U-Can-Do 3d 46?
 

First flight for my UCD today, with wind at 18 plus. Take off and landing very smooth. The plane is setup with standard servos all around, Saito 72 with APC 14X4w prop. It seems with this prop the plane flies very slow is this the best selection of prop for the saito 72?

From what I understand, you should be good with that prop. These are funfly planes and not speed demons so the lower the pitch the better. How did it go vertical? Also, by standard servos, do you know how much torque they put out? I have one on order so I'd like to know if you're satisfied with your standard servos. Lastly, do you know how much it weighs?

i think the u can do 46 weighs about 5 lbs. it depends what engine yhat you put in it. If you have the bucks, get a YS .63, It is the perfect engine for that plane with out having to make it really lean to get power, we flew one right out of the box this morning with it set super rich, and i was hovering down to touch the rudder and having enough power to literally rocket straight up out of the torque roll! it was amazing.. too bad i cant fit a smoke pump and extra tank inside the fuselag.........

13x6 works fairly well on the saito .72 also... what rpm do you get with that 14x4w?

The Saito is brand new and I am still running it on the rich side, RPMs are at 9000. I have heard that I should get around 9500 with the 14X4w prop. If the weather holds up tomorrow I will start to lean the mixture and try to increase rpms. I will report on my flight tomorrow night..

i too just flew mine, saito 91, 14x6 prop, 9500 rmp, hovers at about 1/3 throttle. lands at about 5mph, fun plane to fly, just hope it hold up, as that engine vibrates the **** out of it. (yes prop is center and balanced)

I got mine yesterday, man the covering was sagging. Looks like it had been in a hot warehouse for a while. Got out the trusty covering iron and things look good as new. I'm feeling a little better about the weigth with mine as I go. I've weighed all the pieces similar to what RCAdmin did in that other post. Looks like I should come in at or just barely under 5lbs. Using Central Hobbies CF pushrods, mk horns, etc. 1450 6v nimh pack that I'll probably put under the fuel tank up front to get the weight off the tail. You guys will laugh, but I'm putting in my OS 46FX... Good thing is, I get about 13000 rpm's off of the 12.25x3.75 props on it. Been a really strong engine, plus it's helping me keep the weight of the plane down. I dunno if I'll rocket out of hovers, but I'm new enough to the whole 3d thing, I think I'll be fine for now. You can always switch engines later... ;)

The UCD is a very fun plane to fly!!! I leaned out the saito 72 rpms around 9150-9200, the engine has more than enough power. The only problem that I had was flight time 6 mins per tank, I ran out of gas in the middle of the flight and the plane just floated in for a nice landing. Anyone else have such short flight times???

My saito 72 vibrates the **** out of the plane too, I had to use locktight on the engine mounting screws.

I put my battery under the gas tank and have a cg of 4 3/4 and it is nose heavy. I am going to take the battery out from under the tank and move it back. Since you are using the 46fx you might need to put the battery under the tank to stay within the 4''-6'' cg range the GP recommends. My coving was saggy too.

I was talking to a guy at the field and he started using carbon fiber props. He runs multiple saitos and says he has less vibration and higher rpms. You might want to try one.

what prop? I've got a 13x6 on it and get almost 11,000... i run it at 10,600 leaned out some. runtimes are longer than i ever fly in a single session, i've gotten up to at least 20 to 25 minutes, haven't ran out of fuel yet...

I've been trial weighing things and I think you're right, I'll have the battery under the tank I think for the CG to work out right.

BTW, what servos are you guys running in yours? Also, have you guys thought of getting one of the VibraDamp mounts for your 4 strokes? Nothing as fancy as a hyde mount, just like the dubro or Gator RC has a nice one too I think.

something interesting to note, using my saito 91 i get about 10-12 min run times, cause im only using 1/6 throttle most the time.

whats this about mount that lessens vibration?

any links? this is my first year flying so im new to a lot of things.

Hey Painly,

Go to towerhobbies.com and search for Dubro Motor mounts. Gator R/C's soften-safe mounts are great, but they're only for the 120/140 class engines. I actally ran an engine on one of the dubro mounts on a test stand and the vibration was really low. Can't say I've flown a plane with one though. I'm not using the one on mine as I have my 2 stroker in it and don't need the extra weight.

BTW: Mine is finished, test ran the engine this morning! We're having some weather today or I'd be out flying!

Been reading some posts on the 46 size u-can-do, those of you that stuck a 91 4S in it, are you pleased with it, or did it create a lot of problems. I have one on order and I have a saito 91 on the bench. Was thinking of getting a saito 72 for it, but if the 91 is working out, heck I have that already. Anyhow would appreciate some feedback.

i just bought the u-can-do .46. it is a great plane but there are some problems with there hardware. i have done alot of reading and i mean alot on the u-can-do. and it seems that if you use standard servos such as the futaba 3003 or 3004 you can get ALOT of flutter if you have any slop. but you can stop that if you up grade the hardware. i did not use their push pull rods. i upgraded them to 4-40s. then i put carbon fiber over the 4-40 rods. then instead of normal clamps i put ball links. dont use their control arms they flex way to much and cause a ton of slop. use something else. when you use and install your CA hinges. make sure that there is no gap in between the surfaces and the wings or stab. make sure the CG is in the right.

you have the saito 91 o nit! wow, how does it fly/ i was thinkin abotu puttin a O.S. 91 on miine, but i didnt know how well it would fly it compared to a lighter engine, how well can it hover?

SAITO 72 RECOMMENDED FUEL ?!

I just bought a new saito 72 and I was wondering which fuel you are
recommending to use .
my available options are: a. wildcat 10% nitro, 18% synthetic oil
b. byron 15% nitro, 16% castrol & synthetic.

Is there something special I souled be aware of while breaking-in the engine?

Watch the tail sections on this plane- I recently saw the "maiden" of one of these and just after take-off one whole elevator and horiz. stab. broke almost back to the fuse- just flapping in the wind, the test pilot got it down ok-(great pilot-)

Truly amazing. This is one killer combo.

I would not use anything less than the Saito 100.

I placed a Saito 91 on mine today. I'm using a 15x4w prop. Yea, it shakes the **** out it at mid range! But the endless power is incredible! You point it straight up and throttle it and there is no end..... I'm still breaking the motor in too. The motor did dye on me though in the second flight right after take off. I was about 10 feet up. Hit the ground at a slight angle. The nylon bolts on my landing gear went first. Due to the motor being mounted inverted, the valves scrapped the ground and ended up pulling the firewall out. I'm fixen to reinstall a firewall and mount the motor upright. I really don't like the motor being inverted. Anyone else mount their motor up right?
