Hey Spud, great to hear from other vets! i spent 3years in the army with the 502mp co 2nd Armoured Div (Pattons own) at FT Hood Texas. there for approx 6 mos i flew in a heli and was EYE IN THE SKY,(the guy with the spotlight),the funnest job i have had to date!now i here there is no more 2nd AD and its the 1st ID i believe, but i do have my discharge papers signed by George S. Patton jr,(pattons son was our cg in 73-74).
THANKS FOR YOUR 22 YEARS!!

May be a silly question Spud, but what is a iron bucking bar?

Well, I spent my time in the nuclear submarine service chasing the Soviets. Such fun!! I didn't like it after a while because I like to sleep with my window open...........[:-]

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Hey Gjeffers, A bucking bar is what you use on the other side of a rivet gun to flatten a rivet out to hold sheet metal. I was at Ft Hood from '84-'85 then on to Korea.

Hey Cee Gee, Gotta thank you bubble heads too. I unfortunately smoke to much to have been all sealed up.

Talk to you guys soon, Spud's out

Hey Gjeffers my current CSM used to be an MP. He spent 18 mo in the sand box as a Ops SM. My turn at the lottery is coming up in Jun/Jul time frame. Its a 50/50 kind of thing you know. My E8 packet goes in in May so if I get picked up for the box maybe I'll go over as a !st Sgt. Who knows? O'well keep flying till that time.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Hey Spud, We had lots of smokers on board back then. Worst thing was that we didn't have an oxygen generator on board so eventually we would get low on the amount of oxygen we could bleed out from the banks so we would have to light what they called "oxygen candles" The "candles" would burn down and add oxygent to the air but usually lower amounts than normal. You could tell the oxygen level was too low when peoples cigarettes would go out if they hadn't taken a puff on them for a minute or so. True story.

Hey Barry, I got my "spoilerons" set up. I just deleted the settings I had and started over using a section of the Futaba FAQ page. It works. Only thing is I'm not sure of is what direction the elevators are suppose to go when the ailerons go up. When the ailerons go up are the elevators supposed to go up or down?

Rocketman_, That's great on those repairs..... But I just like the solid ones
better... Kinda feels somewhat safer:-)

Hey SPUD37.. Great info and thanks for your time!!! Well all the guy's and
gal's that did there call!!! My time was with the Air Force, Early warning
in the 552nd ADC out of Sacramento Ca.. Keeping the old C-121's up and
flying around our coast as the eye's in the sky... Then a my year in the
not so good "V" keeping the old "lead sled, drip pan special" F-100's flying
It was a great learning time...

Hey Spud, if you do go you will more than likely have a great bunch under ya because i think some of these kids in now are pretty swift, you might need to beef up those sleeves to hold those large chevrons!!

CeeGee,back when i was in i think more people smoked that didnt, and it wasnt marlboros[sm=spinnyeyes.gif]

Ron i think that Barry and rocketman are the reason they started locking up the model airplane glue, how else would a guy successfully sew up a propeller?:D

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:)CeeGee, Good job! See they aren't all that hard. I use my spoilerons without any elevator input. I actually have a seperate switch that mixes the elevator and spoileron but the only time you would use that would be to do waterfalls, tight loops. I'm also experimenting with that mix on harriers also. But for flat spins, hovers, landing etc. I don't mix any elevator in. And if you want that you need to set up on a different mix. This is a pre programed mix though. I think it is mix 4 if I'm not mistaken. Keep after it and pretty soon you won't even have to fly the plane, just sit in a lawn chair and watch the radio do all the work.
Thanks,
Barry

Thanks Barry, I'm going to try to bust loose and go fly this afternoon / evening. We are supposed to leave for 5 days tomorrow morning so I could be tight. I don't know how I'm going to go and not fly for five days. .....[X(][X(]

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Hey Cee Gee, Yeah I know the feeling I used to have to use my 02 mask to get the old zipo to lite at alt.

Hey Raideron, Those old Connies were my dads favorite airplane. He was an AE[airframe & engine], thats pre AP[airframe & powerplant], for National airlines.

