RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Goldenclan...from the looks of the weather here in Kansas for this weekend ..might be a great flying weekend!!!! Hope you get some time on the engine!
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
How did it save you on CA hinges? Just not glues into place?
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey hockeyrules99... Well, No they were glued in place, But while
pulling on the control surface before start-up of the engine I saw one(1) and a half of the next one split right down the center on my ailerons on the wing tip side... If I went up with out my checks who knows what could have happened... It's very simple and fast to do, And as I said it WILL save you:-).... Plus at the field a fellow club member maidened a delta type wing and lost one of the rudders he landed with no problems, If he would have used the tug/pull before the flight he most likely would have found it... How do I know.. Because after he landed and on some of the CA hinged that were sticking out of the vert. stab. of the missing rudder.. I pulled on it and it came right out.... He said he CA'ed them good.... We just looked at him.. Then he said well maybe I had a senior moment, and glued one side twice... Have a Great Day Another great day at the field!!!! This UCD just floats like a foamy, Man, it is easy to fly!! I love it.... Now using a 14X4W and P.M. 20/ 20 on the YS-63... She purrs like a kitten and my 8oz tanks is lasting longer, I'm hardly ever above half throttle... And I think the name is right(UCD).... I think I can do... At least so far of using about two gals. But you know what they say.. It can get you in trouble.... I can't wait for the Yak:-))))))))) It's a day or so away:))) |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
hey guys, was wondering if the tank was as easy on the 46 as it was on the 60 to put over cg? i have a 60 but my son is getting a 46 and was asking questions about this.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I'm new to the UCD, But from what I see No way to do it, there's
just no room, unless you blacken the canopy and use that space too??? and move the onboard gear around... Since I am running a YS-63 and I had to replace the tank, I was thinking about that, But I'm too green at this, and wanted to fly, So the tank went right back where it came from... |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
i agreee with raideron about the tank placement. There are some tanks out there that are very pliable when you heat them with a heat gun. I just put the tank in the recomened spot with a magnum 70rfs, put the receiver as far forward and placed the batt in the spot infront of the servo tray. After the first flight I moved the batt up to the receiver and that put the cg right at the 4 1/4 to 4 1/2 mark.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)goldenclan, Don't worry too much about the CG on the UCD46. The factory offered an addemdum to the manual which states you can balance the plane anywhere between 4 and 6 inches from the leading edge and still fly fine. I run mine about 5 3/4" It makes it 3D a little bit better but is still ridiculously easy to land. Such a fun, fun plane. Anyways, I wouldn't bother trying to move too much stuff around. If you are in that range you are good. Has a longer CG tolerance than any plane I've seen.
Thanks, Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
With my rude check of the CG, I thought I was at 6"maybe a hair
more from the LE, But not sure now since goldenclan's onboard set-up sounds to be as mine is in post 1271... I do need a little down to help her get down, and inverted flight just take lite touches of the stick every now and then at mid throttle setting and on full throttle she will climb.. Anyway what the heck.. I like it:-) |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
It is a fun plane to fly. If mine crashed I would surely buy another. I'm even thinking about selling my 4*40 since I never fly it. The 4* only has about 8 flights on it. I have an Ultra Stick also and between it and the UCD I don't get the 4* into the air. The UCD is the funnest plane I've ever flown.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Do yall have any hints or ideas for mixing, elevons, expo, etc. for the U can do? What have some of yall done that has been successful?
FYI, My U can do is the Official Base Drum of the field. Thanks for the help, Daniel |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
The ucando has to be one of the most forgiving plane I have flown. I had a trainer that had stall habbits worse than the ucando! So far all of the landing roll outs have been less than 5 to 7 feet with one that just stopped and set down on the ground! As for mixing, I have used the flaperons and set up just to give a bit of flaps and it will crawl in flight and just hang around in some wind. I have not tried any eleverons or the such or any coupling. Still getting used to it, but I do something new each flight. Hey anybody want to trade something for a thunder tiger raptor 30?
I used 30% expo in all the control surfaces! |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
mix flaperons/spoilerons to a slider or variable control on your radio if you have one. I run fairly extreme settings, the flaps/spoilerons are at max travel of the servo, so full down flaps will only use one servo for aileron inputs.
