what you described with the motor : acting weird, vibrating back and forth, does not know which way to spin does happen to mine all the time. But only when moving the throttle from off position slowly to next notch. I am guessing what it does or the best way I could describe it is , the ESC applies too small of a voltage to the motor, not enough for the motor to turn and the magnets inside the motor jerk the shaft back and forth. However if I move the throttle from off to about 1/4 position the motor spins up fine. Similar things do happen with other motors if there is not enough voltage upon starting. The motor usually just humms.
solution : check the end point for your throttle in minimum/off position, move the throttle trim toward more negative setting.
