Pizazz engine mounting procedure?

Hi, guys.

I'm just putting my Pizazz ARF together and am a little confused by the unusual engine mount in this plane.

Here's what I can't quite figure out: The wood ply side rails in the nose have a cutout where the engine lugs fit between them, yet the only mounting hardware I see is two metal straps. What does the bottom of the engine lugs rest on? The photos in the manual don't show this, and the manual wasn't clear on this point, at least to me.

I asked my local hobby shop owners and they said I should just glue some ply under the wooden side rails, but that didn't seem like a very good answer, since I have to assume that everything is included in the kit that is necessary for mounting an engine.

BTW, I'm installing a Saito 72.

Anyone want to help a novice on this point?

Thanks,

Jeff

The engine mounts to the two aluminum rails and the rails mount to the plywood.

You have to drill 4 holes in the aluminum rails to mount the engine to.

Thanks, Chris & Bentgear. When I first looked at the metal straps they just looked too flimsy to be the only thing to mount the engine to.

Jeff, check them on a regular basis for tightness. If they get loose the aluminum rail tends to crack.

I went through 3 sets of those aluminum bars before I just made my own. Go with them for now to get you flying, but I'd make some new ones that are twice as thick.

Yea they break in my pizazz also so I buy a nylon engine mount and now I use it, yea I use a dremel to get out all the plywood that you mount the aluminum, but now I am happy

Hi Jeff
I just got a Pizazz myself. Several of the guys in our club have it and have been using the included engine mount. After talking with some members of other clubs they recommend cutting out the ply rails and installing glass filled mounts. The supplied mounts were always breaking. That is what I plan to do after a few flights.

I guess that either I fly like sissy, or my Saito 56 is not strong enough, but I have been running with the stock mount for a gallon of fuel without a problem. I am turning a 12x6 prop.

Mine had a K&B 65 (one flight), then an old K&B 61(two flights) and then went to switch to a 70 OS surpassII and the mount was cracked. I bought some thicker aluminum strip at the HW store ($3 for 4 feet) and cut some new ones. Works great, not broken yet (knock on wood) and I have enough for another 8 pairs of mounts, like the plane will last that long. Flies very well with the .70!
