throttle set up
Hi
Just a quick question on throttle set up. I have been setting up the throttle on my OS120FS I have set the EPA on the low end by having the engine running and closing the throttle till I come to a point where the idle is nice and low but still reliable. The upper travel was set by looking in to the carb and setting is so the carb is fully open. When the engine is running and at full throttle I can move the throttle stick about 3-4 clicks and it doesn’t seem to make a difference in the rpm, This was obviously done on the ground without the model moving. My question is...... To get the best resolution in throttle control do I set the upper limit to the carb or do I do it to the generated rpm ??? |
RE: throttle set up
Back your EPA down until you see a change in RPM's then go back up slowly until the RPM's max out. Just remember the higher you can get your end points the better your throttle reponse will be.
I try to get at least 100 on both sides of the EPA. I have also found that most engines RPM's max out before the barrel or the butterfly in the carb becomes 100% open. It is very close to 100% but not always at 100%. |

RE: throttle set up
Many good radios allow for setting "throttle curve", because you get a bigger change in RPMs/click in the low range, and after about 1/2 throttle you may have to use 2 or 3 clicks for the same RPM increase.
I also like fine control, so I use the very smallest servo arm, and the very outside hole on the throttle arm, whatever it takes to get 100 or better on each side. I also turn the rachet over on the throttle. This way you are not limited to a "click" and is the way helicopters are set up on throttle/collector. |
RE: throttle set up
I have set the linkage at min on servo end and max on the carb end
I have the low EPA around about 80% with a really nice low tick over and the high EPA on 100% with the carb set full open. I don’t think I could adjust the linkage any more without it binding. So now (after listening to your advice) I shall back the high EPA down till the rpm changes (using a taco of course) then back up and add another 5% on so that i definably have full throttle. I'm using a Futaba FF9 9cp so I will play with the throttle curve little to see how that makes the throttle feel. Many thanks for your advice Merlin |
