RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)Got the YS110 mounted in my UCD60 last night. Haven't run the engine yet, will break in tonight and maiden tomorrow. This plane, I call Scarface, looks a little haggard from previous crashes but she flys very good. I'm hoping even better with the 110. Even with all the extra weight from repairs she's not fat. My digital scale says 8lbs 2ozs right on the money. With the havier motor I moved the battery/receiver back as far as I could reach (with out cuting a special hole etc.) and she balances right at 4 7/8" Before I was at 5 1/8" That's pretty close considering the engine weighs 6.5 ozs more than the the trusty Saito. I also moved the tank back to mostly inside the canopy area (one of the benefits of YS). This helped with the balance I'm sure. This CG is exactly where the manual recommends. I'm gonna fly there and see if I need to rebalance. I've been as far back as 5 1/2" but didn't like it there and moved to the 5 1/8" where I liked it. Liked it a lot! The 60 is like the 46 where you can balance all over the place and still have it fly great. The 46 is good anywheres from 4 1/2 to 6. I perfered about 5 3/8" or so on that baby but didn't like the 60 that far back.
Anyways, with my two new planes, Showtime and Yak...I'm stll hungry to fly the UCDs. Still some of the greatest planes out there. And greatly underrated I think. I'm betting this 110 is a riot on the UCD. And it's almost a one pound lighter than other planes with the same engine. She's gonna rocket out of a hover. Maybe even as good as my good friend gjeffers!!!!! Thanks and have a great day. Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey Barry, Is there anything comparable to the Showtime? Not something with the SFG's, just comparable in flight?[8D]
What did you put in for an engine in yours? |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Thanks Barry Cazier and raideron

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)CeeGee. This Showtime is a special plane. I haven't even flown it with the SFGs yet (today I'm gonna try them). It flew really, really nice. You don't have to worry so much about speed although I'm sure you can overspeed it you don't worry like you do on the UCD. Feels like a speed demon to me. It flys more precise than the UCD but very similar.
The only planes I can compare it to are: Yak, I like the Showtime much better than the Yak and it's less money. The Funtana, well, let's just say I like the Showtime better than the F90 and the UCDs. Well, the ST is more of the same only BETTER. The Mayhem is close to it but so far I really do love the Showtime. I have the YS110 in the ST. Oh yeah, and in every other plane I have. Thanks Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Barry... Let us know how the SFG's worked for you:-)... Mine is still
in the box... But should be ready by next weekend... But it's HOT here.... And YS's run alittle diff... in the heat... Well I have been searching for that Gary special "cheap" NIB Satio 100 for my 46...... But..... Anyhow the mount is in the UCD 46 for my Mag 91.. They are a bit heavy.. But maybe by Wed. or the weekend I'll see how much diff... The weight really means... I still believe it'll be Great! But in the mean time... The Profile is going strong.... I have been trying the "Gary's:-) K.E.Spins" But not doing great on them:-(... I can get about 4 spins before falling out.... But then again I may have not put the fuse back together stright on the profile.... But I can live with it.... It's still FUN:-)))) Man it's HOT.............................. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)raideron. Flew with the SFGs today. Man it makes this plane awesome. I really liked them. Seemed to make it fly better everywhere. It was even easier to hover, but they make the plane pretty touchy. Maybe a little more expo and a little more practice. I was very nervous about landing, but had no problems. The plane lands easy buy man, you only have about an inch of clearance. I fly off of grass so I was really concerned but no problems. To be honest this is such a novelty that I'm not real sure how to evaluate the performance yet. But it did make the plane fly much "crisper". And awesome flatspins with them on. KE was actually harder because the nose would get very high and I'd reduce the throttle until the engine wouldn't pull it and then it would fall out. But I'm sure there's a happy medium that I'll find. It was very calm today so landings were easy, we'll see how it goes with a little wind. I had to retrim the plane when I installed them and I think I've got more triming to do. They are however, a very good thing on the plane. But they are new enough that I need more experience to fly them.
Another note. I fly the UCD60 with the 110 today for the first time. Awesome. Man, what a difference it made in this plane. It's 12ozs lighter than the Showtime and you can feel it. The extra power makes the UCD fly much better. I was really surprised. The engine was brand new and still performed very nicely. This is definetely a better set up. What fun this plane has brought me. And I almost did a rising flatspin. I got it to stop and hover in flatspin and maybe rise a little bit. But not like the Mayhem or the 46. But what an improvement to the UCD. You have to make sure you don't overspeed though. And one more think, changed the way I hooked up to the airplane with my fish scale and improved the accuracy of the thrust. I had 3 YS that now pull approx 13.4 lbs of thrust. That's quite a bit better than the earlier readings I got. The difference between my readings and say seanychen is probably only elevation. I think he got over 15lbs. Anyways, have a great day guys. Thanks, Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Guys - Theres about 5 of us at our field that fly UCD 46's. Tonights topic was, when checking CG, is it right side up, or upside down?
My opinion is, get it close, then move it to match your flying style, etc, since each plane is and everyones preferance different. BTW, I have an OS 91 in mine, flying on 15% and a 15X4W APC,,, what a combo !!!! |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
you check CG upside down

