Not sure about the first part of your question but on the gyro you must always turn on your RAdio in AVCS mode. Once the gyro finds center then you can go ahead a switch it to normal.

If you boot your gyro in normal mode it will give you a blinking red this tells you to shut down and reboot in AVCS.When you boot your gyro up in AVCS mode you will get a steady red light until you give a rudder command then it will go off then back on when the servo returnes to center .
