Looking for first pattern plane-suggestions?
I'm not an experienced pattern flyer, and I've never flown one but I have seen them fly, but a KAOS is a good beginner and intermediate pattern plane. They are still competitive even though it has been around for over 25 years. BUT, it's longivity says something, well okay, a LOT in my opinion, about how well it flies. It is availible in .40 and .60 size. If it were me, I would go with the .40 and put a .60 on it or a .60 and put a .90 on it. You can always throttle back. If you don't already use the throttle, you need to learn to fly 1/2 for level, idle for down, and full for up. It will vary a little depending on the model, you may need to fly at 1/4 or 1/3 for level, that depends on the plane and the engine. Others may dissagree, but over powering your airplane can save it. If you get in trouble, go full throttle, point the nose up and let it climb. If you don't have enough power for unlimited verticle, then someday you will loose a plane because you don't have enough power. I have ended up in more than one tree because I didn't have enough power to climb above them whem I made an OOPS.
Just my opinions, Soj |
Looking for first pattern plane-suggestions?
I have flown the 60 sized KAOS for several years. It was an OUTSTANDING pattern ship. Unfortunalty it came to an abrubt end when mother earth decided to reclaim the wood in the kit. I am currently rebuilding this plane. I also have a 40 sized KAOS and I am considering the 90 (saw the plans today). The only issue I had to overcome was to not let the speed drop too much in a turn, this is what finally caused the demise of this bird (I was teaching a new pilot and I took my attention off of the plane). This thing flew straight as an arrow and went wherever I pointed it. You could also look at a "Contender". This is another real nice flying (second) plane.

Great to hear about the Kaos. I have been looking for one, any idea where can I get one. Are there any ARF's (besides Tower) out there?
Thanks! Kevin |
Great first Pattern Planes
Depending upon your budget look at the World Models Inturder, under 200 dollars, the next plane is the Tai-Ji 60 or Zen 90. All are great first pattern Planes, If you have a grass runway go with the Intruder as it has fixed tri gear.
