Can we see a pic of the wing in its present condition? It might help if there was a little more to go on. But as you have described it, I think considering the shape of the wing and the fit at the root, you might leave it as is. On the other hand, you might consider trying to lighten the plane to compensate for the smaller wing area. I dont know. Just a thought.
