Midwest Extra 3D vid part 2
Well, I have about 30 flights on it now, and am having a lot of fun with it! Even though the design is a bit older than the current 80" Extras, I am very pleased with how this design can perform the modern 3D moves with its relatively small elevators. I'm also very pleased with how it performs precision maneuvers. While I'm competing in the Intermediate class now, I have taken this plane through the Advanced sequence a couple times and it handles it with ease. The plane was built totally stock with the exception of double beveled rudder and elevators. Weight is estimated at 16 pounds.
At the IMAC event last weekend I let a more capable pilot (who was flying a borrowed 29% Aeroworks Edge in Advanced) fly it after the competition and he was very impressed with it. He said it snapped much better than the Edge, and he was performing some awesome moves with it including a climbing inverted flat spin, rolling Elevator to Torque Roll, sequence maneuvers, and other fun stuff. I'm still working on decent rolling harriers, but in this vid you can see the plane do some Blenders, Waterfalls, Harriers, Torque Rolling, Super Snaps, and a couple other maneuvers. For an 80" plane I'm very happy! Hope you like the vid, I'm no TOC pilot but it is a fun plane to fly! If you are building one, it is worth it! Here's my setup: Midwest Extra 300XS, airfoil tail Engine: Brison 3.2, Zinger 22x8 Servos: JR 4131 on ailerons and elevators, 4721 on rudder, Futaba 9404 on throttle Radio: Futaba 9C, 149DP receiver http://www.rcsites.net/flyfalcons/RyansMWExtra.wmv More info on this plane here Thanks to JohnVH for taking and editing the vid!! |

Nice video...

Yes, that was some nice flying. I like the multiple blenders thrown in on the single down line. Sounds good too! ;)

The blenders, that is his patented triple blender latte!!;) I think that day he actually did a 4 blender latte, but I missed that one.
Hehe, I had to edit some stuff out of it too, he is really nailing the hovering lately!! Its awesome having someone that knows how to do all that stuff so I can copy them;) The plane/engine combo is a rocket, the vid is OK, but you can really see it in person. |

nice vid!!!! Does anybody knows who makes a good quality foam wing for this plane?? i crashed mine a couple of weeks ago and need a new one
thanks Alex |
Midwest Extra 3D vid part 2
Alex, try Dick Hanson. He might have foam cores for this plane.

Very nice flying. And a gorgeous plane as well. I would have never thought it would do alot of 3d stuff with the small elevators. You must have a ton of throw in them.
One tip I can offer on the videotaping. Focus in on a fixed object (not a tree) in the distance with the camera zoomed in all the way, and then turn your autofocus off. It will keep the plane in focus about 95% of the time, without the autofocus trying to readjust. Works for both digital cameras and analog cameras. Give it a shot next time out and see if it works for you. Steve |

Steve, that is exactly what I did, except with the plane itself. once it was in the air, I focused on the plane, then put it on manual.
Then the plane comes close and have to redo it, then it gets far away and had to do it again.... |

Throw is only 30-35 degrees on the elevators; I'd love to see what it can do if I got the extra long H9 arms on my servos. The plane isn't really tail heavy for normal sequence flying, which makes me think that maybe this design just has particularly powerful elevators. Throws for normal flying are quite small.

OK John, I sometimes have the same problem with the cameras we use to tape with. They just seem to have a mind of their own.
Those are extremely effective. Who said you have to have a brand new 3d plane to fly it. hehe. |

havent downloaded it yet but damn it sounds gorgeous!

Hey, don't get your hopes too high, I'm happy to have the plane in one piece :p
No more hovering for a little while now, I was hovering today when I noticed a change in the engine sound and performance. I landed the plane, thinking the muffler bolts had come out. Turns out the muffler split in two, right around where it mounts to the engine. It'll be going back tomorrow :( |

i've got a midwest extra 300 but i'm putting a moki 2.1 in it. Whats every one think about that? I'd like to have some oppinions
|
Midwest Extra 3D vid part 2
It should have good power. I've seen one go with a 2.1 and it performed quite well. Pull out from hover will be a little slow, but it should keep its speed in vertical maneuvers. Definitely mount your rudder servo in the belly section with this engine.
