:)Northwing...Tinting your own canopy is a challenge. It's not normally something one ought to try at home. Same kind of deal as sewing your own props. Not recommended.

But if you really want to do it...Take a carefully made mixture of paint. I noramally use black, but sometimes silver, red or whatever. Then will no preperation whatsoever...I paint the canopy. If you paint it on the outside it looks like crap. So......I paint it on the inside. Runs don't matter, use can use a brush or broom or your finger. Anything works. I've even done it with an old rag. Just apply the paint. When you look at it from the outside it looks like a professional did it. If I use a light color like silver or red or light blue, I'll apply the base color and then spray a darker color (black) over it. It gives it even more depth. Pretty cool.

The other thing I like about painted canopy is you can hide stuff under there!?!?!??!!?

Thanks

Barry how did u tint that canopy?. Looks great.

Northwing
Northwing, Here's a couple of pics of one that I painted just like Barry mentioned. I tried to tint one from some info I got on RCU but it isn't worth the hassle and I found it to be quite difficult to get a worthwile canopy out of it. It took me three tries at tinting (that was buying 3 canopies) to get one that looked like it worked and in no time at all it cracked.

Uhhhhhh.... Okay, I have to admit. I haven't thought that far ahead. [:o] I'll think of something. I'll tell her it was a door prize or something. Or maybe, "I was driving down the road behind a UPS truck and it fell out and I tried to catch up with the guy but you know how much of a hurry they are in to finish they're route." Something like that. Hey, it could happen...... right?

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Your canopy looked transparent in the photo. I thought you tinted it. I have tinted canopys many years ago (1960s) by putting Rit dye in warm water and letting the canopy sit overnite. The problem with that is there is a fine point on how hot or warm you make the water. Too cold and it won't tint no matter how long the canopy sits in the water. Too hot and the canopy warps. I have ruined many canopys trying this. Once in a while it comes out just right. I thought you had a more sure way to success. I have painted the inside of canopys for years. Your right, they do come out looking good. Even if your not a good painter.

Barry, Maybe CeeGee can hide his receipts under there! I have to laugh, we are all doing the same thing to hide our addiction, it's getting harder to hide boxes you could stuff bodies in around the house! We should share tips and tricks.

:)Northwing...If you want to just tint the canopy...There is a paint for that. I got mine from Tower Hobbies. You paint it just like you would regular paint only when it dries you can see through it. I've done a couple of my planes that way. Easy to do. The paint is called "windshield tint" and it comes in a spray can. Pretty slick the way it works.

Thanks

:)Northwing...I just looked on the Tower website. The stuff I use is made by Pactra. Their part # is LXCY44. Sells for $4.29 a can.

I've used that stuff. It works good. You just keep adding coats until it's the darkness you want. Easy and quick. Be sure and paint on the inside.

Thanks

Barry,

I use the Pactra too, I noticed you need to let it dry thoroughly, it gets darker fast. I spent countless hours detailing the cockpit of my G202, then tinted the canopy til you can barely see through it.....haven't had the time to order a new canopy.

Hi People:)..... Forgot what the site looks like.... Been on the "other" site so
much.... Man I could strangle the son-in-law for showing me the site...

While because on some conflicts(1/4 scale fly-in at the NV. lake bed, and
Lake Havasue float fly) our funfly was moved to the last weekend... And
all the members said they did it for me, so I can finish the "Do" or one of
them.. profile, Yak, S.T..... Funny guy's I tell you.... Anyway I did find time
to get off the poker site.....( I'm hooked) And I did some(very little.. But
progress) and installed the tank... I'm just piecing the broken pieces back
in and bracing, it should be strong enough to hold the S-100... hopefully it'll
look 1/32 as good as Barry's..... But the glue has to dry... So back too...

Gary....... Yeah... now you can use the S-125a on the Do 46......

CeeGee... tell her you bought that nice house for her, and it'll take a lot of
RC stuff toooooooooooooooo........................

B Good People....

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:)raideron...Glad you're started on the UCD. Looks great so far. Get 'r done. You'll be gald you did.

Flew my repaired Do today. What a riot. Had a great time. Only fly it twice and I must have my vert tube set wrong because I couldn't get all the fuel in the tank. It just leaked out the exhaust. Back to work. I'll figure it out tonight.

