3D setup recomendations
All,
I inherited this model from a club member that crashed it while hovering: http://www.rcuniverse.com/product_gu...fm?kit_id=2111 It's a ModelTech Magic Extra - 40 size. I've got a Thunder Tiger Pro 46 on it and i have been experimenting with different size props. Currently i've got the following props: 11x7, 11x4, 11x6, 12.25x3.75 What would you all recommend for a 3D setup? FYI, i know i could probably go 4-stroke. If you could provide suggestions for my TT 46 (budget solution) and a 4-stroke solution (if necessary), i'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance! |
RE: 3D setup recomendations
Try your TT with a 11x3 on and remove the baffle or add an ultrathrust muffler. That should be enough.

RE: 3D setup recomendations
I've tested a bunc of APC props in the 11" range. The 11x3 made a bunch of rpm but no thrust. 11x5 was the best. The 12.25x3.75 was not liked by my engine. Hovering with the 11x5 was half throttle with excellent pullout. With the 12.25x3.75, hovering went to three quarter throttle with terrible pullout. Plane was a .46 size profile and the engine was a ST .51 with the stock muffler.

I say 12.25x3.75APC, 20/20 fuel and tower mufler! that`s what I use in my old 46fx with great success

RE: 3D setup recomendations
Thanks guys. After reading reviews, I started to become skeptical of where the CG was. Like i said, i inherited this plane and just assumed the previous flyer had it set. I bought a CG machine and tested it. Sure enough, the CG was IN FRONT of the leading edge. I removed the added weight in the nose and moved the CG back 4 1/3'' and WOW, what a difference. Now i can do just about any 3D maneuver with much more confidence. It's not squirley any more! (and i thought it was just me)
So now I'm really feeling the difference with the props. The best i've tried so far was 12x4. It hovers at about 3/4 to maybe a little less throttle, which is fine since i couldn't hover at all before (tip stall). However,i'm wondering if the 11x5 and a performance muffler would make a difference. Thanks for the comments! |
RE: 3D setup recomendations
I have used the TT Pro .46 for some 3D stuff and I always like the 11x4 APC or MAS props on it. The 12x4 props just didn't have the pullout I like. I would also try a 11x5 if you can find one. I would also reccomend trying the tower muffler. It is cheap and sounds great!
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXJB16&P=ML I am very suprised you were able to fly the plane with the CG that far forward. No wonder he crashed it!! |
RE: 3D setup recomendations
11x5 I've found to be the best too. ;)

RE: 3D setup recomendations
11x3 or 4 works very well with a UT muffler (partial pipe) otherwise you don't get the speed you need, so you end up with a 5 pitch