it was 78 this morning Ron, almost froze to death!!!!! im beginning to wonder why no one else is having any luck with the kespin, mine are decent and go till i chicken out, still leary of the KESPIN landing:D
wish i had a ST:( |

missed your post perk, its upside down;)

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Raid , what happened to your profile? Not the CA issue I hope! I've been flying the crap out of mine ..love it! Are you doing any waterfalls? If so are you finding you need some ail. correction to keep the wing level?
Thanks John |

Hey John... Ohh I wanted to fly longer than tank was willing to go
and it won the battle:-( (Same with the UCD..But was able to pan- cake it in, which ripped the reinforced gear out... I think I need at least 20oz tanks:-)) ... I almost made it back But.... When I retrieved it, it looked good and I just smiled:-)... Back at the table refueling it I saw the tail moving a bit...:-( But it's back up and flying after repairing the fuse.. No problem with the wing... And believe me doing missed tail touches, The wing had some extensive test of strength:-0 which it passed with flying colors:-) I started doing waterfalls, and mine does need ail. correcting... Gary... Yeah It was nice this AM.... I got up to 8 spins today... But the nose hang down a bit:-( And it's a job to keep her(profile) in it.... But I was wondering if I'd even make it after the hour or so monsoon that passed last nite.. I started to wonder if we would make it to the AM.... Winds must have been 40-60mph... Call the sis-in-law about 5 miles away and nothing there:-))) Did it go through Trona?? |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Upside down was my opionion too....
thanks !! |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)I always balance my low/middle wing planes upside down. My high wing planes upright. Also, in the manual of the UCD it shows a picture balancing it upside down. You know, like you fly it.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey guys!! Ron, nice picture of your profile. Looks cool. [8D] What engine are you running? I'm looking forward to getting mine together and flying. I bought an OMP Katana. Gonna be fun........
Thanks Barry about the info on the Showtime. It sounds awesome. [X(] I'll have to wait untill next year though. I have four planes now and the wifey probably won't like me getting another one yet. [&o] I'll have to crash or sell a few. With my flying style though the crashing might be the easiest and most likely. I took the UCD and Twist out flying the other day and kind of crashed the Twist. Well sort of. My nose started itching and I reached up to scratch it and the Twist did some real quick changes in altitude and direction. [X(][X(] Well, I managed to get it leveled out but it pancaked into the taller grass beyond the runway and broke the prop and nylon bolts holding on the landing gear. No other damage though so it was back into the air for some more fun flying.......[8D] |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)Oh...the nose scratch pancake landing?!?!?!?
Thanks Barry |

