Orenda, I'm one of three people in our club who fly diesels from time to time. The oily mess and the smell are the reasons diesels aren't more popular. But they are the only way to go when you need to swing a big prop, and they sound fabulous when you throttle down for a touch and go or a slow fly by. Then there's the mess and the smell....