I've also tried mixing elevator halves to aileron, that almost cost me a plane! I suddenly acted like it was extremely tail heavy in turns. the tail would dip and it would bleed off airspeed, stalling it every time, even when in normal speed flight. other then that, some people mix rudder to elevator to correct KE coupling. if you have variable flaps you can accomplish this to some degree already, so I've never found that mix to be of much use. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey DPRC, I'm no expert, But I do have about 60% expo on both
the elev and ail. I have dual rates set at 60 and 100% But I fly on high rates only except when practicing rolling circles and attempting rolling harriers. My throws are set for everything I can get including my radio... The only mix I use now is rudder-> elevator about 4% and rudder->ail at about 50%(still adusting) for K.E.s... I also use spoilerons for harriers which is set on my flap switch... |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
That is all good stuff. I really appreciate it. I'm just starting to be able to hover and want to set my plane up to do the other cool things that the plane can do. I know the plane can do some good stuff, it's just the pilot keeping it from happening. Anythin else you got as far as hints would be great.
Thanks, Daniel |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Just have a ball with it, and keep it a few mistakes high when you try some thing new! Just remember, if you get into trouble and a few mistakes high, release the sticks, see whats happening, then correct. Staying up high dosen't look great, but when you are learning new moves, it can save your plane! Just watch out for the infamous figure 9.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey Daniel... All I can say is Practice..Practice and more practice:-)
That's about the only real thing that helped me... As I said I went thru 2 gals. of fuel within the last week.. I did stay home today:-(.. I had to make ado with the boss since my purchase of the Yak... I'm by no means good, Altho I can hover the UCD at will.. Still a bit of the shaky thumbs when I get down to 5' and below... Main thing I can say is just go with the flow, small moves.. find the "sweet spot" and when the thumbs start to act funny try something else for the moment that you can do better, Then get right back doing what was a little harder But start higher becasus its eaiser, If anything because you have more thrust to work with, And the height will remove the ground effect that works on you brain/thumbs which is not good for the plane:) |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
What is knife edge coupling? I've seen it on the threads here but not sure what it means. THanks
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey CeeGee.. It's where you go in to a Knife Edge and while applying
the rudder in the K.E. the plane either pulls to the belly or canopy so you need to apply some elev also to correct for this, Or you can "mix" it on your computer radio... (Rudder(master).. to Elev...(Slave)) That way all you have to do is activate a switch when doing a K.E. and both surfaces move with just the rudder input.... Same with the Aileron if the plane also rolls with the rudder input... Both are set by the same switch on my radio... I.E. I have 4% Rudder to Elev. and About 50% rudder to ail.. on my UCD... I activate the switch and when I use the rudder the other two surfaces move along with it... Sorry about that... I have 3* R-E & 25% R-A....:-) I'm still playing with the settings... |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
TWO gallons of fuel in the last week??? I WANT TO LIVE IN AZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!lol
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)I thought "Knife Edge Coupling" was a 3D stunt. I was getting pretty good at it and now you tell me to program it out. Dang!! Snow, GAG!!!
Thanks, Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
hockeyrules99... You wouldn't say that in the Summer:-).. Still can fly
then, you just have to get up before sun rise, so you can get a few hrs flying time before your all wet :-0 Barry.. The way I do it.... It is a "stunt".... And a funny one at that:-) |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
you guys think knife edge coupling looks cool, try a inverted flat spin landing, now that is a real 3d stunt[sm=pirate.gif]
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I just have not been able to do flat spins:-(... I get to the stall, Give up elev.
rudder.. some throttle and what ever on the ail... But it just don't work out for me.. The nose keeps wanting to go down.. more throttle and it starts to roll out... I tried the invert flat spin and it seemed like it was going to do it, But then it also rolled out... But it was the closest I ever got to doing one, not that I do it a lot, but working on it:-)... Now an "inverted" flat spin right into a landing... That may be something to watch someone else do... Dang... Their showing rain for the next 3-4 days:-(.... I should have gone to the field today..... Well, at least I got some benny points with the boss.. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I used Du-Bro pinned hinges, and 30 min epoxy ,,,, 50 plus flights and no problems. I don't ecpect any either. Additionaly, the pinned hinges are alot easier to install as well.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)raideron, This is the way I do an inverted flat spin. I use maximum 3D rates EXCEPT on the ailerons, I use normal on them. And the UCD46 does them great. Go high, go slow level flight, off throttle, as the plane slows give full up elevator until nose stalls or not even quite a stall, go to the inner up corners with the sticks (full throttle, full right rudder, full down elevator, and full left aileron), this will start the flat spin than slowly add right aileron until she flattens out nicely. The amount of aileron will depend on the wind etc. Also after she starts to flatten out I reduce the throttle a little bit and slack of the rudder a little too or it will roll out. The last adjustments depend greatly on wind and your individual set up on your airplane. Using this techneque I can flat spin all of my airplanes. The start is always the same but the reductions and speed of the add of right aileron varies. That is where practice comes it. To do the inverted flat spin landing, which I'm pretty good at too, you just let her come on down!!!
Hope this helps, Thanks, Barry |
