First Taste of 3D flying!!
Today there was a fly-in at Lake Mills, Iowa, its a small town out in the middle of nowhere really. The biggest planes I was expecting was may around 80". Well I was in for a big surprise. I have been up there a couple and there was nothing this big. There was a some guys from Rochester, MN with 40% Carden Edge 540T's. WOW! Those things are huge. One guy was whippin' his around doing water falls, torgues 3 ft from the ground, harriers, and all sorts of other sweet stuff. My dad said it said it put his Big Hots to shame. Those guys but alot of other planes to shame too. I'll never forget the day I first say true 3D.

First Taste of 3D flying!!
No one can deny it's looks 20 times more impressive, to see a huge model 3Ding than a 40 size for exsample 3Ding. But what you've got to remember its a lot easier, although grantrd it takes more balls! Larger models are more stable, more predictacle, and things happen much more slowly, this gives lots more reaction time. Also the tremondous side area helps keep thigs 90/90, and if your flying a little stick type fun flyer the rudder input does horrible unwanted effects requiring much much more control and timing. In strong winds a small plane is much more effected by the wind, in short a small model is 20 times harder to 3D but looks 20 times less impressive full stop.

Hey! I was at that fun fly! How about that big purple and white Edge!! :D
|
First Taste of 3D flying!!
That was sweet. Man I wish I had something that big with enough power, and the skills to do everything those guys were doing. Was the purple one yours?? What were you flying that day?

First Taste of 3D flying!!
The only thing it takes to get that good is fuel.
|
First Taste of 3D flying!!
Speaking of fuel. He had to have 1/2 gallon of gas in that thing. I saw to tanks. I thought one was smoke and the other gas. Turns out both were gas.

First Taste of 3D flying!!
If you are talking about the red, white and blue Carden one tank was smoke. Dave puts on an awesome show! I had the purple Edge and Gary was nice enough to let me fly the 42% TB 260. Where are you from funflyer? You should come up to Marion sometime.

Staudacher, I'm from Charles City, IA so it was only 1 1/2 hr drive up there. My dad and I had the Big Hots, Somethin' Extra, and a JR Venture CP. We were sitting right next to the guy with the Funtana. I guess I thought both tanks work gas because he was flying at least 15 min. at a time. Well I guess he was never wide open except for power outs when hovering.

TO Funflyer,
Take us up on the visit to Marion. Our site is www.marionrcflyers.org. That Edge(Carden was mine) has a 50 oz gas tank. I try to fly it pretty slow and can fly 17-19 minutes. 20 minutes=deadstick. I still choose 40% over .40, just my bias. |

Maybe we should take him to the Happy Hangar.

I would go if I had a way to get there. I'm only 15 and I'm not sure if my dad would want to go. But thanks for the excellent show.

You guys are all right, it takes burning a lot of fuel and a lot of practice. It took me a while to get where i am now, last weekend i was at a comp and i dipped the tail of our AW 36% Edge 540 in the water. We good luck to you all.
