Weston Mini Hype 3d
Hi,
I was looking for a small IC power 3d plane and the Weston Mini Hype and Cougar 2000 have been suggested. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these planes and what enigines and props you used. Weston do their own engine but I've been told its close to illegal ie 82Db so a bit loud. I was wondering about an OS46LA as its about the same weight or the OS46AX or a four stroke. THe plane is designed for a .25-46 engine. Thanx. No-one got one? How about the OS32SX in the mini hype?
Anyone had a ripmax limbo dancer/ modeltech magic3D? Just wondered whay power set-ups you used and servo's etc. Just trying to get into 3d and it seems a bit complicated. |

hi i havent flown a mini hype but i have flown a cougar it flew with a irvine 36 standard servos and i loved it now for messing about with i have a hanger 9 tribute 36. again irvine 36 engine standard servos.
so to your question standard servos will do any make standard 3kgs torque is fine ive never had any trouble. or use jr 591's a great servo for the price. as for props you will want a larger diameter small pitch. if for sport flying you use a 10*6 on 3d use a 11*4 or 11*4.5 on my 36 i use a 10*4 and on a 46 i'd proberly go for a 12*4 or the apc 12 .25 * 3.75. the idea keep the smeed down and revs up. a throttle pipe wil help but aint necessary. hope it helps |

Have you considered 4 stroke power. Its quiter and provides good power. It also has the low end grunt for 3D:D

Thanx for the info.
I picked up a 2nd hand modeltech magic 3d (Similar to teh cougar) at a local show for £90 with an OS32SX in it will start with that and see how I go. Thanx again for the info. Prop and servo questions are always useful. A guy at our field has also just bought a magc3d with a OS56a 4stroke which cost nearer £300, so be good to compare them. |

First of all seen one of these up our club and just had to get one, at £135 they are at first impresion vastly over priced but hey what the hell got one anyway as the nice man at Weston gave me discount but not any more than I would have got at my local H/S !</p> 1. open the box and they have put some nice touches to the kit like full hardware packs a dummy cowl for ease of engine marking and even tapered controll horns, nice spats,U/C and cowl, however this is where it stops.</p> 2. the covering has baggy parts and even comming off in place but a hot iron will solve this.</p> 3. Instructions, well all ARTF kits are not great but his one takes the biscuit as there are no detailed diagrams just a photo of what it shoud be like and they are not very clear or show realy the proper detail.</p> one instruction tells you to screw in the rudder servo then glue the canopy on....derr what if you need to access the servo, you will have to destroy the canopy to get to it, oh and it realy looks good with a servo in the canopy ! NOT. Think I will be using screws on mine !</p> next is the fitting of the elevator servo, they say although it is not impossible it can be fitted in the desired cut out, well without drilling some holes to access the servo screws it is in fact impossible unless I just got the one that was not possible....along with this is the fitting of the pull pull control for the elevator, I spent 5 yes FIVE hours just trying to get the wires down the Fuz without them being tangled as there is no guides for them and it is just fiddley (BAD DESIGN)</p> The rudder is the same with absolutely no way of seeing what the hell you are doing, will have to cut the back out of the cockpit for this one !</p> 4. the fitting of the engine, they reccomend the west 36 (thier own), they claim it puts out 2.2hp, twicw the power of any other 36 and more than .5hp more than an OS 46 ! , this I find a little unbelievable but my BMW puts out almost twice the hp for a 2ltr engine than other manufacturers so I guess it is possible but that are all done with wizard electronics ect., there's no such thing in a west engine so how's it done?, I've heard lots of bad things on these engines too as to put out so much power ther is always a down side like they only last a short while, also they are over £150 (SHOCK/HORROR!) outragous for a 36 especially as it has rough casting and a poor reputation.</p> Along with this the configuration of the engine mount/layout will not allow you to put any other engine in as the clearance needed for the muffler will either hit the wing,sid, bottom unless you cut the bottom out which is what I think I will do, the engine centre line also puts the carb below the centre line of the tank in any position which is BAD practice and again is a (BAD DESIGN), also the tank is small along with the tank bay so a bigger engine (which is needed to supply enough 3D the power for a 4+ Lb model) will only have a shor run time!!!</p> I am a experience modler for over 30 years and a highly experience engineer so I think I know what I am talking about but of course I do make mistakes like any one else, however the above is true and does anyone else think the same or is it just me?</p> I'm sure when it is finnished it will look fine and fly good (I hope) but there has been a lot of people lately selling thiers for what ever reason I am not sure (please do not let it be crap !)</p> Any views on this anyone?</p> |
