Best 3D plane for DA-50
Looking for opinions on the best 3D plane for a DA-50.
Prefer an ARF, but can build if I have to. Kind of like Edges and Katanas better than Extras and like the look of Caps the least. Leonard Tyler, TX |
50 cc plane choice
I'm working on a CA models 27% Extra which is a really nice choice for this size engine. This is a kit however the flying surfaces come pre sheeted. There should be Edges available in this size however I'm not a fan of the design. Check out AeroWorks as they have a few Edges available. There are few Katanas available and all I'm aware of are in the 100 to 150 cc engine range. There is an interesting thread in the pattern forum about ZN line building a new plane designed by Sebastiano Sylvestri who introduced the Katana S to the TOC.

Check these planes out. I saw them at the Toledo show. They are very well built and have huge control surfaces for 3D. They are all ARF's. PPG paint, good hardware, etc.

Kange Lazer or either of the Dave Patricks Edge or Extra or you can wait and Carden is suppose to come out with a 29% Edge for the DA50

You will not find a better plane for the DA50...period! They are built from the ground up for a DA50 and 3D. This is the first company that actually meets their advertised weights. 14lbs with stock muffler. 16lbs with 3 blade prop and tuned cannister. 1400 sq in of wing area, vertical beyond belief, and flying characteristics that rival a 40%er. I am leaning toward the Extreme RC Edge, and their 1.20 Edge profile looks very good also.

I have the Edge prototype w Saito 100 and it's flies fantastic. I learned my 3d stuff with a Morris Knife, so most of my comparisons are to it.
First, there is no coupling, until you get incredibly slow in knife edge, even then it's minimal. You can fly down the flightline in a kind of "high alpha" knife edge, the go from knife edge right into a hover. Or get high, roll in to knife edge and do basically a knife edge harrier. Knife edge loops...easy. Rolling harriers....easy. Torque rolls....easy...the plane is large and reminds me of the UCan Do in terms of how easy it is to hover. Upright harrier...just the smallest amount of wing rock....reminds me of my Radiocraft Extra. Inverted harrier....no wing rock. Walls, parachutes, falling leafs....all easy. If you live in the Atlanta area you're welcome to come fly it. I think Chris will be at our field on April 27 and Joe Nall for a full week. Kevin |