Anyways, I couldn't tell if from when it was new. I had just a wee bit of trimming to do and it flew fine. I found myself maybe wanting a bit more "bite" on the prop. Tomorrow I may try a 14x6 and see if it'll pull that. But, today I had a great time. Man, just like that, I was able to hover this thing. I basically could hover it as long as I wanted. I'm not sure why except maybe I've been hovering planes that are harder to hover and when I come back to this sweetheart it was just soooooooo easy. What a joy. Also, the wings seemed to "drum" more than I remembered. But I soon got used to that. My landings, including several touch and goes, were very easy even with the CG a little bit further back. The thing flew like a dream. I couldn't get the best flat spins so I'm working out the trim on that. I only got two flights and my last spins were much better but not totally flat so I've got a little work to do on that.

All in all I'm very satisfied for my first flights back. Glad to be "Doing my thing" again. I had been away too long.

Thanks
Barry

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Hey Spud. Thanks for stopping in. How are you doing over there?

Gary, That's an excellant idea. I was thinking that what I can do is to order the lamp and when it gets here I can put it in the Sig Mayhem box and put a shipping label on the box with my wifes name on it and leave it on the front porch. That way when she opens the box the leg lamp will be inside........ [X(] Kind of a curve ball so she won't suspect that I bought a new airplane and she gets a new leg lamp from "Fra gee lee" Huh! Huh! [X(] It could work, couldn't it......? [8D]

Ron, it looks like the repairs are coming along. Awesome!!

Barry, glad you got to fly the UCD again. Sounds like it felt pretty good to get it back into the air. I flew mine yesterday for the first time in a while. It was neat but I seem to fly my Katana profile better. I just need to learn to do other aerobatics better with the UCD.

Barry, I forgot to mention. I opened the Mayhem box. Holy cow!! [X(] I can see why they cost a little more than other planes. Man that kit's got some really nice hardware and it looks to be very top quality. [X(]

Also I've been having problems with my left shoulder. It's been acting up for about 3 months now. I am scheduled for an MRI next Friday. My doctor was hinting at surgery........[X(] Arrrgghhhhh..... :( I guess if that happens I'll have to do some kit building.

man Barry you shure hid those stitches realll well on that fuse, props arent your only forte, glad for ya, i know how it feels to be without[:o](but i did order that VF edge:D)

Ron, just think when you beat everyone else at that addiction, youll be able to buy us all a ucd[X(]

CEEGEE, MAN THATS A GOOD THOUGHT,YOU MUST BE A REAL KANIVER, I bet you never get in trouble like me:)

Hey Spud, better board up and come out here to the desert and fly with me for the next week or so[:o]
good to hear from ya ;)

Barry Cazier 10-22-2005 11:55 PM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:)Yeah, with all the stiching I do I should have been a doctor. But, then again, maybe I wouldn't have the time to fly.

CeeGee...Ya, the Mayhem is impressive. A lot of plane for the money. I used all the stock hardware and was very pleased. I didn't use the pull/pull rudder though and moved the rudder servo to the tail and made a carbon fiber rod for that. Oh and I changed the axles. Apparently, I'm the only person on the face of the planet that had one fail. But I did, on the 5th flight the axle broke and the wheel fell off. Made for an interesting landing. But as slow as this plane lands I just harriered in and let it plop down. No damage. None. Didn't even kill the engine. You will not believe how slow the Mayhem will fly. It makes the UCD seem fast. And it's the best flat spinning plane on the market. The best. Kinda like a bid Twist only better.

Flew my 46 5 times today. The weather was unseasonalbly good. 68 degrees and if there was any wind I couldn't even tell from which direction. Had a ball. Just sorry I had to quit. I got the thing trimmed out pretty good and the flat spins are coming back. And my hovers are real decent now. Basically I can hover this plane as long as I want. Got some great waterfalls today. And I had a low (at least for me, I'm no gjeffers) 15' inverted pass. This plane flys absolutely neutural for me. No stick inverted or upright. Seems the waterfalls are better on the repaired 46 and the flat spins a little worse. But I'm adding spoilerons to get the spins flatter and pinwheel like. After what I've been flying all summer, this is a ball. Very relaxing and inspiring. I really enjoy these planes. I really do. My jaw hurts from grinning all day.

Well, talk with you guys later.

