Ok guys.. I'm going to buy a UCD 46... This is what I plan on using: OS .70 Surpass II, Hobbico CS65 Servos and the Futaba S3010 for Throttle, an APC 14X4 Prop. I will also be using a Remote Glow igniter..... Any reason I should be changing before I buy? Thanks in advance for the info...
Personally, i really dont like hobbico servos, the quality for a 3d airplane is not there.

Definently use a micro servo for the throttle for weight savings.

Have you bought anything yet? The O.S 70 is a great running engine (i have 2) but they are heavy. My Satio 1.00 wieghs the same and puts out WAY more power. If you dont have an engine yet, buy a satio .72, they run just as good, about the same power, maybe a little more, but are almost 5oz lighter.

Go to Chief aircraft for the ucando, they got um for $119.99!!!

But your setup you got listed will work just fine.

The hobbico CS-65 servos are just relabeled hitec 605bb servos they will work fine. I use one on my rudder on my ucd 46 and it works fine. [8D]

David... Thank you very much for your insight. The FS .70 just came in the mail.. And I already went to Chief for the UCD! your right. Good Price! I did take your advice on the servos and the advice of some others. I went with Hitec's High Torque metal Gear servos. The HS645MG and the HS525BB for the throttle. I wanted to stick with Futaba but all the guys at the field told me that Hitec is the one to use. Anyway, parts keep coming in the mail. I will look forward in making this gem of a plane as soon as it comes in. I will keep you posted as I progress. Thanks to all of you guys out there, this is helping me out and im sure many others too! thanks again. copster.[8D]

Decided to buy another one as they are so much fun to fly, this time I wont land down wind and stall out, this plane will do it but it is hard to do, I just hit that magical stall speed due to a strong tale wind and a dead stick.

Update: The UCD just came in the mail... I was really stoked until I got to the wing... Yeah, you guessed it, a hole in it the size of a coke can. [:@] back to Chief aircraft... AAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! ^%$@%$

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Greetings all -

I'm getting back into the hobby after a long absence, and am really really poor (medical school!).

I've got an old OS .61FS four-stroke, and a SuperTiger G-51, and I wonder which would power the UCD better. I also just have a wimpy four-channel radio - I'll probably run a single rudder servo and join the elevators...

Anyway, with the goal being getting my thumbs back and learning some of this crazy 3D sillyness, what setup ought I to start with? I figure I'll run one of the engines I have, and upgrade the radio when I can...

Any recommendations on which I should blow the dust out of first?

Thanks.

Nathan

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Given the choice for engines, I think I'd go for the SuperTigre. You're not going to get stellar performance out of either one , but it should hold you until you can get something better. The UCD really doesn't need high-dollar servos to run. Some standard Futaba 3004s will work just fine on the elevators and even ailerons. You may want something a little more powerful on the rudder. I just picked up a couple of GWS S03T (I think) servos that are rated at 100 oz. They're slow as molasses, but they were only $10 each. I figured for that price, I'd live wih the speed. So far, they've worked out fine. If you can afford it, a 5 cell battery pack will buy you some more speed and torque from the servos, too.

Good luck...

all u need is standard servos like hitec 322hd

Took me three times to get a good wing from Tower...
In the process, I happened to get a free set of ailerons!?!?! :D

Finally got my plane in... BUT! I was dissapointed in Chief Aircraft. They, for an unknown reason, are being blocked from all Futaba and Great Plains products! When I called Chief to have another plane sent to me because of the hole in the wing when I got the original, they replied back to me stating that they have no others in stock and will no longer be able to get any more.... Hmm. wierd...

My guess is that Great Planes is pissed that Chief is selling them so cheap. They are undercutting Tower by doing so.

I wonder how long it will be before Futaba blocks ServoCity from selling Futaba products?
ServoCity http://servocity.com is currently selling 8-channel Futaba R148DF Receivers for $99.95 for two. Tower Hobbies is selling the very same receiver for $99.99 for just one. Both dealers are selling them without the crystal.

I placed a second order for two more receivers from ServoCity on Monday April 5th and they arrived on Wednesday April 7th.

I build the wing today... I think I have a problem though. The ailerons, one points up on one end, and the other points down. They do this where the ailerons meet the fuse. Any suggestions?

Turn one of the ailerons around. Refer to some picture of a completed UCADO that shows both ailerons.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Are you saying that you have warped ailerons? You can try using weights and heat to straighten them. Or, you can try to average out the error between them by using clevis adjustments then trim out any roll in the air with your transmitter aileron trim.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Guys I have a question on setting up the wing, I set up the first wing with the ailerons centered between the top and bottom of the wing, I popped a hole in that one and built another wing with the ailerons set flat with the fuse on a recommendation from a supposed 3D guru, I crashed with the wings set like that so I am hesitant in setting it up this way again, but if it's right I need to know....what have some of you guys done???????