yea Ron we got one of those fun storms, (keeps you looking out the window) and i think it was the night before last[sm=drowning.gif] nice bro, imean pro[sm=RAINFRO.gif]
CEE GEE-BARRY, oh boy, another landing to work on, ithink i can, i think i can, i think i can;) |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey Guys,
I ran 21 calls yesterday-4 after midnight, raced home, got all my flying stuff in the truck, ran out to the field & guess what? No one there. I guess the club took sunday off. So I had the entire field to myself, well there was that squadron of mosquitos( the kind that bite ). Plowed my foamie into the ground, & no glue anywhere. So up went the UCD. Still trying to get my KE passes straight. It tucks I mix in a % or two of ele and it pulls. So back and fourth I go. Just can't seem to get a clean KE pass going. Got tired of that, so went for the fun stuff. Flat spins:D:D:D, oh yeah. On one of them I almost became a certified FS qualified landing UCD pilot. My pullout was at 5', I'm usually a 20 foot chicken, but my roll-out was a-little on the late side. Pucker facter=10. So up for some harriers, upright & inverted. Getting low on the old fuel time to land. Well after getting the thumbs all worked up I figured time to go get caught up on some sleep. Finally read the entire Showtime thread. I see most of the regular UCD guys over there. Guess I might have to join in, sounds like a great plane. It's going to have to wait until some of the hangar is thinned out. I have four planes for sale, so maybe soon. Well SPUDs out........see ya |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey CeeGee... I have a YS 63FZ init... It pulls it nice... But I can see
the difference power wise this time of year... And just maybe YS's are affected a bit more with our temps here:-( Pancake landings..... I've done that, I've done that!!!! Tanks just will not work with me on extended times... Fumes should burn?? Gary... Yeah those storms do pop-in and out quick and sometimes it's hard to believe the damage caused in that short of time.... Perk.. I also do mine upside down on mid/low wing Well was going to work on the UCD....(in the house:-)) But for some unknown reason I have the S.T. box opened and slowly working on it instead... Got up early to fly..... But the old knee would not cooperate... It's funny how things change during different times in your life.... |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
gjeffers,
I need some advice. I have flown my ucando 5 times and dead stick landed everytime. I have a new saito 100 with a new OS f plug, Wildcat 30% fuel. The high speed needle seems ok. IT is at @1 3/4 out. RPm @ 9800 with a 15/6 MAS prop. The engine would idle good on the ground and transition well. It seemed to go through a tank fast. @ 5min. When I would idle back in flight for an extended period of time it would quit. On last flight I leaned low speed @ 1/8 turn and it still quit at idle while flying. Do these engines need an on board ignitor, or do I just have a tuning problem? Thanks, Tom |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
from my readings on the engine forum some of the saitos have different settings and there is no "magic setting" i have only owned this one and never hade a bit of trouble (the only trouble was not the engines fault but was mine)so all i can say is to first set idle to where when you pull the ignitor off there will be a slight drop in idle(you need a little smoke, not much) but have a good idle, then kick her in the a*^ full throttle and peak her with the tach and then back her down 200-300, should be around 8800 on 15% and maybe 9200 with 30%, these are my readings and im thinking 9800 may be a little lean ,and if she dosnt run good and transition good then its a supply problem, then you have to start at the carb and work towards the tank, or tank to carb, oh and make sure that the clunk didnt jam in the front of the tank too;)and check those valves, .002 is best.just remembered you said it was guzzling fuel this is ususlly caused by to rich a low needle setting, mine is out from bottom only half a turn.
good luck Tom and let me know how it goes! |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)I'm certain you have a tuning problem. The Saito is a very reliable engine, even mounted inverted. Are you sure it isn't a YS? Ha Ha. First question I would ask...Where is your tank mounted. It needs to be forward up against the firewall. If it is there then I would suspect you can lean it down just a bit on the low end if you are still at the factory settings. The low end (the screw in the black throttle arm) can be leaned down a lot from the factory settings. If you've already done that than check your idle speed. We don't want speed sitting around idle so we need to check it. It should be for this exercise about 2200 RPM. After you determine reliability you can probably slow it down to under 2000 if you want but I always try for about 2000 RPM. Obviously you should make certain your glow plug is good, maybe try a new one. And last, take a razor knife and pull out part of the glow plug spring a very small amount. I'm talking about 1/32 of an inch. Just a very small amount. This helps get the "glow" down into the combustion chamber and makes for a more reliable idle. If all of that doesn't work you just as well buy a YS, as you're in for a tuning nightmare.
