U-Can-Do with ST-90
Anyone out there flying the UCD 60 with the pre-chinese ST-90?
Would like to get some prop, fuel, plug choices to tweak mine for better performance. Thank you in advance for any information you might share! |

I think Tavis has had bad experiences with his UCD, not that you would have the same PeteJoMan. I havent seen anyone with that combo, but it may be a bit heavy. The popular engine is the Saito 100. I have flown the plane with this engine and it performs really well.

Tavis sometimes comes off as rough and abrasive, but he is a pretty good pilot and half way likeable............ You just have to put up with his ramblings from time to time! Todd |

I agree with Todd. Tavis comes off like a 'flower child' (a bloomin idiot) but he's really a pretty good guy and a good flier. In a year he's gone from very basic flying to hovering, flat spins, low loops (it comes out so low he bends the gear, lol) etc. Jon

ST 90 w/MCP in a UCD

Yep! My UCD has a pre-Chinese ST 90 with a MCP spinning an APC 15x4w at 11,400 peak RPM. (The MCP cured the ragged mid range, and boosted the power by over 1100 RPM.) Plug is a Hangar 9 for ducted fans, but the OS #8 works good too. Fuel is 15% Mach 7 castor/synthetic blend.
m.gramling also tried a ST 90 in his UCD, but later gave up on getting his ST 90 to run reliably enough for a UCD. (I think he switched to an OS 91FX?) Here's a link to a short movie of my UCD doing some hovering, an outside waterfall, and a low level wall into a hover. It's not much, but it shows that the ST 90 has adequate power for the UCD. (note: for some reason the engine sound in this movie is very unrealistic. You just have to put up with his ramblings from time to time! Tavis...dude..put down the crack pipe for a few, and maybe try to brush up your hovering skills on a simulator. Or do they have computers yet in in your neck of the woods..? Just because your planes fall out of the sky doesn't give you the right to bash others' choices for planes and motors. There ought to be a Jerry Springer recruiter somewhere calling you soon. Rick |

I'm using a mousse can pipe built from a Macs header and a 2"x10" aluminum hairspray can. It cured the mid range and flame out problems I was having with the stock muffler and made the ST 90 run good enough for use in the UCD. But it took a lot of experimenting and tinkering to get to this point.

sorry, i just cant get into that type of humor. I know he didnt break that plane himself (cept for stuffing it while flying) but even joking about stepping on planes and stuff like that is just not funny to me. Its like abusing children, theres no need to.

What recommended prop should I run on the UCAN DO .60 with a Super Tigre .75? I just installed this engine yesterday and took it out for some flights with a 12x7. I don't have a lot of experiance in this engine size range nor with 3d type stuff so please excuse the ignorance. But The aircraft flies very well, but falls out of the hover. I'm thinking prop is an issue as the engine should be able to do it. I may be underpowered? I had a 91 fx with 14 by 6 but the 91 fx never ran correctly mounted upside down so I off loaded it to a right side up application.

I'm running an APC 15x4w on my ST 90 w/MCP.
My nephew is runnng a TT Pro 61 w/MCP on his UCD spinning an APC 13x4w. It hovers and pulls out vertically at full throttle. So with a ST 75 powered UCD, I'd suggest starting with an APC 14x4w. |

My ST .75 runs very well with a 13x6 for sport flying on another plane. For 3D stuff you'd probably better with a lower pitch prop. I would think either 14x4W or 15x4W would be a good choice.

Dave, saw your video, great clip! Went flying yesterday with the UCD yesterday and really tried to ring it out. Still have the stock muffler and enjoyed some short duration hovering (still learning)at 1/2 to 5/8 throttle, but it will not pull out with authority. I really appreciate your input as far as the engine performance issue is concerned, (I'm gathering materials for the MCP this week) However, I would like to ask you one more question. When in high alpha flight, such as harriers, elevators etc.. do you switch in to flaps, spoilerons ? And if so, how much? Again, Thank you in advance for any assistance as I really enjoy this plane. It is truly a blast to fly!!!

Although I have both flapperons and spoilerons programmed into my UCD, I hardly ever use them. The flapperons help tighten up loops and inside waterfalls, and the spoilerons improve elevators and outside waterfalls. But these mixes can get you into trouble in a vertical hover, so I rarely activate them.
So far nothing I've tried has stabilized the UCD in harrier flight.....except full left aileron to keep it rolling. :) |
