NEW FLOAT DESIGN FOR PROFILES
1 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys... I have developed a new float design for Profile Planes. It's a single center float with two sponson floats attached with 2 carbon fiber tubes. I mounted my Kangke Gee Bee 40 on a 34 " set, all up weight for the floats ready to bolt on is around 6oz! They are finished with light spackle and 1 coat of polyurethane paint. The video is the test flight which flew great but I needed more wing incidence, I had 1 degree which was not enough. You can see in the video it takes awhile to take off then it pops off the water. . I reworked it to 2 1/2 degrees and now it's perfect! The Gee Bee with a Norvel 40 can hover, knife edge, knife edge loop, invert flat spins all with floats on! For more information check out my web site...

RE: NEW FLOAT DESIGN FOR PROFILES
Looks cool! I have thought about doing this to my Chinn Yak. How does it affect the 3D maneuvers? Does it change much between floats on or off? I know most profile guys have a very rearward CG as well. How does this translate to float flying? It looked like theGee Bee in the video had a fairly conservative CG setting and flew mostly in a sport plane style. Do you have any 3D videos?

RE: NEW FLOAT DESIGN FOR PROFILES
It's the first float plane I have flown that would pull out of a hover, it does slow down some maneuvers and speeds some up. It does a knife edge loop in about 4'. I had to move the CG forward from where I normally keep it because it didn't track well. Since that video I am wringing it out more but doubt if I'll be able to get more video because the weather is closing in on us in Michigan.

RE: NEW FLOAT DESIGN FOR PROFILES
I'm not big on profiles, but a friend is building a Northstar and I've been thinking about putting temporary floats on my Hot Stik to join in his fun. It flies well with skis. How much does that rig add in weight to a .40 size model?
When you say you reworked the incedence - is that float to model or did you have to alter the wing attachment itself? |
RE: NEW FLOAT DESIGN FOR PROFILES
It adds about 6-7oz. less if you don't paint them. I just shortened he rear support which lowered the tail of the plane in relationship to the floats.