Thanks
Barry

Yeah Gary. I guess I can do my share of scheeming. (somehow that word doesn't look right) Oh well. I have become my wife's oldest kid........[X(]

Barry, Yes the Mayhem looks real sweet, that's for sure. It's amazing the hardware that comes with it. WoW! I heard that there is a Saito 125 coming out. Not sure when but here's the link and pic. Maybe that could be the ticket for the Mayhem. I think it's a bored out 100.......[X(][link]http://www.horizonhobby.com/Shop/ByCategory/Product/Default.aspx?ProdID=SAIE125A[/link]

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:)CeeGee...I saw that engine on Horizon Website. I think it is a direct competitor to the YS110. When they are available I'm going to get one. Horizon says they'll be here late December. That's not too far off really. It will probably be the perfect engine for the UCD60 and the Mayhem. If you can wait that long, that's the engine I'd try in your Mayhem. Looks like it's the same mounting holes as the 100. You could run it with your 100 now and then upgrade later with hardly any trouble. That's what I did with my UCD60. I flew it for almost a year with the Saito 100 and then overnight upgraded to the YS110. The only change I had to make was the throttle linkage, and that was minor. The engine mount was an exact fit. It will be the same with this 125 Saito.

I flew my UCD46 yesterday at noon for 3 flights. Man, the weather here has been great. High 60 maybe low 70 and not a breath of wind. Unbelieveable. Anyway, flying was spectacular. I really enjoy the small Do. I got the flat spins going yesterday. I knew I'd get them going again. Couldn't quite get a rising flat spin but it'll come. I used to do them all the time with this plane. Either my repair isn't perfect or just not flying the plane for a few months, but something has changed that has made the spins harder. But the first 7 flights I couldn't get a flat spin even going. I just kept trying and got them going great yesterday. So maybe just stick time will get me the illusive "rising flat spin" going again.

The UCD, the Twist, and of course the king of flat spin, the Mayhem are the only 3 planes I've ever seen do the rising flat spin. It is a great maneuver and a real crowd pleaser. Well, if I had a crowd. I fly alone most of the time, alla gjeffers.

Anyways, great to be flying the 46 again. Having a wonderful late fall flying season, but I know it will be short lived. So I'm laying away winter projects.

I'm got the UCD60 ARF in my closet for my first winter project and I've got a Mayhem 40 on order which now has an estimated ship date of late December. Original ship date was February 2005 when I ordered the plane last January. This has got to be the king of late delivery. I'd like to get at least one more plane for winter. It's a very long winter here. I've been thinking about the Giant UCD but it seems large for me. Also been looking at a Ultra RC Quest 3D which seems like it would fit my YS110 engine profile. And I've been looking a little at the Ultra RC GilesUL which seems in the same class as the Giant UCD. Again maybe a little bit big, but????

I haven't made any decision on the winter projects yet. Do you guys have any input? What are your projects going to be? Anything?

Well have a great day.
Thanks
Barry

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Hey all,

I too got tired of waiting for a YS110 to arrive after being on order forever, long enough that I saved up the extra coin to buy a YS140, have it buckled into a Funtana 90, knowing it's way too much engine but it will do nicely in QQ Yak 54! Your right, part of this hobby is careful planning! I have seen the Giant UCD, it's a whopper, wings are 2 piece, but the fuse is like 137 feet long. I had a real eye opener recently, I am running a raffle for my club, I chose the H9 Extra 260 w/ a DA50, barely fits in my Explorer. The wings are about the same as the F90, but once again the fues is long...... I need a trailer.

I have 2 Saito's and love them, only 1 dead stick, and it's because I changed fuel without adjusting the needles. I quickly went back to Wildcat 30% Heli anyway, they just run better on it, just costs more, need to get over it and fly.

Oh yeah, winter project, build another Sig SE, this is a great plane to have in the hangar to just have fun without any hassles. BTW, your gonna end up with a lot of planes if you use ARFs for winter projects!:):D:):D

This weekend is supposed to be great here in Pittsburgh, got the whole fleet charged up and ready to go.....last December was actually a great flying month here, hoping we get another easy start to winter.

Mac

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:)The MacDaddy...I think you'll love the YS140 on the F90 (F140). I have a couple of friends that have the Funtana, one with a YS140 and the other with a Saito 180. The planes are about 10.5 pounds but they fly nice with that combo. You'll probably want to go to taller landing gear and to wires on the tail rather than the carbon fiber support. I believe you got the right engine for the plane.

Yeah, I'm starting to get a bigger hanger, but I need a few planes as fast as I get rid of them. Part of my problem is I love to try the new stuff. And the winters are long so I love to build a couple of plane to have ready for spring. 6 is my max. If I have more than that I'll have to dismantle (engine, radio gear etc) another plane. So far that hasn't happened, but it might this winter.

I flew into mid December last year. kinda cold, about 45 degress but not too bad. Then it snowed and I flew again in March.

thanks
Barry
