Funtana S40 engine
 

Dears,
I bought a used funtana s40, and I'm new to 3d, I don't know what engine and propeller to use, only the below engines are available

-O.S 75ax 2stroke
-O.S 71 4stroke
-O.S 91 fx 2stroke

Also I need to know is it a hard plane to fly and land cause our flying field has a very short runway, as the past years I was flying helicopter so there was no problems for me to land :), anyways if you guys have any advice for me please do.

Definately the OS 70 4 stroke,best torque and response,perhaps a GOOD 13x4,12x6,maybe 14x4.Try APC blades,try to use a low pitch wide blade (W)
Dont fly it fast, mid throttle at cruise,all you want when you are going up.Make sure the firewall and landing gear block are well glued or pinned or screwed.
Its outdated,but a good plane to try your skills at 3D.

It may land with the nose pitched up a bit,most Funtanas drag their tail a bit on approach,just give it a few blips of power,with practice the approach can be made very short.Take of is easy,just some rudder, easy power,feed in a bit of elevator and you are up.

I put the O.S. 91 two stroker on mine with 14x14W APC prop wow lots of power it rockets out of a hover love it

for the Funtana - S 40 you need atleast the 70 /4 stroke but even better an 80 sized 4 stoke. forget the 2 stoke engines in these 3D profile jobs. i have an OS 81 in my Funtana 40 and its a pefect combo for any 3D or normal aerobatic flying. so forget the 70 size go for the 80 size 4 strokes then you will be happy.

What do you mean "forget the 2strokers for these...." obviously you don't know much about 2strokes huh?? Ever heard of using a MCP/header with a 2stroke-better throttle response than most 4strks. What do you think that our big gassers are??????:eek:

Two strokes are good engines! I like them because of their easy maintenance. I will be installing an OS Surpass II 70 in the 40s. It's what I have on hand. I need to finish installing the servos, engine-carving the cowl, electronics, and balance. I'm looking forward to this bird.

lol u r using same set-up as me.

ive been flying the fun40 for over 4 years now, its one of the best 3d planes ive ever flown, and i also fly giant scale.

just be carefull that it can stall at hi speeds, if u keep the speed down and even on 3d rates it wont snap on you, but with hi speed and even low rates, it can snap on you, so be gentle on the elev if u r at hi speeds, u can be hard on elv if u r at stall speeds.

I'm going to mount a OS 61FX on the s40 I picked up at a swap meet/auction last fall. I saw a video on a flying giants form where the guy had a OS 50 on it and it seemed to be plenty of power to clime out of a hover pretty fast. From what I have research on this plane a 50 two stroke is plenty of power as well as a 70 four stroke. Thats not to say that you couldn't use something bigger like some of the other guy's are saying they are using.

I have the funtana 40 and was thinking of putting in a saito 82 in her.  Will that be enough power for pulling out of hoovers and doing some basic 3d manuevers?  Also, I will be installing the following:

Sandard futaba Servos S3003 & S3004 with long servo arms for the control surfaces

4.8v battery pack

Futaba Fast radio w/receiver

Engine:  Saito .82?

Using hardware included with the kit

Open to suggestion and feedback

Well I finally got around to pick up a motor mount for the 61FX and got talking to the owner of the hobby shop in the town that I'm working in and he said that the 61FX is over kill for this plane . He said that here in WI. the sea level that we are at all I need is a 46FX with a low pitch prop and it will pull out of a hover and climb unlimited vertical. He said the 46 will fly all the 3D you can throw at it. When I told him most of the guy's posting on rc universe and Flying G's are using bigger engines He said they were probably flying at higher altitudes. If anybody tried a 46FX on this plane or if you can confirm the reason I should use the O.S.46FX instead of the O.S.61FX let me know I have both engines not being use right now

I have been trying to break-in my Saito 82 and every time I start it, it throws the prop nut. Have anyone been experencing the same problem that could recommend a fix. This gets very flustrating

We're off the subject of this thread, but I know the frustration of a backfiring Saito and can help out. Please check out RCU "Glow Engines", "Club Saito" #5 on the list, go to page #584 5/29/09 post # 14600 with my same question regarding backfiring. Then check the answers given by Stallwart Post 14604, RC-Bearings Post 14605, Slats Post 14607 and Ernie Misner Post 14617. All inputs were totally helpful and provided the answer. Do NOT prime, don't fill the fuel tank to overflowing and push a shot of fuel into the intake needle or intake manifold. I use a manual hand crank fuel pump and count the revolutions of the pump to avoid overfilling. The Saitos will draw fuel like it's hooked to an electric pump while being cranked over for start with an electric starter. I found that both of my needles, high and low, were both set extremely rich. My high speed needle is presently set at 1 1/2 turns out and I believe the low speed is set at 2 1/2 out. Caution, if the engine is new you need to run very rich needle settings for the break in period with the likely problem being totally related to raw fuel in the cylinder at the time of initial cranking. Hope this helps you, others helped me.

Airborne did you solve the engine problem and if so how does it fly with the Saito 82 I'm holding off mounting an engine until I get more input on weather the OS 46FX will pull this thing out of a hover with unlimited vertical pull. I have a OS 46FX and a OS 61FX I just don't know witch is better suited for this plane.

Well I ended up putting in the OS 46FX can anybody tell me what size prop I should use.

I like an 11x5 or you can try the 12.25 x 3.75.