Thanks Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)Hey guys, had a scary experience yesterday. I was flying the UCD and ST back to back at a club fly in. I was taking off the UCD and I couldn't get it to lift, I thought, "that's weird" so I gave it full up elevator at full speed and it nosed over and flipped upside down. (no damage) After that happened I remembered, I hadn't changed the model on my radio. I looked down and it still said Showtime. Wow!!! I was lucky. Turns out the ST and UCD are reversed on the elevator servos. Up is down and visa versa. Anyways, check them radios boys...That's the first time I've ever done that. I'm usually so careful about such things but I guess in the excitment of the day I just forgot.
Thanks Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)raideron, is one of your knees older than the other one? Mine are both the same age.
thanks Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Barry That's a good ??... MMmmmm I'm not so sure now... Let me
get back to you on that.. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey Barry,
SPUD here-You know I thought about it, and both of my knees are the same age. The one thing I did notice though was that I would be 45 except I was sick a year, so I'm only 44. I did the same thing with the rev. model with my foamies the other day. I have to look into that ST it sounds like a sweet plane. SPUDs out.....see ya |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hi guys, would a O.S. 91 4 Stroke work in the UCD .46??? I love to hover!!!
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Yes I have the 91 4 stroke in mine. Just have to watch the old throttle action when not verticle.:D:D
SPUDs out............hope it helps. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
ORIGINAL: SPUD37 Yes I have the 91 4 stroke in mine. Just have to watch the old throttle action when not verticle.:D:D SPUDs out............hope it helps. Whats the throttle position in hovering?? Thanks! |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
triton, he means not to go to fast and explode your plane, full throttle in vertical only, you have to watch your speed with that much power;)
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hi. I have some problems whith the u- can do 60. The engine(Magnum 90 two stroke) is flooded. The tank is so much higher than the carb when mounted inverted. Is the 46 size the same way. I just cant the engine to work upside down. I tested it and mounted it upside just to see if there where any differences. Then it run just fine.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
1/3-1/2 depending on your prop. But Gjeffers is right I meant not to go full boogy in the horizontal. It would look great for a second or two, then it will look like an exploding balloon. The 91 will give you the ability to swing that big low pitch prop which will let you pull out of your hover with acceleration and unlimited vert. Have fun with it................:)
Hey Barry you really don't have to worry about your SFG's------------just sew them if you break them[&:][&:][&:] SPUDs out..............see ya |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Yes this can be an issue with inverted. My Magnum 70FS isn't having this problem but the OS46 2 stroke I had in it did. What I did was leave the high speed screw closed until I put the starter to it and closed it first when landed. It will also need a different setting than normal. What I found is the screw didn't need to be adjusted out as far when mounted inverted and it was still running rich as it should (not to lean). I did not move the tank as many suggest and it worked fine doing this. Only reason I changed from the 2 stroke setup was I wanted the four stroke power. I know where your at though cause it drove me crazy until I figured out the practice listed above. Once i had it out a couple of times I did talk with a couple of people who had been down the same road and amazingly they all said they did the same thing rather than altering the tank placement.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Thanks for the info. guys..
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)kimfrode...You could always just fly it inverted!!!! The 60 size has this problem. Sometimes if you route your carb fuel line high up in the cowl creating a loop that helps. Also a pump of some kind helps but it is a problem. Some have even cut the tunnel down and mounted the fuel tank a little lower which solves the problem. I put a YS 110 in mine the other day and it solved the problem as well because it has a pump.
The 46 isn't the same way. It's fuel tank is lower and doesn't share the problem. It's problems are inverted flat spin landings. Spud, you're right as usual. I'll just sew them back on. But they do make you nervous landing. Gotta keep that baby level. You fly for 12 minutes trying NOT to keep it level and then you have to land keeping it perfectly level. Hard. Thanks Barry |

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I agree with the others, an OS 91 and a 15X4W APC is a great combo. And like spud and gjeffers said, watch the throttle and speed.
These arn't made to go fast. I have the end result of that, and it's not pretty. Has anyone tried a 16X4W with an OS 91? I'm curious,,,,, |
