Sealing hinge gaps
 

Do you seal top and bottom of surface or just bottom? Is it ok to just use box tape? Thats usually what I use to repair a hole or small tear....

I normally just do one side. However, with packaging tape you'll want to do both sides. If not, you'll get grass and dirt sticking to your tape in between your hinges. Don't ask how I know [:@]. You can use just tape, or sticky-backed monokote without any problems other than what I mentioned.

The best of both....seal BOTh sides. This will not only seal the gap but it makes it SO easy to keep the gap clean. Sparay and wipe. I cut a pc. of covering to match the model about 1/2" or so wide, fold it in half by taking about 4"-6" length at a time, crease it by dragging it over the edge of my work bench until I have done the entire length. I then deflect the surface fully open, lay it in place, and take a 6" long thin metal straight edge and lay it in the covering groove as I slowly iron one side; come back and do the other side...fool proof !

I have always just sealed the bottom with clear iron on covering. No problem cleaning or coming loose.

Ive always used sticky trim covering. Cut a strip about 1/3 of an inch....then fold in half all the way down. Use a card or something to crease it really well. Then spray the back of it with a water/dish soap mixture before peeling the backing off - Let it soak for a few seconds. Peel backing off...spray it again to wet the adhesive, then line up on plane while backing is still wet(allows you to move it around). Take card again to get the crease as far in as possible. Quick pass with iron to tack it down, then slowly work your way form one end to the other.

Ive only done one side except for the rudder, where I do both.

Its very easy.

:)I used to use monokote, either clear or colored per the model. But lately I've used Blendrem tape (medical tape) I buy it in one inch wide rolls from Walmart, Walgrens, etc. for just a couple bucks. It looks kinda whiteish but when you roll it out it goes on vertiually clear. It is so much easier than anything else I've tried. It's very nice. I usually do both sides.