Hey Cee Gee, Your going to love spoil. Just get lined up on final, and you know that point where it looks like its going to float down the runway, flip the switch the air dirties up over the wing and your down, no more running ut of tarmac. In high alpha it allows some of the swirling air on the back side of the wing to escape, thus no wobbling wing.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Hey Barry, Maybe if you put an extra landing gear on top of the plane, those inverted landings wouldn't hurt so bad.

gjeffers 04-29-2005 09:51 PM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Barry, the spoilerons worked great on landing in the wind,(not to mention they also help with landing on my strip, which is downhill, and uphill the other way!) but when landing downhill they also help alot.i also like the gear off my crashed ucd60 a lot better than the short gear that came with the 46,gives me more tipping room for landing in the wind also.
Thanks

Barry Cazier 04-30-2005 01:10 AM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:)gjeffers, Glad you like the spoilerons. They really do help in the wind or after fuel has drained out. Landing is so much more predictable. What does your 46 weigh with the 100? You said you are using 15x6 prop. I was using 16x4W. I was wondering if you have experience with that prop? Also the 16x4W prop is at least 1 oz lighter that the 15x6. I'm still debating on what to do. I really don't believe in overpowering a plane too bad and the 82 is such a sweetheart. But that 100 is available?!?!?! I was looking at the 60 tonight and the tears started to flow. I did the worst thing. I fell in love with an airplane. You are not supposed to do that. Still don't know if I'm going to attempt repair. It would take quite a bit. And with my luck, I'd just crash again. Maybe I'll just quit.
Thanks,
Barry

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Prop question:

I have the 50 SX in my U Can Do and somewhat arbitrarily propped it with an 11 x 6. With this configuration it will sustain a hover, although just barely. I’m going to experiment with less pitch in hopes of gaining more power in a hover, and possibly the ability to pull vertical out of a hover. Does anyone have a prop suggestion for that engine?

Thanks for any input,

Rob

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Great day at the field today... My YS has been running better, and great
today in our fly-in.. After reading Gary's post I put on my only wood prop
13X4 pro zinger..WoW Transition is like a Rocket... I thought the APC was
good... But WoW.. Touch the throttle and responds is "Right Now" Man, I
mean "NOW"... YS's are just unbelievable in response and power/size!!
Thanks to all from Kingman that showed up:-) We'll see you all next week
at your fly-in in Kingman!... John... Enjoyed your show that you put on!!
That was great!!

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Barry, ive used 16x4 apc,and it was huge, never weighd it but i dont see how it could weigh less than the apc 15x6,but like i said i never weighed it. i have tried pro zinger x4s and to be truthful i think your just spinning your engine for nothing, i like the grab a 6 has and just use my throttle to adjust control, but i still have the graab if i want, i know im going against the grain but did i say i like traction?i have ordered a new pro zinger 15x6, the one i broke was a reg 15x6, the pros are more in between a reg and a W.

now as far as the weight goes for it, it stands right now at 6lbs 2oz. i do need to go to a 2.25 in spinner and dump this 2.5 in tru turn

v twin 1k,these props these guys recommend will help some but i dont think there gonna give you what you want, you will have to break down and purchase a larger engine, id say at least a 72 four stroke to get a decent pull out

ron, glad to hear your having some good luck and a good time:D
good luck!

Evil Homer..... Hi... I have a YS 63FZ on my UCD 46 running a 13X4W prop
Have a Great Day!!

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

When I went from the 13x4(3D) from apc, it made the pull out unbelivable! Raideron, I think that when you went from the apc to wood, you also reduced the rotaing mass of the prop and its letting the YS hit the revs alot quicker. The wood props have their good points and bad points. I wonder if they make a carbon fiber prop that can be used by the smaller engines?

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

I went with a 12 x 4 Zinger yesterday (closest thing the local hobby shop had) and noticed a definite hover improvement with the 50 SX. Barry and Rocketman, thanks for the sizing help - I'll be placing an order with Tower soon.

GJeffers, The extra power offered by a 72 four stroke would be great, but unfortunately it just isn't possible right now. I am impressed with the 50 size though. Considering its small size it pulls that plane very well.

I am trying to determine a good way to route the exhaust from the 50 SX down below the wing. Does anyone have a suggestion that won't hinder performance while keeping the exhaust residue away? So far I've played with a piece of silicon tubing but needed two bends to get the look and deflection angle that I want. This configuration lowers the exhaust note slightly - I have yet to measure an actual reduction in RPM but I'm guessing it is fairly substantial.

Thanks again,
Rob
