I don't understand why anyone would pay this much for an old kit when this
particular airplane is so easy to build from scratch, it couldn't be any easier.

When I was selling insurance, my time averaged out to be worth $200 per hour and that was over 15 years ago. There is no way that I could cut out an entire Kaos in an hour. Some folk's time is worth a lot more than the time needed to scratch build models. This is especially true if their interest in models is mostly in flying them, not building them.