Copster,

Just use a heat gun and straighten them out. I had a same issue.

I was jonesin' to buy a HYPE 3D arf, but after reading some of this long thread, I figured you guy's were having a lot of fun with 1/2 the price, so I got me a UCD46..............despite the all the hype from the HYPE lovers/UcanDo HATERS![X(][sm=thumbdown.gif]

I just pulled my good-and-broke-in YS 63 outa my beaten and battered Morris the Knife, which I owe (both plane and engine) to helping me learn 3d!

I've got about a dozen tail touch and goes (from hover of course) under my belt, almost as many elevator/harrier/tail touch landings, some waterfalls(as good as a Knife can do) and bunches of flat spins, knife edge, harriers etc. and consider myself decent at hovering, but not rock solid consistant yet, and even a couple inverted touch and goes. Pretty much all in one season (I love this 3d thing:D)

So........ I owe profile planes and the rcu profile forum guys for helping me get this far (thanks).;) But I'd like to give the patternesque/funfly/more realistic plane thing try.

Here's my question;

This being my second 3D capable airplane, and my 1st non-profile 3D plane..............what should I expect in flight characteristics compared to a Morris Knife? Are there any "bad habits" I've picked up flying the knife, such as being spoiled by it's forgiving super slow stall speed? In other words, how should I fly a UcanDo different from a profile?

Also, I mentioned the HYPE guys claim the UcanDo isn't too stable in harrier mode..............after reading a lot of this forum, but not all (my eyes were getting tired:() it sounds like spoilerons help. If so, what %?

I'm glad to hear that standard servo's are doin' the job. I love Futaba's due to low cost, light weight, and quality! I've got enough of the 3003's but no 3004's, and I run a five cell (6v) Nimh pack. This worked great in my Knife. Are the 3003's (non-ball bearing) good enough or do I need to spring for 3004's for the Ucando?

Any help would be awesome, thanks![sm=thumbup.gif]

I will try, but I have already had Tower Hobbies send a new wing set to me. (under warranty)
I'll let you know how it turns out.. copster:D

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Jive,

Fly the UCD slow, it is not ment to haul the bacon, a good four stroke is your best bet, I'm not saying that a 60 or better two stroke would not work but, I feel the four stroke has more low end grunt more of where your be flying. It is a very fun flying floater, very forgiving, it like to float into a head wind so keep that in mind.......

Copster,
My question is how did you set up your ailerons, to make them work on the wing, how did you center them, so they are not down to far or up to far???? When looking at them from the end of the wing.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

What a nice flying plane. I have had several 3D planes and this one is the best so far. I had a Somethin Extra (which needed something extra to fly 3D), a TT profile Extra (which was extra heavy), and a Pizzaz which I was able to hover and TR with some effort, and did wild tumbles including cartwheels. This UCD is what I wanted from the beginning though. After having had four different 2-strokes and three different 4-strokes, I have settled on the Saito .91 with Master Airscrew 14x6. This made the Pizzaz like a helicopter in the hover, and with that same engine/prop on the UCD 46, the UCD has heli-like altitude response on the throttle. With three servos in the tail the CG came out at 6inches back with no cowling. The battery is on the CG. I was able to torque roll it on the first flight. It flies so light and easy, I had to use elev/flaperon mixing on the Pizzaz to get that feeling at all. The kit went together smoothly. I used Dubro pinned hinges with epoxy and microballoons though, I'll save the CA hinges for smaller planes. The surfaces move so easily they fall down under their own weight with no servo attached. I used two Hitec 605BB's on the ailerons for a little more torque, and a hitec 5945MG for extra torque on the rudder.
I actually set a personal record for buy-to-fly time via mail order. I ordered it late Wednesday night, actually in the AM on Thursday. It was at my door at 6pm on Friday! I have the Tower membership and didn't even pay shipping, I'm amazed at 2-day delivery for free! By Monday afternoon I was able to fire up the engine and Tuesday afternoon I put it's first flight on it so I did it in 6 days. The engine mount used was from a Global Freestyle, used upside down, with 6-32 rubber well-nuts sunk into the firewall. This gave perfect clearance with the carb. These wellnuts gave a little vibration isolation. I think this will become my favorite plane, it is so relaxing to fly yet so capable for 3D maneuvers. I love flying it slow, it's at home at 15mph.

Any flying time put on the ucd .46 with the saito 1.00 or O.S. 91. I am really interested as to hear what you have to say and things to look out for. As right now I am building mine with the saito 100 up front. Let me know how they flew.
