way back to Tru Turn. Rick at Tru Turn was very pleasent to deal with. I told him two of my 2.5" 120 slot fit the APC 15x6, and he was suprised. He said the 120 slot is more for higher pitched props, not the "Wide" 4-6 pitched props. He also mentioned sense the lower pitched props were becoming more popular, they are looking at making a cut for these props. Kind of like the 120 sloted, but for wide blades.

I have the TruTurn 2.25" spinner on my YS91FZ. I have used both the APC 15x6 and the APC 16x6 in it. You have to cut the slots bigger but otherwise it is working fine. I used a dremel tool with a cutoff wheel to enlarge the slots. The two nuts come close to the end of the spinner but its working fine (I can't remember, but I may be using the Dave Brown spinner adapter - one of them is shorter than the other) I have lots of flights on it now. I have also used it with an APC 16x8 propellor (temporarily had a YS120 on the plane) which is why the cutouts are a little bigger than needed.

Why don't you guys use a DB Vortec spinner? They look as good as as TT,and they are cheaper and will cut it to fit any prop you like when you order it.They used to do it for free, but I think they charge like five dollars or so now.I have been using them for years on everything up to 35%'ers with great results.

I wondered about the Dave Brown Vortec spinners when I saw them on Tower's website the other day, but hadn't heard anyone mention them.

Also, what adapter nut do you use for the Dave Brown spinners? The only ones I see listed are single nut units. I'd like to use a jam nut on my Saito.

<<...DB Vortech spinner...>>

I bought one. Should have opened the package first. It is heavy, sloppily machined, has a cheesy/rough finish, and is seriously out of balance.

I agree that the TruTurns are getting ridiculous in cost, but you do get a quality product. That DB spinner in my junk box would make a good door stop, but that's about it.

My UCD finally made it to the LHS; I'm going to call TruTurn this morning. If they say the 16x4W APC is too wide, I'll just do what I did on my Kangke CAP 232; get a 2.5" DuBro and enlarge the cut-outs. That has been working fine.

Hey Chris. Since you do the cutting yourself have you ever had a problem with the spinner being unbalanced? Seems like it would be pretty hard to get the cutouts perfect. As far as I know there is no good way to check the balance on one of them other than to put it on the plane and check for vibration (which is an incorrect science in itself).

My 2 1/4" spinner is at Tru-turn getting the slot enlarged. I'd rather pay them to modify it, at least I know it'll be right. I trust them way more than I would myself and a Dremel! :D I'd hate to take a chance and have a badly balanced spinner, bet that would be hard on the bearings not to mention the airframe. At least I know how to balance props. Tru-turn says it's a waste of time to try and balance a spinner. Whether that's bs, don't ask me. :)

They say that the Ultimate-style spinner is the only one that will work in that size (2.25") due to the length of the adapter.

A complete set-up, with the special cut for the 16x4W, ready to install, is $63.90 shipped, like coomarlin quoted.

That's a case of fuel; think I'll just spend five bucks on a 2.5" Dubro and whittle it out.

coomarlin,

After I cut out the spinner with the Dremel, I used my Top Flight balancer. A little finish work with a small file for balancing was quick and allowed me to even out the cutouts.

I ordered one along with my UCD. Both are here, but I haven't checked the spinner to see whether its slots are large enough for the props I'll be running - much less its quality or balancing.

I'll pull it out of the box and inspect it tonight. If the quality is lacking I'll give DBProducts a call and see what they will do.

After doing a little research it turns out that the 2.25" Vortech spinner is 1.5 ounces versus 1.6 for the 2.25" truturn. So it's actaully lighter. As I mentioned before, I am a little concerned that I don't see an adapter that uses a jamnut like the trutun's do. I assume that many of you are running only 1 nut on your 4 strokes. This Saito 100 is my first 4 stroke and I keep hearing people say you should use a jam nut on larger 4's. What do you guys think?
