high in da sky...
I have just always used an inline fule clamp that slides easily over the carb line. You see them on helicopters all the time. Just keep it closed while filling the tank. Right before you start the motor, just undo the clamp and its ready to go. Here is the one Great Planes sells... Rick |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
My brother and I both purchased new airplanes at the same time. I bought the magic extra with the xls-52 magnum and he bought the ucando with the a tower hobbies .75. his first flight was was handed to his very experienced pilot friend. After a short take off the engine died and and the plane floated to the ground wings level. He busted a wing tip, tailwheel and rudder but easily fixed it. Anyway I was not too impressed with the construction of the ucando as much as the Extra that I have. Mostly in the covering department (granted the ucan has thicker covering) but not as well covered as the Extra. It seems that everyone at the local flying field has a Ucando and they are very impressive, but as with either of these planes, especially my Extra seem to need a little reinforcement in some areas. I have yet to fly My Extra for lack of club dues, but I have had the opportunity to see them both fly on several occasions. Either plane is very impressive in the air. However when $$ is cosidered ILL take the Extra with a good pilot. I almost wish I would have bought the Ucan just for sheer size and noticeability in the air, but too many people have the Ucan in my neighborhood. It would get ugly with 5 or 6 of them in the air at the same time. OPPS! I was flying the wrong plane?

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I'm going to buy this Friday a UCD 46.
I have not decided yet which engine to use/buy . after reviewing most of the issues In this forum I got more confused ?! could someone please advise me what to do assuming money is not an issue! |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
XENDER,
I have a Saito .72 in mine and it is reliable and powerful and not a bad price. The takeoff run is only about 10 feet before it lifts off. Unlimited vertical but not over powering. I feel it's the perfect motor for the plane. I would use the same thing again. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
brucefly, I have read a lot of opinions comparing the ucd and the magic extra, they are both very capable, comparable 3d machines. they both have their pros and cons, but one thing that I have NEVER heard concerning the magic is that the "covering is quality stuff."
I have the ucd and my friend has the magic, he hates the covering. It seems to be some low-heat stuff? Right now he is deciding on a color scheme to re-cover the plane with monokote. I love the covering job on my ucd! And the price diffence is minimal, last I checked it was around $30. and then if you buy the ucd from tower you get a $20-$30 discount. just my 2cts. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Dynodan,
thank you for your sincere response ,over powering Is something I defiantly don't wanna do. your suggesting seemed Interesting ,all tough I have to admit that the OS 70 Ultimate seems to be a little bit tempting (pump, less weight, higher rpm). anyway thanks again ,I'll bare that in mind. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
This is my first twin elevator servo plane. How did most of you set these servos up-computer mixing or a reversing Y harness?
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
reversing Y harness works fine for me
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I use reversing Y on mine. But make sure you do not use it on the wings. Use a spoileron setting and you will be able to Harrier it all day.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Great advice, guys! Thanks!
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
xender,
The plane was designed around the O.S. 70, I'd say you can't go wrong with that either. A pump would be nice. All of my 2 strokes are O.S. Very good running. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I just thought Id let everyone know my fixed ucd flew on sunday well, It flew great except the gear broke off on second landing and cracked the fuse to the fire wall then up and around the fire wall so we broke out the epoxy at the field and did a quick fix for the day and lasted another two flight when I stripped an aileron servo so I landed and went home. all in all not great day but days have been worse. right now I am in the proces of fiberglassing the landing gear block and the fire wall so this wont happen again. but i was wondering do you guys think I should paint the fiberglass or cover over it or just leave it be? thanks

