Smoke in edge...
I now plan to put a TME smoke pump in my AW 29% edge...
What pump should I get? Theres 2 versions I believe. What battery are you guys using? Still not sure of where to put the tank. The main tank is under the wing tube on the CG. I could stick one next to it I guess? How do you guys run your lines? and how many? Thanks from a smoke newbie! :) Chris |

why carry the weight of the battery and pump around when you
have a free source of pushing the oil into the system by using crankcase pulses through a check valve that will develope up to 7lbs in your oil tank and then all you need is the on off valve. We have been using this system for years and it works well just as the outboard motor companys did all thru the 1950s to supply the fuel to thier carburators. |

On my Extra I used a NIMH 720 pack from batteries america. It is being covered now so I will hopfully have it flying soon. Andrew |
TME is a good start...

Any el-cheapo 600 mah receiver battery works fine. The TME requires around a 300 mah to work...so a smaller glider receiver pack would work as well...but it may not last more than 2 flights (I'm guessing). JeffC and I have been using a 600 mah standard Hitec receiver pack for the TME for two years without any hiccups and it will last for atleast 4-5 flights. Ted's back pressure idea is ok, but it doesn't dump fluid fast into the smoke muffler (but it does work). Bladders also work...and so do Perry pumps. For maximum smoke and fluid flow reliability, use the TME. It's a no-brainer once one starts using the system. It's easy and it works well. In terms of tank placement, check the CG, see where you can stuff the biggest tank possible and go for it. We're using 24-26 ounce tanks right in front of the CG and only getting a few minutes of solid smoke. If i could fit a gallon jug on the bottom of our Extra or Sukhoi for smoke fluid, I would! Ha! The fluid lines should be a simple deal - if you need particular help with it, I can take some snapshots of our setups and send them along. Let me know. I've got a TME in my AirWild Edge540T.
I'm using a 1000mah pack, and a 20 oz tank. With the supply line to the muffler pinched down, I get good smoke for about 7 or 8 minutes. Open up the choke on the supply line and you get unbelievably thick smoke for about 3 minutes. I ran the thing in my driveway one day and my neighbors house disappeared, hidden by the smoke...it was cool. Have any other TME users out there notice any leakage from the pump itself? I pack paper towls in around the pump and change them about twice a flying season...seems to be a little smoke oil coming out of the pump. I've also noticed that the smoke oil (Super Dri) attacks the rubber in my tail wheel and makes the tail wheel swell up, and eventually the tail wheel will come off the hub during a turnaround after a landing...I'm trying to find a tailwheel that will not be affected by the smoke oil. -Doug Brindle AMA 251606 |
