Which plane is better for doing 3D maneuvers - UCD or Flip 3D?
I'm thinking about getting a 3D airplane and would like to know what you guys think of these 2 designs. I know there are a lot of threads on both airplanes - too much to wade through it all.

Not only are there threads on each plane, but there are several threads exactly like the one you just posted. I suggest you force yourself to wade through it in order to make an informed decision.
I own a UCD and it's one hell of an airplane. It's bigger than the flip so you'll need a bigger engine. From what I've heard the Flip is a little wilder, but not neccessarily better. I just can't get past the looks of the flip. Looks like some feminist flung gobs of pastel colored paint all over it. If I owned a flip it would be recovered imediately :p |

Coo pretty much hit it.
Both good planes, the UCD would fall under a beginner 3D plane and the Flip would be a bit more advanced. Different size planes, UCD needs one additional servo. Both go together in a couple of nights. If you can afford to do the bigger UCD, do it. |

Hello, I have both planes. The Flip will 3-d better out of the box and is wilder, the covering looks ok in the air. The UCD is more gentle. Both planes are great.

What engine for Flip?
That's the input I was looking for - thanks. I've been a pattern flyer for about 10 years so I hope I can handle the wilder Flip. What engine is good for it? I have an O.S. 46 FX, but I also have 2 YS .61 LSRE pattern engines from my 60 pattern days. One of the guys at my field has a Flip and had to put a lot of lead in the front to balance it using a .46. I'd rather add the weight with the engine than with lead. I soft mount everything these days so maybe the .61 won't shake the Flip apart?

The YS are fantastic motors, however a heavy. You mentioned someone adding weight to the nose. It depends on the set up you want. I have been running OS 50's and adding tail weight with the battery and RX behind the canopy. I just put in a Irvine 53, last night, and will fly that combo today.
A buddy of mine has one with a 46 and a APC 12-4 prop. It flys the plane well, however not near as powerful as mine with a 50. If you want to use the motors you currently own, go with the 46 and remove the baffle from the muffler. If you need more power, from there, add and ultra thrust muffler, or just buy a new motor. The 61, I think, will not make the plane perform as you wish. I am curious of how your buddy thinks his Flip flys with all the additional nose weight. I flew one a couple of weeks ago, that felt very nose heavy, and did not like the way it flew. You get used to whatever you are flyn. |

Tony, dont tell me you've already worn the bearings out of that new OS 50 you stole...I mean won at the Pro-Bro fly-in? And I'd also really be interested in hearing how your Irvine 53 performs in the Flip. What pipe are you gonna use?
Oh...and to stay on track with the thread......Ive flown both and prefer the Flip. Its definately more 3Dable plane than the UCD. |