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I glassed the (replaced) landing gear plate and covered it over with white Ultracote. It looks fine and has held up for a few weeks now.
I also used a reversing harness to connect the two elevator servos, but the electronics in the unit was surprisingly sensitive to temperature, causing a 1/4 inch mismatch in the elevator halves when taken from my cool basement to the warm field. I opened up one of the servos and rewired it for reverse operation. It wasn't easy! Now they track perfectly at all temperatures. I wish the servo makers would put in a jumper for direction reversal. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
High in da sky,
do you land on a rough field? |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
not really but you never know it could of hit some sort of rut or something but oh well its fixed and now its even stronger
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
i ripped mine out twice, both times I ran off the end of the runway and hit some dirt mounds (throttle trim was too high and it just wouldn't come down!) I did a field repair with thick CA which has proven to be quite strong. I have about 8 flights on the gear since the last repair and its still sturdy. I'll just fly it till it breaks again.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hi all,
I flew my U can do on sunday. Sunday was not a good day. I flew the airplane a couple of times and it flew just fine. When i flew it last, one of my clevises on the control arm of the elevator came off. I saw the plane start shaking up and down very hard and I cut the throttle as fast as i could. The plane continued to go down. It looked like the plane slowed down to about 20 MPH and the hit. When my dad and i went to get it. We found the plane broken in several places. The plane ripped the piece of wood that holds the wing down right out. We also saw that the fuse cracked in half. And the landing gear went threw the wing. My dad and i are going to try to fix it the best we can and hope it will hold together. I had metal clevises on the control rods, but didn't put the little spring in the clevis. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Sorry about your crash. You should have been able to land with one elevator still attached and working, please don't tell me you connected the elevators together and ran 1 servo. I flew mine once with one of the elvators dangling after the hinges came off and it was no problem to get in.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Airplane bow what time did you fly on sunday. I was at pratt by 11 and I saw no other u can dos so I figured you didnt come. un less you crashed before I got there because I saw someone in the weeds on left side of the field when I got there. that might of been you. sorry to hear about your crash but that will remind you always have a clevice retainer. I lost my elevetor clevice on my magic but meraclessly I got it on the ground with absolutely no damage but quite a scare all because it was the one clevice without a retainer.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
My dad and I got to the field at about 11:00. We fly at Ned Brown woods. When i tried to land, i had the radio on low rate and i should have switched it to high rate. i think that if i did that, i could have landed it. I will always put a clevis retainer on the clevis from now on. I had two servo's controling the elevator and on of the clevises came off. If i had just switched it, it might have been fine. In the beginning of the year, i had a spectrum. I was doing a low pass, and i lost the elevator. The plane flew into the ground at about 120 MPH. I was flying at full throttle and the elevator blew off and i had almost 0 control. Well, this hasn't been a perfect year for me. Right now my dad and i are fixing up my U can do. Hope to have it done in another week.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
aiplane boy I thought you said you fly at Pratt Wayne woods?? ow well what ever.
I too love doing low full throttle passes but this one time I decided to do a few inverted and the tail touched and I got spooked and pulled up(oops!!) well fixed that sucker up and flew it the next week only to crash again due to a loss of reciever crystal. after that I got into 3d and kinda forgot how to fly super fast and have had much more fun flying 3d. if you are interested in any older 3d planes to keep you hoverin till you fix the ucd give me a pm im sure I got something that will suit your tastes |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I noticed a little while ago that dylwad put his own scheme on his UCANDO. Has anyone else done this? If so, let's get some pics up! I really liked the see through monokote giving a great look at the skeleton. I'm in the process of recovering mine so I'll post some pics when I'm done.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey all,
Try routing the fuel line out of the center hole in the firewall, up over the engine mount, then down to the carb. As long as the fuel line is higher than the center of the tank, it will not gravity feed. Refuel valve location is moot. Worked for me! Richard |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I'm looking to trade my UCANDO .46 for a Goldberg Extreme 330 or a Morris the Knife, any takers?

I'm looking to trade my UCANDO .46 for a Goldberg Extreme 330 or a Morris the Knife, any takers? |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I really need something I can beat up more! and that is a little lighter.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Lighter then a UCANDO? Inch for inch it doesn't get any lighter.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
That's true, the wing loading is hard to beat, but I believe that a profile has more durability. If you crash a UCANDO on the deck, you will for sure be putting the gear in again, and hopefully it won't break in half.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I've crashed 5 UCANDO's this year. Only 1 was not fixable.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I just got my kit last night and was looking through it all and found that the wheels are way too big to fit in the wheel pants. What size wheels are you guys getting in the kits? These look to be at least 3" wheels. If I hold them up to the pants and line up the axle holes, they stick up above the top of the pant by at least 1/8".
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
YIKES! Sounds like they sent you the wrong wheels, are they rubber or foam?
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Advice for anyone ... even the wheel guy. Re-enforce the landing gear!!!!! Especially if you are using wheel pants and grass. They will pop off!
I also fiberglassed the backplate that holds the wing dowel on also. You NEED to do this! I am on #3 46 UCANDO and I lost my landing gear on everyone. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
there was a post a while back about using nylon bolts for the landing gear. That way, it would shear the bolts off and not rip out the block holding the gear in, then just keep a stock of ny-bolts and replace as neccessary. Pretty good idea.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Just e-mailed GP about it and they're going to get me a new set of wheels. The e-mail they sent back said the wheels should be 1"???? That seems TOO small. I was figuring around 2"- 2 1/4" or so.
Anyone here flying one of these with a YS .63? I'm trying to decide onm an engine. I want something a tad mre powerful than the OS mentioned in the manual, but I don't know if I want to go all the way up to the Saito 91. Just seems too big. I'd be worried about vibration. I know the weight wouldn't be a problem, but how does the 91 fit in the cowl? Does anyone have pics of their installation? |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
One inch wheels????
The 46 UCD should come with 2 1/4 inch foam wheels. Better email GP back and correct their mistake. Rick |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Saito .72, hovers at 3/4 with more than enough power to pull out.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
running the ys .63 in mine and I love it! although I haven't had any time lately to fly because of school, but when I do it has all sorts of power.
|

Lets just say now that I have fiberglassed & epoxy'd the landing gear and the wall that holds the single wing bolt, it will be the last thing to break on this plane. It needs to be done. If anyone wants to see a pic of how I did it let me know. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hi guy's, I just bought a saito 72 to my UCD 46 and I am not sure which fuel to use, this is my first 4 stroke engine. according to the manual I need 10% to 15% nitro & 20% oil. can I use less percentage of oil saying 12% oil (most of it synthetic) and 15% nitro?! which fuel is more recommended: wildcat 10% nitro & 18% oil OR byron 15% nitro & 16% oil(synthetic & Castor) |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Most people that I know who fly with Saitos including myself use 20/20. All synthetic or castor/synthetic mix. Don't go less on oil. Stay above 15%!!!
If you find an all synthetic 16%-18% oil you can add 1-2 ounces of castor to get to 20%. Either way you should keep a 1/2 gallon bottle of castor oil on hand. It's good to have. 15-20% Nitro is good for any Saito. I don't think I would run 10%. I also know several people that run 30% heli ... but I think that is just a waste of money for this plane. It doesn't take that much power. Maybe if you were flying a prop jet or something that you wanted to kick the RPM as high as possible. |
