Can someone tell me what is the best tape to use on the control surfaces?

I've never built anything electric so I have no idea what to get to build this thing. What would I need to get and what would be the best stuff to get for this plane. I wanna do 3d and that looks like a lot of fun.

I'll field this one boys :D Get yourself a GWS EPS 300C-D, a big ol' bundle of bluecor, 3 HS-55 servos, an Electron 6 RX or Micro 555, some foam safe CA, some Epoxy, a nice sharp razor blade or ten, some carbon fiber tubes, micro control horns/pushrods/easy connectors, a pack of 7-8 Kan 950 or 1150 cells, a charger (Triton is the best in most people's opinion), Deans connectors (just get a bulk pack of 5 or so, believe me, you will use them,) good sticky flexible tape in 2 inch and 3/4 inches (I use 3M Super Clear), some black and red wire (I forgot the designation, 22 AWG, right?). Mix with a big park for 7-8 minutes for absolute fun :D Dan

rljumps,
Everyone I know is using the 2" nylon strapping tape, both for their hinges and to keep their carbon fiber rods in place.

Ben Fly'n,
Thanks for the reply. I think I can pick some of the tape at a office supply store. Thanks for the help, I am a newbe to electrics, but not to 3D, this plane looks like a lot of fun.

Is this the right motor: GWS EPS 300C - DS/BB. Don't I need a esc too? And where is the best place to get all of this stuff?

Yup, that's the one. Check my post on page 4 almost all the way down. I list everything you need and where to get the best prices. If you follow the links you can't go wrong. Have fun, this thing is a blast!

I just use 3" wide clear packing tape and cut it into 1 1/2" wide strips. It's light and it works well.

Planning on Building one. Is the best matieral Blue Fan foam? Could I get that at Home depot?

Also if someone could post links of the gearing and Motor that is used. So I make sure its the right one. If batteries are a major thing for size and endurance please tell that too.

EDIT nevermind I found most everything on 79 post

Mr tim

Hi. I was wondering if you could post the full size 3dx plans again as the first one comes up blank. I can open the ultimate 1 page plan but for some reason i cant do this one. Much apreciated.

Av8er Tim,

Thanks for the advice on the tape. You have a GREAT design here and I can't wait to get mine finished. I am going to use the 6mm Depron for the foam. Should be here Tuesday.

Do you know if anyone has used a pull-pull setup for the rudder. Also has anyone made a landing gear that is not to heavy?

Yes, use small diameter carbon fiber tube, music wire, kevlar thread, heat shrink tubing and a good pair of pliers, as well as the GWS Pico Stick plastic parts set. I'll post some pictures once I take some :D

So if I went with the Razor RZ350, I buy the GWS EPS 300C-D, take the motor out of that and stick ther Razor in there, right?

Tim, you have 2 great flying airplanes here. I built both in the last week. I seem to like the Ultimate a little better than the 3DX. I have one quick question for you though, is there any way to eliminate the twist of the fuse ? I have about 10 flights on mine and the foam is starting to tear from the fuse twisting. Has anyone had the same problem ? Solutions ?

Scott

Put some clear 3/4" tape along the top and bottom, front and back, and any other edges on the foam. This adds a bunch of torsional rigidity, makes the edges a little more crumple resistant, and keeps the skin from delaminating.

Thanks Guys

Well I have been following all your hard and good work and now I am also going to take the plunge.
Before I get started I have two questions?

1. I know that at this scale that aerodynamics can be very forgiving but has anyone tried one with a thinnish fully symmetrical airfoil? Would the wings not be a little more ridged being thicker at the high point? Apart from the extra effort in getting them cut what would the disadvantages be?

2. How about a non-profile fuselage. Again more effort but the possible advantages apart from the looks could be that it would be stiffer and have less flex.

I hope that no one takes this the wrong way. I love what you all have done by having produced affordable, fantastic flying models. It's just that I like the look of a full fuse and if I could get the performance you are getting that would make me a very happy camper.

I know the indoor FF and micro RC guys are using an iron to heat form thin cut blue foam around wooden plugs and are getting some very light stuff.
What if we just scaled this technique up a bit for these designs?

Let me know your thoughts.

P.S. I just half an hour ago ordered my motor & gearbox, Li-polys & charger as well as speed control etc so I'm itching to get going.

Probably wouldn't fly worth a darn, the flat plate airfoil is what makes this plane fly the way it does.

I'm gonna try that, it might make a nice Edge or something, with very little wing/dimension reworking.

Congrats :D Have fun :)

BTW not sure what this is from, it is showing up just below the reply box where you grab quotes and stuff.

New 3D in my hangar

Thanks guys for the idea. I wanted to do practice some 3D without going to our club's flying field. Some time ago I have built the TINY (from Tods Models), the V-tail version. It is very nice plane, fun to fly, but it wasn't exactly 3D kind, that I wanted.
Then I felt in love with EDGE. It's my favorite plane.
I have already two of them: I have H9 Edge (1.20 size), and home made Coro-Edge (PQHOR).
I wasn't able to get fanfold foam so I used foam board from Walmart. Because of that I had to limit my wingspan to 30". It took two boards to built all surfaces and the fuselage. I used ROBART small hinges for controls and home made balsa/plastic horns.

Here is my setup:

Wingspan = 30" (LE enforced with 1/8" CF tube)
Chord = 12" (root) - 10" (tip)
Length = 30" (including rudder)
Weight = 11.5 oz
Power = GWS 300C (re-timed motor), GWS 12x6 prop, 8 x 750mAh NiMH
Radio = GWS receiver, 3 servos BMS-371 (Blue Bird from Balsa Products)

Flying:
I have tested this bird this morning. The plane is very stable but is not kind of hands free flying. GWS 300C gives enough power to get away from any trouble (unlimited vertical). My CG is 4.25" behind the LE and I think it is tail heavy (it just drops the tail on low throttle). Calculated CG is about 37% MAC which is very aggressive, but still controllable. Despite of that it is still very stable (long fuselage). I don't know how long it can fly, because after a couple of minutes of wild ride (trying to figure it out, why it points the nose up when slows down) I landed it with my knees still shaking.

I'm sorry, no picture this time, but I will post it as soon as I make one. But first I need to paint it (it's still all white) with my favorite blue/yellow and red scheme.

Well, you are in luck Rysium. Right now I am designing a fully 3D Edge 540. It will be in both full airplane and profile versions. I have no idea when they will be ready to sell, but right now they are my number one goal. Dan

Hi
Does anybody know the title of the music on the 3DX video as I would like to add it to my own flying videos.

Many Thanks for your help.

Li-Po batteries - 2 or 3 cell pack?

I know some of you are running Li-Po batteries with your Brushless setups but is anyone running them with the GWS motor/gearbox? If so how many?. I have a E-Tech 2 cell 1200 pack but think it might be a little low on the voltage. Whereas a 3 cell pack might be a little high. What do you think?

Cheers, Katipo
