Hi all

i realise there have been a few thousand threads on the Flip 3D, but the have only recently become available here in the UK.

I do not like to use metal torque rods between the elevator halves. Has anyone used two servos at the back for the elevators and a forward rudder servo using closed loop.

My feeling is that i can use two digital midi sized servos at the back, and these would be the same weight as one high power single servo.

The rudder servo can go behind the tank ( I am using a YS63 so the tank will be well back).

How easy is it to balance the Flip, does it require more weight to the front or back to get the rearward C of G setting?

How does it handle on the "standard" control movements?

I use Irvine 53, dont use any weight, cg is about 155mm.

I use 50% dr and 20% expo, fly almost like a trainer....

The use of a pair of servos for the elevator is a good idea. It could use the tail weight anyway. You could mount the rudder servo inverted under the fuse.

Standard control movement? I donno. I want it to flip.

I want it to FLIP as well !!, but once like many thought I knew better and gave a model loads of movement!! It lasted 200 yards!!

I wanted some feed back, I plan to use the "standard" movement on low rates and double movements on high rate with 50% Expo.

The two servos I plan to use at the rear are the Hitech 5245's as these give 5.5kg on 6v at 0.12sec.

The ailerons and rudder will use the Hitech 5475 or 5925.

From what you are saying about weight, If I fit the YS up front its going to need a bit of weight at the back to get the c of g back to the 150 point. If thats the case I may use the 5925's all around as I hate adding dead weight to a plane.

Has anyone used the metal hinges supplied or have you all thrown them away?

I have a YS 63FZ, and 8231 servos/440 push rods, and had to add four ounce's up front to bring the CG to 5 3/4" from LE. I did not use the supplied hinges, I used Dubro pinned hinges and pinned them with toothpicks. This is a fun and easy plane to fly!

Where did you find the best price for the Flip 3D Sportive ? Price was something like £170 at Sandown which seemed very expensive 1) compared to US price 2) compared to any other similar size 3D capable model.

My flip was very expensive !!!!
I gave more than 170, but in norway is evrything expensive!!
But i love my flip ;)

I also have the Flip3D with a YS 63. My CG fell right at 140 when I put the battery in the front of the fuselage. The plane already is setup for the tank on the CG if you choose to go that route. I did. Why would you want to use seperate servos for the elevator halves when it is not needed. The torque rod setup works excellent and is plenty strong for all manuevers. All you are doing is adding weight and complication for no apparent need. Also if using CA hinges you might want to pin them for extra holding power.

As far as adding weight, the servos I plan to use will reduce the rear weight as the weight of the two servos is less than an equivalent single servo.

This may require the battery moving towards the rear to compensate.

I agree with you on the pins with CA hinges, I usually use cocktail sticks instead of pins.

I started the radio installation last night and the supplied throttle servo plate fits behind the tank with very little modification, all that is needed is to add some small stiffing plates under the front and rear cross bars to give the servo a good support. The plate has been additionally fixed in place with some 1/4 triangle against thew fuss, this looks good and still leaves plenty room under the rudder servo for the receiver.

What prop you using on the 63, looking through the miles of threads, there is a split between the 14 x 4w APC, a 13 x 4, or some real wild and wacky ideas?

I paid £165 for the Flip at Sandown Show, last weekend. This was cheaper than the Maddness.

I dont consider the other Fun fly 3D models of this size to be in the same league as these two.
