I just noticed the Vectorflight Edge 540 mentioned here, and cant believe the price!

I have a Saito 100 waiting for a good home.

What's the quality like, and how do they fly?

Thanks

If it is anything like their Extras, it will be fantastic! Their quality is better than most and they are very well built. Their smaller 300S has been my favorite 60 size airplane for at least a couple of years now after trying almost every other similar 300S. And the prices are unbelievable! I think I will be ordering their Edge soon.

That's good to hear, and thanks for replying.

Good luck, if you buy the Edge.

I'll keep posting here with the results of my order.

Dave,

I ordered my plane on Wednesday the 28th. I can't wait to get it. If the Ailerons aren't big enough I think I might make the ailerons bigger and also the elevator. I am going to set this plane up for extreme 3d, besides its only a $149.00.

Hi Brian,

Do you know if the control surfaces are already installed, and what sort of hinges they use?

Ever since my Giles threw an elevator (broken CA hinges, as opposed to them pulling out, which I have never heard of before!) I have fitted Robart hinges on everything. If you make sure the holes are centered properly, and apply Vaseline to the hinge points, they are extremely easy to fit, and are very strong.

From what I hear, $149 is an extremely good price for the quality!

Good luck with yours!

Dave,

I emailed Vector Flight today about the dimensions of the control surfaces and this is what they said.

Here are the dimensions, in inches.

Ailerons: 1 15/16 width on top. (Slightly less on bottom because of the bevel). 26 long. These were extended inboard during testing to improve rolling.

Rudder: 2 3/16 at top, 5 1/4 at bottom. Current design has counterbalanced rudder, therefore entire top of rudder moves, which has a width of 5 inches. However this design may change in future to a non counter balanced rudder.

Elevator: Inboard width 3 3/4, outboard 2 1/4.

From our testing, the airplane is very responsive, especially on elevator. However we did not design this primarily with 3 D in mind, so we can only hope you will be satisfied! The airplane seems to be suited for 3 D with a slightly longer tail moment which is suitable for larger engines. Also the wing was designed with function over form/ease concept. We did not use cardboard wing tubes because that design utilizes wing joining towards the middle of the wing thickness, whereas the stresses are concentrated at the skin. Therefore we opted to go with direct birch ply extensions of the wing spars which are connected inside the fuselage using two wing nuts.

We really hope you will like it! In any case we do look forward to your feedback.

Thank you very much for your comments about our service. We actually manufacture in Canada and USA and would like to be known as a company supporting our own economies and labor force, with excellent service and products.

Please let us know if you may have any other questions.

Kind regards,

Anyone seen their sukhoi?

hobdean 05-29-2003 09:59 PM

tv is good for 3d?

What vt model is best for 3d?
thanks

I wouldnt consider any of them 3d models. My friends own the 60 size extra they are just fun to fly around with when we don't have time to load up the big'uns.

Brian,

They look like a good company to deal with, and seem very knowledgeable.

I like the ideas they have about not being conventional and going back to basic principles.

The wing joining, for instance. They seem to have used the fact that the strength in a wing isn't in the centre, but on the skin, and are using joining members as close to the high strength points as possible.

Very clever!

Anyway, hope you enjoy yours! I should be getting mine sometime in the next few days.

Can someone tell me if they went to 2 servos for the wing or are they still useing 1?

Badge,

You can make any plane 3d it's just up to you if you want to modify things. I only payed $149 and I will modify the plane enough to make it 3d. I will add larger control surfaces if needed and any other mods that I see fit. Also I will move the CG back and I should have a pretty good 3d plane.

They told me mine will ship either Monday or Tuesday. I can't wait to see this plane. Hopefully no mods will be needed but I will not be afraid to modify this plane due to the price.

Brian,

If you are looking at enlarging the ailerons, why not consider using one of those hinges where you can remove the ailerons by sliding out the hinge wire? Then you could experiment with different size ailerons.

Just a thought!

Do they use 1 servo or have they finally gone 2 servos in the wing?

Hi Badge,

I think they have two separate wings, for ease of transporting, so I guess they must use 2 servos.

Oh ok, the older models were 1 piece and 1 servo I havent looked at them in ages but I like the looks of their sukhoi and I got an engine free for one to screw around with.

Nice looking Edge from Vector. Is is set up for pull-pull rudder? Does it use a split elevator? How does it fly on a 91 4-stroke? Thanks.

Just got mine. In a word, AWESOME! Quality, looks and finish all one of the best I have ever seen. Excellent workmanship, but that was expected as I have previously bought two of their Extras and both were a joy to assemble and fly. The wing has a strong center section, not a tube, and can be removed by opening two wing nuts inside the fuselage and sliding the wing panels out from either side. The tailplane goes on permanently. Dont like the dubro tail wheel unit that is included and going to use a low sprung one. A 91FS goes in the front, I am not going to power it for 3D. Cant wait to fly it.
