How to hover

Is there some kind of tutorial on how to hover or a video that shows the stick movement. I have been praticing on FSOne but can't keep it longer than 5-7 sec.

practice is key :) get the plane in a hovering attitude and keep the throttle there, and just work your rudder and elevator try not to use aileron

I'll keep trying. Glad it is only on the sim-I would have run out of planes by now.

try moving the cg rearward a lil bit at a time. helps me on realflight.

What are you trying to hover with?
I agree with rednekk, move the CG rearward. Fly the plane inverted hands off ...or this might be cheating a little but since it's a sim make it slightly tail heavy until you learn the stick movements then move the CG back forward.

RE: How to hover

I can't speak for FSOne but on RealFlight if you try to hover without using ailerons the plane will torque roll and as the plane goes from canopy in to belly in the elev/rudder controls reverse. Man that's gonna be tough for a newb to try and master. In real life the torque rolling is there and it's definitely present in RealFlight so from my point of view I think it would be best to try and hold enough aileron to counteract the torque and keep it canopy in.

If there is anything I can add it's that at one time I said I was too old and my eyesight/reflexes were too slow and I would never get it. My nephew kept nagging and I kept trying and finally one day I could hover on the sim indefinitely. I tried it on my EFlite Extra 260 foamy and sure enough I could hold it for as long as the battery stayed up. I'm now hovering the big 50cc Extra 260 in my avatar and touching the tail at will. A couple of years ago I was saying it would never happen so the moral is don't give up. Put in lot's of practice on the sim and you'll get it, I promise but it won't happen in a day or two, it takes hours and hours of dedicated practice.

Good luck with your hovering and happy flying.

P.S. As mentioned above, you have to use the right plane and set the CG far enough aft so that it flies hands off inverted as well as right side up. I started off using the YAK 54 3D in RealFlight.

youre right, for a beginner its better to use aileron to counter act the torque roll.... after he masters it he can gradually let off on the counter aileron and control the airplane as it toque rolls

Yeh MJ, it's hard to make folks understand but it's all about practice, practice, practice. Then something finally clicks in your brain. It worked that same way when I was trying to learn Helicopters. I had been flying planks for 25 yrs and didn't think I would ever get it but now it all seems so easy that sometimes I wonder why I had so much trouble. Have a great one.

RE: How to hover

I concur... For me it was just a LOT of practice in the sim. I basically gave up at one point, but then suddenly a few days later it all of the sudden "clicked". I don't know how to describe it, but it went from being able to hover for 3-4 seconds, to being able to hover indefinately. Such an awesome feeling. Pick the largest 3D plane in RealFlight you can find as it's slower and easier. I used a 40% Edge to learn on. Then trying it on a real plane on the deck was probably the most joyful/memorable flight I've ever had. I believe I was jumping up and down while hovering down low that first time. :D

Practice makes perfect. There's not really a guide, just practice. For belly hover just remember to push rudder to the lower wingtip and you'll be golden. :)

I am going to try again. Thanks for the tip on belly hovering. That will help a great deal.
